What kick-starting a heart might look like these days for the Crüe

I had blissfully forgotten this song before today. Damn.

Motley Crue really were the poster child for everything that was wrong with metal in the 80s.

HakunaMatata: What kick-starting a heart might look like these days for the Crüe

that's kinda what it looked like back then too, considering what the song is about.

It's also the 71st birthday of David Gates, lead singer of Bread. Just thought I'd point that out since, apparently, SHMHC likes to celebrate the birthdays of musicians who did not play metal.

Listen to:

Zoroaster (new window)

In the Woods... (new window)

This. Though for the time and the scene (early 80's LA glam/scum metal), their first album was ok. All things considered, he's very lucky to have made it to his 50's.

Newish album I'm digging right now

Omitir - Cotard (new window)

Not sure if they've been mentioned here or not - pretty interesting black metal from Portugal.

I always figured this was the epitome of everything bad about the 80s.

My SHMHC contribution: Zozobra "Emanate."

You know what, I still occasionally listen to "Shout at the Devil" and "Dr. Feelgood." Yeah, they're cheesy as hell, but there are some catchy songs on there and they still hold up. I don't even feel guilty about it; these guys lived the life they sang about and lived to tell the tale.

I do have an actual metal recommendation, though - Dragged Into Sunlight. I have to give them my "most favorite band name of the last little while" award, and the music is suitably filthy and brutal. Love the scream at the beginning of this one - Buried With Leeches (new window)

Anyways, listen to Cloven Hoof, they're pretty awesome.

One thing I like about this time of the year is the "best of" lists that come along.

I recently found this list (new window) of the best metal albums of 2000-2009 and am working my way through some of the ones I didn't already know about. This is a pretty mainstream list, but it's got some classics on it. The rest of his "top 75" can be found a little ways down into the comments section, too, and it's got some very solid picks on it.

Pitchfork's "Show No Mercy" column has published their own list (new window) of the best metal albums of the year, and these are quite a bit more underground than the ones in the first link. Lots of shiat here I've never heard of, but I've found a few gems on this list already.

2011-12-11 04:05:54 PM
Another recommendation, for fans of crusty, Entombed-inspired punk/thrash/black metal: Trap Them - The Facts (new window)

I see it is Blut Aus Nord's turn to be "that black metal band that hipsters like". Good for them, hope they make some money off the ironic crowd.

0/10

Not really metal, obviously, but AFD is a rock masterpiece. If anything, it was one of the few things the 80s got right.

Hey, hipster money is green, too.

Too Fast For Love and Shout t the Devil weer Crue's best. After that, they became formulaic and instead of good rock and roll metal, they became another arena rock band. They had a couple of good songs, and I think Smokin' In the Boys Room was a great video, but all in all they lost the magic of their first two albums.

2011-12-11 07:25:03 PM
Definitely not metal, and kind of cheesy, but it's like Mozart compared to the other stuff going on at the time. Theirs are some of the few albums from that era that are still even remotely listenable.

Those are both horrible, to be sure. While I blame Motley Crue for all of it, one of the lowest point for me was seeing Judas Priest's video for Turbo Lover (new window)

So sad what a great band sank to....

/I saw Vinnie Vincent Invasion live once - they were opening for I don't remember who. I think they were on stage for maybe 15 minutes before Vinnie diva'd himself off the stage for the night, and in that time they played one full song, half of another, and about 12 pointlessly long guitar solos that just weren't that great.

Thanks for the links...even if they're gonna kill my wallet tonight. Although I wonder about any "Best of" list from this year that doesn't include either Unexpect's Fables of the Sleepless Empire or Cormorant's Dwellings.

Those are some disappointing lists. One guy has Lulu as #1 and there's a ton of djent (can this fad please die already?) everywhere. One guy did have The Project Hate MCMXCIX (new window) which I hadn't heard of before and was pleasantly surprised with, though.

That's the thing about lists - I love going through them, but almost never agree with every pick. I'm lucky if I like four or five from any particular list. But I usually find at least one good thing.

Part of the fun for me though is just seeing what other people are listening to.

/Project Hate is pretty good, now that I'm hearing it.
//if I look at 20 lists, and find one good thing per list... that's pretty much why I'm broke these days...

I've always found it interesting to see various 'metal fans' deny the 'metal' of bands they don't like. They fall under the genre of Metal, deal with it.

Frailty - The Fall of Eve

Frailty - Silent Winter

Texas Hippie Coalition - Back from Hell
