I'm sure law enforcement will use this with the same restraint they use the other "non-lethal" tools they've been given.

Temporarily blind people? Why do I expect this will work just as well as the other non-lethal weapons and permanently blind half the people hit with it?

Came in here to say, if only there were some sort of easily obtained protective eyewear... but I see you have it covered.

In other news, posession of laser safety glasses now illegal without a license.

They can say temporary all they want, but anything that blinds you by overloading your rods/cones/optic nerve is going to do real damage. Not that the cops care, I just hate when they pretend they don't want to hurt people.

Less than Lethal. Anything can be lethal if used properly. Pepper Spray and Tasers are no exception.

The "riots" we're used to are fairly tame and if faced with a real one all of these toys would be pretty worthless.

By "rioters," I assume they mean non-compliant but non-violent protesters?

They just care about the whiney press printing whiney complaints. So they just pretend they're not trying to hurt people.

Gee, how could this possibly go wrong?

I, for one, am not looking forward to reading a Fark article about a disabled war veteran getting permanently blinded for resisting arrest (with no other charges) with countless comments about how he deserved it and if he had just let them trample over his civil rights, he wouldn't be blind now.

Oh, yeah, and the cops involved will get paid suspension pending an "investigation."

Awesome.

2011-12-12 02:01:11 PM
Maybe we need to test more bullets on those in authority. Just to be safe.

It's not the first time a laser has been used to temporarily blind people.

Similar devices have already been used by British and American troops in Afghanistan to help protect convoys from attack.

If it's good enough for the terrorists, then it's good enough for you, citizen.

Didn't the taser company issue a notice to law enforcement agencies recommending LEOs not to aim for a person's trunk, but to shoot at a suspect's legs? People have died from legal taserings, and now the government will allow temporary blinding.

Probably the same as the over/under on legislation immunizing law enforcement from injury suits based on non-lethal weapons use.
