I worked with a 50 something guy that played for the Redskins for several years. He ate at IHOP every single day....so yeah there was brain trauma.

Yep.

Link

Playing like that from Pop Warner through high school, college and pros can wear you out.

Peyton should stick around, mentor whoever the Colts draft, and take the money and run. While he can still go to the bathroom by himself.

Cruelest thing ever said about Kenny Anderson. Right there.

Interesting to read what 25 years have done to the guys I rooted for the year I graduated high school. Some really sad stuff, but I love reading how Tim Krumrie is just as tough a motherfarker at 51 as he was when he was in his 20s.

I recall that as nose tackle, he wore a helmet one size too large so that he could shove it up in order to see better before the play started. As soon as the ball was snapped, the helmet got slammed down, smashing the bridge of his nose, and tearing the skin. I'll bet he still has that nasty scar across the top of his nose.

When I was growing up the guy across the street from us was a former player for the Green Bay Packers. His arthritis was so bad at 40 that he had to use a cane to go anywhere, and he said he'd never allow his son to play football because of all the damage it did to him.

Mike_LowELL: Remember kids: MMA and boxing are the violent sports. Football, you just need to tough it out.

Any sport will give you aches and pains, even baseball. Basketball is worse on the knees than football in general, it's just that football generates a few more freak injuries to the knees. As far as physicality, form goes a long way towards protecting yourself and protecting your foe.

FTA: "But no matter their current hardships, the vast majority say they have no regrets"

...and they are goddamn fools. I have some serious regrets with playing football....I had the same surgery as Peyton Manning at 38 years of age.

29 here. I only played pee-wee through 2 years on the practice squad of a D1 college program. It's hard for me to explain why I groan and crack so much. My tally: shoulder, wrist, elbow, knee and foot surgeries.

Of course, I'm sure Brandon Roy wishes he played football right about now.

28 myself.. Played same duration with three sports(baseball/football/wrestling). All of my significant injuries or ones that still affect today are from wrestling(severely strained lower back, recurs so goddamned easily), baseball(torn meniscus, moderately strained MCL, broken wrist), rec league basketball(shoulder/rotator cuff injury), and smear the queer(torn quad), and I played fullback, NT/DT, and center.

Football was the most physical, but the sport that did the least amount of damage to me oddly enough. That said, I was also heavily padded(kind of have to as an FB/Lineman if you want to stay ambulatory): cowboy collar/neck roll, extended mask, air helmet, lineman gloves, knee braces, foot/ankle wraps, neoprene elbow sleeves, ribcage vest, tall hip pads, hard cup(most of my teammates switched to soft cups as they got older for some ungodly reason), etc.

From the article: "Head trauma Seventeen players (44%) said they have memory loss, ranging from forgetting what they had for dinner the previous night to forgetting a conversation they just had. Thirteen (33%) reported daily headaches and believe they stem from football."

The New York Times recently did a three part story describing the impact repeated head trauma had on Derek Boogaard and other NHL "enforcers". Depressing as all get out.

puffy999: Of course, I'm sure Brandon Roy wishes he played football right about now.

Brandon Roy's knees are shot, but he still has his spine, brain, shoulders, hips and eyesight. Basketball is awful on the knees, ankles and feet, but you still leave with cognitive ability. With NBA players results may vary.

I was only including injuries that happened on the field. I believe it was also a tally of 12 years of soccer, 6 cross country, and 3 of wrestling. Surmise it to say I will not let any future children of mine play back to back to back sports before they are 16.

I think all contact sports should be banned because of the undue costs / burden it places on our health care system. It's not fair for everyone to share in the costs of the long term injuries that could easily have been prevented by not participating in such activities.

You must have a small penis, suffer from repressed homosexuality, be some sort of sociopath as you seem to find gratification in inflicting pain on others, or are entertained watching others permanently maimed for life by participating in these neanderthal like exhibitions. Do you also like showering with other dudes? The costs that society has to bear for the long term care of people stupid enough to willingly engage in harmful, and sometimes permanently crippling or fatal, activities is heinous! Congress should tax the shiat of this to discourage people from participating in such barbaric spectacles masquerading as "contact sports", if not ban them out right!

I bet you drive a muscle car too!

"I'd do it again in a minute," says Ray Horton, a cornerback on the Bengals and now the Cardinals' defensive coordinator. Horton, 51, retired after the 1992 season, his 10th, with one significant knee injury, a torn left ACL (he chose not to have surgery) and feels no daily football-related pain. "[The NFL] affords a great lifestyle. Are there inherent risks? Yeah, but those coal miners in West Virginia and down in Chile, they have an inherent risk in their jobs. The soldiers who go over to Afghanistan, they have an inherent risk in what they do. Firefighters have an inherent risk. Are you kidding me? To play a sport I love the whole time and to just lose a knee-guys come back from Afghanistan with no legs."

At least somebody put it in the proper perspective.

I know it's a minor nit to pick, but it's pretty sad that Peter King doesn't even get the first sentence correct. You don't treat sleep apnea with oxygen, you treat it with air pressure. It's just air, not oxygen.

I assume you aren't a medical professional, but it depends. Obstructive sleep apnea is treated with a constant positive air pressure device (CPAP). However not all sleep apnea is obstructive. In fact the type associated with brain damage/neurological disorders is central sleep apnea (things like heart failure also can cause central apnea). For central apnea, oxygen is an indicated treatment.

EyeballKid: Makes me think maybe the linemen should be the ones getting the multi-million dollar contracts.

They do. (new window)

Quarterbacks typically get paid the most, but the next-highest salaries by position all go to linemen (offensive and defensive). Elite defensive linemen and offensive tackles often break the top 10 salaries in the league...and they're usually worth every penny.

Wow. Remembering some of these guys after 25 years... lot of good players on that team. They had amazing depth at WR.

A really somber article, and yet the one thing I want to ask is if Mike Martin remembers winning the NFL Talent Challenge by singing a Bobby Brown song, beating Reggie White's Clint Eastwood imitation.

For all you Collinsworth haters out there; a few years ago my son played aginst his son in a knothole game. CCwaited until the game started, walked over with his chair and sat down and watched the game. He didn't yell or make a scene throughout, just sat there minding his own business talking to the people around him. After the game he went to our coach and asked for permission to say a few words to our kids. He talked to them for maybe twenty minutes, the whole time being very positive, polite and pleasant. Seemed like a decent guy.

Just wait until a sobering look at the post-NFL lives of the 2006 Bengals...from prison.

Shadow Blasko: says Ken Anderson, 62, who was Esiason's backup in '86, his 16th and final NFL season.

Cruelest thing ever said about Kenny Anderson. Right there.

As a sportscaster, Esiason is an annoying dick. As a QB, there were many worse. Some better, too, of course. He was better than maybe 2/3 of the other starters at the time. Anderson had probably been washed up for about 4 years in '86. It's similar to castigating Mark Brunell, who wasn't half-bad in his prime, because he can't get off the bench at the twilight of his career, and he's playing behind a guy who makes Esiason look like Aaron Rodgers.
