Why would you pay almost 200 bucks to run?

Why would you use garbage bags? Don't those things have chemicals in them?

Winning: Why would you use garbage bags? Don't those things have chemicals in them?

Yep. Garbage bags are considered non-food grade plastic & contain dyes & levels of recycled plastics that can be harmful to humans. Food grade plastic is manufactured at higher standards as to purity, types/amounts of recycled plastics, etc.

THIS is why I don't run marathons. That and because I'd get all sweaty and yucky.

I think I know what happened. Although water in Las Vegas sucks, it's drinkable. It was the trash cans they used.

Okay, I've been working in casino PAD departments here for almost twenty years. I'll bet you that each and everyone of those trash cans came from a casino PAD department. Previously to this event, those trash cans were used to haul away all kinds of casino floor garbage: Dirt, cigarette butts, beer bottles, broken glass, fast food containers, used Kleenex, vomit.

In every casino I've worked at, they think a trash can is safe to use if you use a garbage bag or two to line it. At the last casino I worked at, they used a roll-out used to transport biohazard waste to ice cans of soda pop in.

Trash cans are very rarely cleaned out. And when they are, it's just a seconds-long blast of cold water. These trash cans are never cleaned with hot water or any cleaning agents. And the casino porters that use them just don't give a damn about bloodborne pathogens because in their minds, it's just more work for them.

Fools! That's like drinking right out of the hose - you're gonna die!

Not really but I always find interesting what every one "knows" is dangerous vs. what people will assume is perfectly safe.

Do they have a marathon where they marathon for people who have died in marathons. Marathon. Megatron.

Nunpoo: Why is it snowing on that website?

Good question. I wondered the same myself.

Ah - I was hoping for a marathon thread so I could consult with fellow Farkers. I successfully ran a half-marathon last March (by successfully I mean that although I was running slowly, I didn't stop and I didn't walk.) I'm considering doing a full one this year.

When you all ran your first marathon, how long did it take you to train for it? What was your training regimen? Did you complete it successfully?

Hey, I ran the half in Vegas last Sunday. Felt like crap afterwards as well, but figured it was tied to the fact that I was hungover as all hell when I started the damn thing.

Google Hal Higdon training routines...go with the Intermediate I, I believe, or ehatever suits you.

I usually recommend that you be able to run 30-40 minutes comfortably before you start training. After that, if you plan to train every day, training should take 4 months. If you train 6 days/week, 5 months. If you train 5 days/week, 6 months. If you train less than that, just stop - you are not training.

I also tend to think that a lot of runners jump to the marathon without enough experience. But that is really more a matter of what type of goal you have. I.e., I don't care about finishing, I care about finishing with the best time I can do. I would rather run a great 20 miles and have to withdraw than finish with a 4:30.

That's nuts. I would never take part in a run that used garbage cans to serve water to the runners. Bottled water only.

Surely there's some kind food-handling regulations that this event violated? Even my Grandmother's Church got busted for serving a weekly luncheon to the neighbourhood because they didn't have the proper credentials to prepare food for human consumption.

/I didn't mind - just more of Grandma's baking for me.
