"Why can't gays compete in the military?" yelled 24-year-old Marine Corps veteran Jason Arment.

You get too smart and going into close combat loses its appeal.

The Marines had to dramatically reduce their standards in 2003 to keep recruitment from dropping near to zero, and the bar wasn't terribly high to begin with.

But even the dumbest grunt in the middle eastern rent-a-cop division of the US military can, at least, take comfort that they've still got at least one digit of IQ up on Rick Perry.

It's nice to see Perry stepping up the stupidity to fill the void that Herman Cain left when he dropped out.

I'm assuming the best here, in that he might have meant "compete for promotions/advancement." But he was probably just plugging in a different word for "fight" that doesn't work at all.

Also, Rick Perry is a goddamn asshat.

I'm not ashamed to admit that I'm an American, but you don't need to be in the city square every Sunday to know there's something wrong in this country when gay marriage is a bigger issue than the 14% of Americans who are illiterate. #RickPerry2012

Who is "our"?
What group, or association, or demographic are you associating yourself with in this statement?

Also, while I can understand the desire for a president superior to the current one, what is it about President Obama that makes you prefer the idea of this... this boob Rick Perry as president?

It is purely 'He's from the other team, so must be destroyed" or do you actually think Rick Perry would be a superior cheif executive? If the latter, please extrapolate your thoughts on the ways in which Perry would be preferable.

Honestly, it probably depends on rank. I've worked closely with the USMC, and while they may have some real dim bulbs among the lower ranks, you generally don't get past Lance Corporal if you can only count to potato.

"I want to say it was over $500 million that went to the country Solynda."

As much as I loathe Perry as the dipshiat moron he is, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, which is much more than the "teleprompter" crowd ever has; I'm sure he meant "company", and not "country". This in no way diminishes my opinion of him as a mouthbreathing, clueless retard who can only put his socks on by starting at the hip and working his way down until he finds the end of the attached limbs so he knows where to put them.

Actually, after the start of the Iraq war when the Marine Corps was growing the force from 180K to 202k, they did not drop many of their standards. While both the Army and the Marine corps increased the number of criminal conviction waivers granted, the Marine Corps actually maintained high education and baseline intelligence standards, especially with respect to the Army.

During the buildup, over 71% of new recruits shipping to boot camp scored above the 50th percentile on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, and well over 90% were high school graduates (not counting GED recruits). While bad conduct waivers are rampant (something over 40% last I knew) only 2% percent of them were for criminal behavior. The remaining 40something were for past drug involvement disclosure. I don't think most people can throw stones about a waiver for trying pot in high school.

The point I am making, is that while it is fashionable to rag on the military and claim that standards were dropped dramatically, the truth is that compared to their peers, Marine recruits are demonstrably better. Perhaps not when compared to college graduates, but they definitely are when compared to the entire population of 18-20 year olds. The Iraq and Afghanistan wars are not Vietnam, and there has not been nearly as dramatic a drop in personnel quality.

Not to mention I just have to jump in and defend my beloved Corps against insults like a comparison (even favorable) with rick perry.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around people publicly and unabashedly asking Rick Perry for his autograph. What kind of person does that? I wonder what the inside of their home looks like. I'm trying to imagine it but all I can see in my minds eye are guns and one of those Dale Ernhardt decorative plates.
