Does it strike anyone else that these movies have been so dark yet so commercially successful? I remember Werner Herzog talking about that in an interview once. Either way, I consider Dark Knight to be Joker's movie. He has his way with everyone for the entire thing. I wouldn't be surprised if Nolan takes out Batman in the third. But, honestly, I'm shocked at how bleak these things are and EVERYONE loves them.

Change is good...embrace it. Seriously though, I never liked batman until this trilogy started. I like dark, bleak, un-endearing things.

I always took Bane to be a metaphor for the masculine extremes that the comic book world was taking. Superman was bested by a force of nature that was half monster and half Image Comics archetype. So Batman was defeated not by his own sad quest to take on all the evil of Gotham (by himself, no doubt, because ONLY he could), but then he was confronted in his own mansion by the living embodiment of the '90s Comic Stereotype: musclebound, masked, and juiced on his own self-importance and alienation. Ironically enough, the same 'Venom' that Batman himself used during his own dark days of the '80s.

Honestly, I'll be interested to see how this turns out. I didn't think Nolan would go to Knightfall for a story, but he's surprised me before. I have faith in him to do a good job. I don't expect something as fantastic as Dark Knight, but I do expect to be entertained. And that's enough.

He's not a luchador, y'know?

And where's the subtlety in "Two-Face", "The Joker" and "Catwoman"?

I don't know about everybody. (new window) You can always depend on Armond White to completely and intentionally misunderstand your favorite films and launch into jumbled, pseudo-intellectual, and (frankly offensive) moral king-of-the-mountain tirades.

IMO, the world of cinema is right now dominated by two absolute titans - Christopher Nolan and PT Anderson. They are so absolutely brilliant at their craft, the distance between them and any other working director is huge.

Did you not see the scene in BB where Alfred hits the carbon-composite mask with a hammer and shatters it? The next batch was supposed to be stronger, but not Bane-proof...

With Bane and Catwoman in the movie I hope it doesn't turn into the multi-character shiatfest that Spiderman 3 was.

And Spiderman 3 would have been so good if the only villian was Venom and someone more beefier than Topher Grace played Brock.

Awesome poster. The tagline "THE LEGEND ENDS" really sets the tone for the whole thing.

Beluga Heights: Does it strike anyone else that these movies have been so dark yet so commercially successful?

Oh yeah.

Still, it gives me hope that audiences don't need to be spoonfed movies with artificial amounts of upbeatness to them (I'm looking at you, ending of Spielberg's War of the Worlds).

I think a more egregious example is the last Harry Potter movie.

Maybe at 1:45:00 Batman stands up and kills Bane. He gets diagnosed with AIDS at 1:52:00 in the movie. The next 45 minutes is just Bruce coming to terms with his impending death. He dies of pneumonia related death at 2:40:00. It all ends with Danny Pudi as Abed taking over as Batman in an unexpected crossover between Nolanverse Batman and Community.

You know Batman Begins Had Scarecrow and Rahs A Ghoul right? And Dark Night had Joker and Two Face AND a cameo by Scarecrow?

Not really. I've always thought it odd that people biatch about "depressing music" (read: songs with slightly more depressing subject matter than loving Rock'n'Roll and farking biatches), yet the biggest selling albums are Rumours, The Wall, Dark Side of the Moon, etc.

MI:4 actually looks pretty decent in my opinion. TDKR prologue is just a bonus.

I'll be seeing it on opening night, I'd just rather see it at my local theater than the IMAX.

Did Wener understand why this has happened? Of all people, it should be obvious to him: art reflects the age in which it is made, and we live in a dark age, in which many have little hope for redemption for our species. So we tell stories about that, while we crouch around our fires at night, just as we always have.

If Nolan's directing and Bale is starring, I'd watch that film. The only downside is that Bale dropping down to 120 lbs for a third time would probably kill him.

Historically dark times have led to cheery movies.

Also this 5'10" 185lb dude is capable of being pants-sh*ttingly frightening. Just like a thin 6'1" child-like Australian fresh off playing a gay shepherd was able to be the scariest Joker ever.

Apos: It would be great for it to end in:

I would have made that the focus of the prologue. With the movie taking place 8 years in the future, it would have been perfect. Bane and Batman have their first confrontation in which Bane breaks Batman's back. Bane then spends the next 8 years taking over Gotham while Batman is in hiding, recovering.
