Pelvo-rectal penetration? Sounds like a band name.

He works in mysterious, obscure, impossible-to-read-without-a-decoder-ring, slow-acting, may-cause-drowsiness ways.

// not to be petty, but one can be omniscient without lifting a finger to prevent atrocity

That is his punishment. A lifetime of effort to be known as a great football coach. His legacy is as the butt of jokes about kiddy diddling.

Should give Sandusky the chair on PPV at $49.95 a pop. Make JoPa pull the lever. All profits to the victims.

Funny thing about libel, slander, and lies -- the more you repeat them, the more that they start to sound like the truth. Denials only embolden the lie. Despite evidence to the contrary, despite the grand jury finding that he acted properly, despite the attorney general of Pennsylvania declaring that he fulfilled his obligations under the law, Joe Paterno is still being branded as a bigger villain that the guy who raped the children.

/ Yes, I realize that I was trolled.

feefifofimmy: Joe Paterno is still being branded as a bigger villain that the guy who raped the children.

no he's not. he's being branded as a man that build a career on doing things the right way and instead did nothing for at least a whole farking decade to protect innocent children that were being raped in his building after he was directly told what was happening. obligations under the law are almost always a minimum. there are higher obligations.

/and i don't see anyone in here defending sandusky or saying joepa was worse than that monster.
//ok, i do, but trolls will be trolls.

feefifofimmy: Despite evidence to the contrary, despite the grand jury finding that he acted properly, despite the attorney general of Pennsylvania declaring that he fulfilled his obligations under the law, Joe Paterno is still being branded as a bigger villain that the guy who raped the children.

There is a big difference between "fulfilling obligations" and doing what is right. Sandusky never lectured anyone about doing the "right" things. Sandusky never made his name about being more than about football, but about doing right by kids. Paterno did. When you look up to someone and they tell you that you should expect more from them and others than the minimum it becomes disappointing when they were just as shallow and CYA as everyone else. See also: Tressel.

2011-12-12 02:37:36 PM
I believe the operative words here are "innocent until proven guilty". Until Sandusky is convicted, Paterno cannot be judged.

After the 3,000 different Penn State threads we've had recently, I've honestly thought that talking point had been exhausted.

But, congrats on keeping that one alive.

No he isn't. People are just baffled how you can continue to work closely with someone who has done something like that.

He protected the football program instead of doing what was right, insisting the scumbag be fired.

that's not fair. covering up bullshiat violations of unfair arbitrary rules by the completely corrupt ncaa isn't in the same moral ballpark. hell, it's not even the same game. one could say that if one believed the players were being taken advantage of by the ncaa system, then hiding "improper" benefits isn't wrong. on the other hand, a 60-year-old man ass raping a 10-year-old in the shower is...

Hey, God had a lot on his platter the last ten years. The BoSox and the White Sox both won the World Series. Joe Pa's just unfortunate God didn't keep his mind on the Cubs.

Just straightening your facts: At the time of McQueary's report to Joe, Sandusky was no longer a coach. So Joe was no longer working with him. BUT, I kind of see your bigger point.

/ I wish Sandusky had taken the UVA job in 2000. Then he'd be their problem instead of ours.

I don't think they're in the same ballpark at all. Getting free tattoos is not even in the same universe as kid diddling...At the same time Tressel broke NCAA rules (knowingly) and Penn State did not. People have been calling for the death penalty for the Nittany Lions, but they broke no NCAA rules.

My comparison was only that when you hold yourself (publicly) to a higher standard and act like you are an example of ethics (going as far as chastising your players for breaking the rules while still covering up the fact that you also knowingly broke rules) you are more likely to be a target for whatever griping people might have. There are coaches that knowingly break rules and get caught (and move to be a head coach in the NFL for example), but they never acted like they were better than other people, running a "clean" program, which is one of the things Tressel constantly harped on. For FSM's sake he wrote books that specifically state that when you screw up, that is what you'll be remembered for, so it is important to follow the rules.

Paterno built much of his reputation about being about the kids (ironic, isn't it) and what is best for them. It's not all about winning and national championships, but about helping these individuals grow, etc. When you hang your hat on a high moral peg, when you falter you are (and should) be held to a higher standard.

did oj simpson kill his wife? a jury ruled. doesn't mean everyone agrees...

/there is enough from joepa's testimony to the the grand jury to condemn joepa's inaction
