Gingrich - not nearly as clever as he thinks.

Then again, this is true for all politicians, so perhaps we should just get rid of all of them....

2011-12-11 12:20:25 PM
Then again, are those good points enough to get him elected?

DarwiOdrade: Apparently 3500 years of history (new window) is an invention.

Remember, Gingrich's doctorate was on modern Belgian educational policy in Africa. Don't expect him to have access to anything before the end of the Ottoman Empire.

Also, if you quote in him in context, you're promulgating falsehoods and he will sue you for defamation.

"This is the lowest point of thinking anyone can reach," said lead negotiator Saeb Erekat.

It's called courting the Republican base.

Gingrich doubled down on his 'invented people' comment during last night's debate. I wouldn't call it bravery, but he's sticking to his guns come what may.

Incidentally, Americans are an 'invented people'. we didn't exist until we all got kicked out of all the decent countries in europe and came to this continent and invented the United States.

Gringich leads because he gives the impression that he hates Obama the most. Much like Howard Dean was the "I hate Bush the most" candidate in 2004. Gringrich has no staff in Iowa, 60% of the base is Evangelical Christian, and it's a caucus not a primary.

Perry and Paul will be the winners in Iowa, and we'll be talking about them come January 4th.

And Ron Paul gave him some cover when he agreed that what Newt said was "Technically Correct" - in other words, Newt made a factual but not so diplomatic statement.

Incidentally, Americans are an 'invented people'. we didn't exist until we all got kicked out of all the decent countries in europe and came to this continent and invented the United States.

Correct, which is why during the Revolution we sent people over seas to France, and other countries *begging* them to recognize it as a Country. It took more than just the revolutionaries standing up and shouting "Hey, lookie here, we're Americans, not British Colonials!" for it to become recognized. Even then, after the war, it was very fragile what Washington did to preserve it inevitably lead to his leaving the presidency while many toasted in pubs to a speedy death for him while effigies of his likeness burned.

Point being, Newt was right.

yet somehow I don't think Newt (and by extention the GOP) really wants to be comparing Palestine to the Founding Fathers tho. that would make a lot of Republicans feel like history is touching them in a bad place.

This guy was corrupt in congress and documented as such and I don't even needto go into everything else he's done. How is this guy actually legally able to run?

Why can't we get someone decent who actually pretends to give a shiat? Do we even deserve one?

Well, there are some *major* differences, mainly the initial revolutionaries never went and killed innocent Royalist kids at random. There was some tar and feathering going on, which doesn't speak well for the movement, but the vast majority of those people lived to tell the tale, while people hit with a lobbed missile don't have that luxury.

"I think that we've had an invented Palestinian people who are in fact Arabs, and who were historically part of the Arab community," said Gingrich. "And they had a chance to go many places, and for a variety of political reasons we have sustained this war against Israel now since the 1940s, and it's tragic."

I don't care if you live here! You have other places to go! There's a world out there! Now get lost!

Andrew Jackson would have loved to have Newt. I'm also tired of the "No such things as Palestinians" argument. People were living in Israel's territory before it became an official country. It wasn't like there was a giant sign saying "DO NOT TRESSPASS. FUTURE ISRAEL TERRITORY." and it was just left deserted.

at this rate the entire world is against the entire field of republican candidates... except maybe Iran, Russia and N. Korea....

At some point somebody should prolly alert famed Republican historian Newt Gingrich that it is Israel who has been occupying Palestine for the last few decades and not the other way around.

America's continual use of it's veto as a permanent member of the UN security council to reflexively shield Israel from any international repercussion for any of it's many egregious actions to date is the largest single impediment to peace in the region and has been for quite a while.

The idea that the people with the least power to affect change in the region (ie. The Pals) are the most to blame for no change in the region is laughable or would be if it hadn't been the hardest sold meme in the MSM for generations now.

DarwiOdrade

The idea that Palestinians are actually descended from Philistines or Canaanites or what have you is not historically accurate. Judea was pretty firmly Judaized under the Hasmoneans: the only peoples in the area were Jews, Samaritans, Romans and Greeks.

Palestinians are the result of the latter groups becoming Arabized after the Muslim conquest. Not that 1400 years vs 3000 makes much difference.

Even if they hadn't been a people before 1947/8 (and they were), sixty-plus years under the israeli boot would have made a people of them.

I don't know whether that fool's statement was a sign of ignorance or a lie intended to justify apartheid and ethnic cleansing.

Israel is a racist shiathole and so is anybody who supports / defends them.

2011-12-11 06:10:16 PM
I wonder how he would react to saying that "Republicans" are an 'Invented' group of people? or that "idiot former house speakers" are also 'invented'?

Given that any grouping of people is 'invented'. The question is about whether or not they are *recognized* as being different than other populations, and whether or not they are seeking separation into a different sovereign state.

It's not like the Arabs are panethnic. It's not like there are varying nationalities within said people. Much like in America where we talk about the "whites." Or say "Latinos." There is a link between Arabs and language, but then again, that would be sort of like arguing that Australians, Brits, Canadians and Americans are all the same people, because we are separated by our shared language.

Trying to link the Arabs as all being alike, sort of dismisses the fact that despite a shared cultural link thanks to the Arabic diaspora, that all Arabs shed identity of nation, or heritage. Ask the Maghrebi how well they are considered Arabs compared to those nearer to the Mecca. It's not as if in this stew of ethnicities that have been united by a culture that has spread and rolled folks into the mix don't have their differences...

That's not really his style, that's a randommotherf*cker tactic. Bet he comes back and changes the subject and/or moves the goalpost.

Getting back to the amphibian, he's just trying to court the Jewish vote by showing how much he loves Israel (unlike Obama who wants to drive the Jews into the sea).
