Odd, we had a butter shortage here in Sweden not long ago. I think that big butter is clearly farking with us. We need to invade the Netherlands, to liberate their dairy farms.

Similar thing happened in Japan about 2-3 years ago... a combination of incompetent governance (two different government bureaus sold the country's surplus cattle to China w/o realizing the other had already sold them), drought in Australia (which meant they couldn't import cattle in a hurry), and laws requiring that a certain amount of Japan's dairy production be put into milk for schools caused butter prices to skyrocket.

It never got this bad, though.

Oh, puh-leaze Louise. It's not the black market. It's eBay.

I wonder how many of those guys are getting their asking price?

If it were me, I'd switch to margarine or virgin olive oil, maybe throw in a little garlic or some herbs and salt, especially if you're talking mussels. Or you could do a nice wine sauce instead of butter--at that price, why not Champagne or Madeira?

Have some Madeira, m'dear!

Masher!

My whole family is of Norwegian stock and I can tell you this not having butter to a Norwegian family would be a catastrophe. It literally goes with every meal. I can think of a family meal in over 35 years that didnt have butter heavily involved from the preparation to having bread and butter on the table at every meal. Heck one time I did southern BBQ for a family reunion and there had to be a plate of sliced bread and the butter dish on the table. Oh and some kind of pickled vegetable with every meal too... Norwegians have weird table practices.

"The shortfall has been blamed on a rainy summer that cut into feed production and therefore dairy output, but also the ballooning popularity of a low-carbohydrate, fat-rich diet that has sent demand for butter soaring."

I'm disappointed in you Subby.

This headline should read:

New fad high-fat diet kills Christmas in Norway... wait, what?

I saw this on an episode of Miami Vice. The butter is how they ship the cocaine into the country. They sell it for that high of a price to keep yahoo's from buying it and using it.

It melts down and separates easily, and the cocaine has GREAT flavor after wards. It's like snorting a movie.

It's all fun and games until someone goes on a rampage when they discover their $500 butter tub was cut with margarine.

/wonders what the street purity test for butter would be

You make a white wine sauce without butter? Please share. I love butter, gives sauces that silky sheen.

Is it an overall dairy shortage or just butter? Because is you have cream, butter is pretty easy to make.

"Food should be purchased from professional and safe vendors, not in a private environment," Wold told VG.

Soooo.....there's a professional and safe commercial creamery about 5 miles down the road from me, whose suppliers familes all came from your part of the world a hundred years ago or so. I think they know what they're doing. Would you have an issue if I crated up a few hundred pounds of it by say, Wednesday and had it sent over?

SWMBO (Swedish) bakes an assortment of traditional Christmas cookies, which are all made of varying ratios of butter, sugar, flour, and almond extract. Without butter in the house starting about Dec 1, there would be hell toupee.
