(Jezebel) Scary Some of these quotes are from various men's magazines. Some are from convicted rapists justifying their crime. Can you tell the difference?   (jezebel.com) divider line 310

All of them have appeared as comments in FARK threads.

I can't tell the difference between a Gawker network site after the latest redesign and a blank page. If you want to be literal, a blank page except for the site name at the top.

Apparently, yes, almost every time.

In other news, Jezebel apparently thinks all men are rapists and this is why feminism is having such a blowback these days. When this is normal rhetoric, all actual progress becomes impossible. Good job feminists, you're now keeping yourselves back.

Hey, look, a FARK misandry thread that the womyn will be calling a misogyny thread!

Feminism.

Well, this ought to be a calm and rational thread...

Depending on how it is presented it is perfectly acceptable rhetoric. "All men are rapists" is bad and acts against whatever their goals are. However, pointing out that our society is currently in a place where it is "normal" for men's magazines to tell regular men that thinking like a rapist is the "normal" and desired way of thinking (in the same way it's a bad place for women's magazines to tell women that anorexic balloon-boob plastic air-brushed women is a "normal" and desired body type).

It's encouraging something that should not be encouraged. In that context I think an article like this could be used to spur positive change. However, if it came across as "all men are rapist" (which, imo, it did not) then of course it would be acting against their own interests.

Let me present you with the problem here.

Girls love being tied up

This is true for some women.

Escorts . . . they know exactly how to turn a man on.

This is true because it's their goddamn job.

Filthy talk can be such a turn on for a girl

This is absolutely true for some women.

When we have reached the point when talking about things that are actually true, and then denouncing them as rape, we have gone completely off the rails. Feminists will talk about empowering women and embracing what you like, and then will turn around and denounce men for playing back. You can't have it both ways.

We have turned reality into a sexual crime, and it is feminism going too far. Men and women should be equal, but that isn't what these people are trying to do. They're trying to flip the roles, to have women dominate men to pay back for the millenniums of gender roles and that doesn't fix anything.

The problem is, the gentleman has to think this stuff up on the spot, the rapist usually has time to think about it afterward. I tell you, it just isn't a fair world.

Who cares if there are similarities? The only difference is that some are from people who committed crimes, the other are not. Rapists like to feel dominating and controlling. Some couples like S&M. Are the two exactly the same now? Of course not. The only difference that matters is that which makes one a serious crime, while one is respected activity between adults. Some women do dress and act differently when they're looking to hookup. So do guys. Take a 22 year old girl and a 22 year old guy, and I can bet they both don't dress the same for class Monday morning as they did when they went clubbing Saturday night. So what. Every one of those statements in the article has a degree of truth to them, depending on who you're talking about. That doesn't make the thoughts akin to rape. Rape is akin to rape.

/Sorry, was I supposed to be outraged over some manufactured slight to some protected group?

I really dislike the current design... I have to refresh just to get Lifehacker to load about half of the time. Gawker sites are jQuery rum amok.

Less is more with that stuff... start with a usable design, then throw in your js bits to enhance it.

The problem that so many farkers seem to be missing is that these statements are not speaking about *some* women, these are generalizations about *all* women that reflect a crap attitude.

"Can You Tell The Difference Between A Men's Magazine And A Rapist?"
Yes, a men's magazine is an inanimate object. A rapist is a person convicted of a crime.

//that was easy enough.

anyone reading a 'lad mag' probably is a rapist

Men like to have sex with women.

Rapists also like to have sex with women.

Therefore, men are all rapists (or wanna-be rapists).

I don't care what you guys say, I'd be embarrassed to utter any of those comments to a woman. The expression of those thoughts aloud should make a guy lose his humanity card.

Every one of those comments could easily have been uttered by a self-serving rapist. If there is a woman that enjoys filthy talk, and I'm sure there are, she probably wouldn't welcome it from a stranger.

okay, lets see:

Rapists talking about sex sound similar to porn mag interviews, when you break it down to single sentences. Shocking.

In porn mags men are fed their desires, and encouraged to indulge in common fantasies. It's not surprising that some (or a lot) of the language is similar.

