You mean a small percentage of adults with constant access to children might be predators? Next thing you'll be telling me is that some teachers engage in relationships with their students.

Yeah but they go to jail.

Yeah I think the Catholic Church has a couple thousand years of child abuse, so I'm not worried.

Organised sport and organised religion have the same weakness. Central "authority".

I had a gym teacher in middle school who was always touching the girls in class (smacking their asses and sh*t). When I called him out on it he got REALLY f*cking mad. He was my homeroom teacher too. Made my life a living hell after that. He actually pinned me to a wall once and told me how much he wished he could just beat the snot out of me.

He was a dick.

Subby, have you ever seen a grown man naked?

Why are people shocked abut this? It isn't anything new and has been going on forever. And it will never stop. It's one thing for a conscientious dad to volunteer to coach Little League or for a guy to become a Big Brother. But if a guy is making a career out of maximizing his opportunities to be around pubescent and teenaged boys, he's diddling them.

The sad part is that America has become so shrill about this, male volunteers must now go through background checks and psychological evaluation before working with kids. And then they're watched like a hawk. Many guys don't volunteer anymore. I stopped years ago because I came to view it as too risky. And not all guys accused of diddling kids actually did so. Why chance ruining your life? In the end, the kids suffer.

I'm shocked. Mashed, but shocked. They both suck.

At least the fact that this crap is coming out in the open will make it more likely that girls and boys will feel empowered and supported if they need to reveal abuse they have encountered.

Good lord. How long ago was this?

That's so scary to me. I remember what it was like being a young kid and having "all adults are figures of authority" drilled into my head all the time, and having no idea what to do when you see these so-called authority figures being slime.

some.old.lady.: At least the fact that this crap is coming out in the open will make it more likely that girls and boys will feel empowered and supported if they need to reveal abuse they have encountered.

But it is not coming out into the open. In fact, all the publicity over this will have the effect of making teens go even more silent when it happens. They don't want to risk being in the limelight about something that already makes them ashamed. Child sex abuse cases should be handled very quietly and only by pros specially trained to handle them. They should never be reported in the media. This happens in some locales, but not all.

It was a small farming town. I was an outsider and none of the staff liked me because I was a bit of a rabblerouser. No one would have cared or even believed me (actually I think I did tell my parents but they just reacted with "Oh cripes. What did you do now?" or something like that. Glad I got out of that school rather quickly.

On the plus side it made a bunch of the girls like me.

Hmm... it would have been a little over twenty years ago I guess. And yeah... authority douches always bugged me. They had to take me out of catholic school when I was 6 or 7 because I kept questioning all the hocus pocus sh*t that didn't make sense.

I guess Jesusy people don't like being stumped by young children.

This is not new.
~30 yrs ago, my mom sent me a newspaper clipping...my old skating instructor got busted and convicted for diddling kids. He was my coach mid-late 60's.

Diddlers or assholes...kids coaches are often one or the other.

I think one of the most farked things about our culture is the way that we deal with sexual abuse cases. The national mentality always feels as if it treats child abuse as a case of "YOU HURT MY PROPERTY!" as opposed to "You took advantage of someone who is completely incapable of fighting back, and possibly caused deep psychological damage that they will have to carry for years on end."

There wasn't a sudden shift in the wind that caused youth sports workers to replace Catholic churches as houses of abuse, just a shift in attention. Child molesters go after kids they have access to, and so will seek out (or take advantage of) situation where they have access to kids. I think that the statistic is that about 1 out of 4 people have had experienced some sort of major sexual abuse issue in the past (whatever as a child or adult) - it's an epidemic, and the way we're dealing with it is either by closing our ears and yelling "YAYAYAYYAYA" or strapping on our ACME rocket rollerskates and careening down the cliff in the opposite direction of anything that will cause a sustainable change.

2011-12-10 05:44:51 PM
maybe all these macho jocks that are idolized by the media and our culture are just as susceptible to mental illness and moral corruption as the general population. so maybe you shouldn't trust your kids with some guy, just because he has broad shoulders and a nice smile.

I've stayed in many many hotel rooms, from little flea bag mom and pops to major chains and every single room has had a chain or something on the door to stop the unwelcome entering your room. I'm thinking there are lots of assholes that are going to get back at coaches for some perceive mistreatment years ago by screaming man-boy love. Not that anyone over the age or I.Q. of fourteen ever gave much credence to the "all Catholics are pedophiles" morons, but this does rather serve to underscore the fact that no matter what Atheists seem to believe, there's nothing magic about religion that makes a person either more or less prone to deviant behavior.

Something tells me that there's a third reason you're not telling us about. A reason linked to the fact that you think it's sad that rape victims are "given the benefit of the doubt", and that you put the word victim in quotation marks.

Also, "asshat" went out with "Pwning Noobs" right around the turn of the millennium.

Jonathan Hohensee: I think one of the most farked things about our culture is the way that we deal with sexual abuse cases.

We deal with this problem the way we do no so much because we are so dead set on protecting our kids (parents do, society really doesn't), but because so many adults mentally masturbate to child sex abuse.

Child psychologists, who handle these cases know that the best thing that can happen is for the parents to remain very calm and reassuring, but not make too big a deal out of it. The child needs to learn that they did nothing wrong and that their abuser is very sick. Parents, police and well-meaning councilors can often do far more damage than the abuser. The child should know nothing more about the disposition of the abuser than he has been caught and is getting help. His punishment should not be disclosed to younger children, since this can make them feel very guilty and can lead to sexual dysfunction later.

Americans descry it, but we really like knee-jerk reactions. States have been raising the age of consent so that they can put 20 year olds in jail for having sex with a 17 year old. In some states, the age of consent is now 18. This means that 17 year olds having sex in the back seat of a car are committing a felony offense. Nothing willhappen to the girl, but the boy can go to prison and have to register as a sex offender for life. How does this help protect our children?

In today's climate being a teacher or having ANYTHING to do with children professionally is dangerous business. Even the most outlandish false allegation can completely destroy your life.

If someone wants me to teach their kid or whatever the parent is gonna sit right there with us and I'd probably set up a big old clunky camera in plain view just in case. These pedo assf*cks have ruined the student teacher dynamic.

But I find kids to be annoying anyway and avoid them in general so it doesn't really affect me. I just feel bad for the legitimate childcare pros.

It isn't well stated, but Rodeodoc has a valid point. Many men have been accused years later of something they didn't do. Perhaps you haven't heard of the psychobabble of recovering repressed memories. Many a father has been accused of diddling their daughters because some charlatan with an agenda helped some young woman recover a memory of her daddy rubbing her bottom when she was three. Accusations of abuse cannot be taken lightly and the burden of proof needs to be stringent.
