If I was Obama I'd spend all my campaign contributions on hookers and blow, maybe show up for a debate or two and the swearing in ceremony.

/do they have another swearing in ceremony when you're re-elected?

No Huntsman. Romney being forced to the far right by the polls. Iowa is 60% Evangelical and 94% White. Less than a month still the caucuses. This should be the perfect storm of crazy and desperation. I predict Farkers, therefore late night comedians, to be feasting off this debate for weeks to come.

I have a debate question!

Here's the Federal oath of office. Every Federal employee, other than the President, who has his own oath, must swear this oath:

I, [name], do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter. So help me God.

Why are Federal employees required to engage in prayer as a condition of employment?

Weeks? There's at least 2 more this month (not including Trump's or the Gingrich/huntsman face off). For all of us Farkers, it truly is the most wonderful time of the year

Does this debate have a particular policy focus, like the other ones that were focused on the economy or foreign policy? I keep waiting for the "social issues" one so that we can see which of these twiddleheads can out pro-life and anti-gay the others.

WTF Indeed: Iowa is 60% Evangelical and 94% White

Its a pretty white state for sure, but there is a heavy Catholic and Lutheran presence there. And there is a strong ELCA for Lutherans, although they do also have the Missouri synod. I think 60% evangelical would be overstating it. The state is more Republican to the West and Omaha, but becomes solidly more Democratic to the East towards Chicago.

The Presidential election is a math problem. Let's make some reasonable assumptions

Obama loses Florida this time around (large Jewish population, Obama is not their friend)
Obama loses Ohio this time around (Very possible, his poll numbers with just about everyone are in the toilet there)
Obama loses Pennsylvania (Less likely, but still very much in the realm of possibility.

Now assuming all other things are equal to 2008, Obama still wins 297 to 241

Now lets assume that the GOP turns back other swing states where they normall win. Let's include the two most likely Indiana and North Carolina. Now we're still at Obama winning 271 to 269. This means that the GOP would only need to turn around one more state amongst New Hampshire (unlikely), New Mexico (likely), Colorado (unlikely) or Nevada (unlilkely), in order to win the election.

Now let's also assume that voter apathy hurts Obama more than it does whoever the GOP candidate is (it will, those kids aren't going to vote in nearly as strong numbers as they did in '08, neither will the other groups who don't normally vote)

Of course, I'm just reading the tea leaves based on generic polling numbers. Everything can change based on who the GOP nominates. If the economy goes south in the next six months, it's bad for Obama. If unemployment goes down it's good for Obama.

Putting all partisan politics aside however, if you are objectively basing Obama's reelection chances on quantifiable metrics as they stand, there's just absolutely no way any rational person can argue that it's going to be a slam dunk for him, that's just a liberal pipedream. A more realistic perspective for Dems is that if Obama wins, it's going to be a close one. Maybe not Bush vs Gore close, but more like Bush vs Kerry close.

That actually should have read Nevada (likely) not (unlikely)

spman: That actually should have read Nevada (likely) not (unlikely)

Hmm. With Nevada's huge foreclosure/underwater mortgage problem, and Obama at least paying lip service to helping homeowners while every Republican is taking the "fark the poor" line, I think Nevada might be a surprise win for the Prez.

Britney Spear's Speculum: Why are there so many farking debates?

I don't actually mind the number of debates, so much as the format. They should do round-robin debates between pairs of candidates. That would allow a much easier comparison between candidates, with more equal treatment between candidate -- less ignoring low-ranked candidates and ganging up on the frontrunner, for example. You could do 90-minute debates with three half-hour segments -- domestic policy, foreign policy, and whatever the candidates wanted to argue about.

Sure, with 9 candidates to start (Perry, Bachmann, Romney, Paul, Gingrich, Cain, Santorum, Huntsman, Johnson -- I think that's it), you are looking at 36 one-on-one debates, but each candidate would only have 8 debates to worry about, and viewers could ignore things like Santorum versus Bachmann if they wanted. And as candidates dropped out, the number of debates would certainly drop from the maximum number set at the start of the campaign.

/then you could crunch the numbers for winners and losers of each debate, and see who people thought was the overall winner.

TFA's "meet the candidates" section is amusing... from the "What you might not know" part:

Bachmann has cared for 23 foster children over the years.

Gingrich was bitten on the chin by a baby cougar in 1995 during an appearance with TV host and zoologist Jack Hanna. The bite caused a minor abrasion and "just a spot of blood," according to the New York Times.

Huntsman lost his bid for senior class president in the 1970s, then dropped out of high school and joined the rock band Wizard.

Johnson is an outdoor adventurer who has climbed Mount Everest. He's also ridden the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa.

(Paul) has said he's delivered more than 4,000 babies

Perry, originally a Democrat, supported Al Gore in his 1988 presidential bid. Perry joined the Republican Party the following year.

Roemer has diabetes and has taken insulin for more than 35 years.

Mitt is his middle name and comes from an uncle, Mitt Romney, who played professional football for the Chicago Bears in the 1920s.

As an attorney for a Pennsylvania law firm, (Santorum) once represented the World Wrestling Federation, arguing that pro wrestling was entertainment, not a sport, and thus should be exempt from federal steroid regulations, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Obama: "I'm a pretty good poker player."

Seriously, who DOESN'T know that about Bachmann? She screeches it every chance she gets.

True. There's no denying that there is a liberal slant. Well, it's more akin to a vertical incline. But I suppose that is- arguable.

I demand nothing. It is given most freely and always within a few days of expiration.

Newt will be done by the end of next week. It would be shame if one of the women he nailed while married, but he didn't end up marrying came forward and told her story....

Perry will be the last crazy standing.

I wonder if anyone will question Gingrich on his commitment to 'family values'? lets face it - the man is pond scum. NOBODY actually believes he's actually reformed his dickbag ways. I'd like to see someone call him out on it in public.

what makes you think the Democrats would take over? if the Republicans go under, they'll do as much damage to the Democrats as they can on their way down. then a third party can rise from the ashes and rewrite the rules.