Now granted, if you buy a porn mag that has an interview containing the words "then I took her tied up, lifeless body into the hotel room to have sex with" then yeah, you're a sicko. But on a quick scan of those quotes, the pattern there is of typical classical macho attitudes toward sex. Normal men have macho attitudes, and rapists have macho attitudes. Therefore obviously normal men are just as sick as rapists. Right? Right? Am I right?

I'll just write this off as another case of women not understanding men. Maybe when men understand women I will come back to this article and cast aspersions. Until then, .... "meh"

Missed - #2 "Some girls walk around in short-shorts . . . showing their body off . . . It just starts a man thinking that if he gets something like that, what can he do with it?"
and
#9 "You'll find most girls will be reluctant about going to bed with somebody or crawling in the back seat of a car . . . But you can usually seduce them, and they'll do it willingly."
Both I figured were in mens magazines.

The problem is over-analyzing. Women should not listen to the conversations men have when they aren't around. The opposite is true too. We are all merely animals trying to act like a society.

13/16. The lad mag quotes were about fulfilling what they believe are women's fantasies.

2011-12-10 09:53:07 PM
I think the main problem with this article is that it presupposes that anyone actually reads "lad mags," which I think is a pretty big leap. Also, the term "lad mag" is stupid as hell and I hate it. Not the magazines themselves, which I can't be bothered to give a damn about, but it's the sort of name that makes me think about Nancy Grace, and that's just uncalled for.

Men's magazines are retarded. Jezebel is super retarded. That is all.

2011-12-10 09:54:18 PM
Ok, female perspective:

This article did not leave me fearing all men are potential rapists. I read it as 'Language associated with rape that can easily be mistaken for the words of a rapist is worryingly commonplace in magazines targeting young gentlemen'

I got 12/16 correct. The trick is, the rapists are trying to justify their actions, the mag commenters are just being disgusting. I find it hard to imagine a rapist would use that sort of terminology in the dock or for a book if they're playing innocent for parole. The four I didn't get were two lads mag ones which were probably taken out of context ('You don't wanna get caught red handed' is probably about getting girls who have boyfriends and therefore is a little misleading anyway) and two rapist ones which were, shall we say, less than remorseful. Psychotic, if you will.

2011-12-10 09:55:53 PM
...Actually yeah, I could easily tell the difference. The men's magazine quotes are treating women as sexual beings, sure, but they aren't trying to justify rape in the same way a quote like "Girls ask for it by wearing these mini-skirts and hotpants" is.

But that's beside the point. Even if I couldn't tell which was which, conflating the two using single-sentence quotes is absurd as the "some of these quotes are from Obama, some are from Hitler, can YOU tell the difference!?" chain email - well DUH; you've sifted through a huge amount of material from both sources and chosen the most similar sounding quotes you could find, of course it's farking hard to tell which is which. You could do the same thing with the Bible and a book of erotic poetry if you wanted.

"Look to your left...look to your right. One of these men will try to rape you."

2011-12-10 09:57:12 PM
So they are trying to draw a line between rapist's attitudes about sex and other people's attitudes about sex. When will morons figure out that rape has nothing to do with sex but everything to do with power and control. Start comparing their attitudes about power and control over their own lives, then we may be getting some place but this is meaningless fluff.

2011-12-10 09:57:28 PM
Can we all agree that advice/fashion magazines written for both genders are stupid, misleading, and damaging to their readership if taken seriously? Women's magazines aren't exactly helping either.

2011-12-10 09:58:06 PM
12/16

I erred on the side of caution, giving rapists credit for a few of the magazine comments.

Not porn mags. Lad mags. Magazines targeted to lads aged 14 - 40ish, with reviews of gadgetry, cars, sports, and other manly things, with a few boobies sprinkled throughout for good measure. They're not exactly 'Dear Penthouse Forum' and the comments are usually either 250 word responses to articles or lads stopped on the street and asked for opinions. These aren't just lines cut out of a sex story or captioning porn. It's not even classed as porn, you can wave it around in the office without comment.

2011-12-10 09:59:15 PM
-.- Okay even the mormon is going to come in here and say that was a stupid link The answers from the rapists were "women are asking for it" and the quotes from "lad mags" were all "Here are some kinky things you can do with permission.". How terrible, obviously this is going to turn men into degenerate rapists..who ask first.

250 word? I mean 250 letter. Bigger than an sms, smaller than a story.
