Facebook drama is self inflicted drama.

It's not hiding your email. It has a second message folder called "Other" that people have been to lazy to check or open. (Read this on six hours before it got to Fark.)

You know, maybe I missed it when they rolled it out, but I had no idea the "Other" folder existed. I feel like if FB was going to make such a significant change to their mail system they should have done a better job explaining it.

Not a case of being lazy - people had no idea that "Other" was even there. You had to click on "Messages" to find it. It just happened with no notice at all.

I found out about it three weeks ago, and lo and behold there was a message from my daughter who doesn't want to actually friend me ;)

Meh. I get new message alerts sent to my actual email so I don't have to log in to Crapbook all the time. Found out about this a few weeks ago and checked the "Other" folder and it was all the spammy messages about events I didn't care about and other useless crap... which I had already gotten in my email.

Well I of course didn't know about the "other" box and it's basically just facebook creating a spam box for events and such. Though I did get one fascinating email from a few months ago...

My name is ____, am single I am new to this type of atmosphere in meeting people, I have only been a member for a couple days and I just wanted to know where this will lead to.I enjoyedreading your profile and you are a very Handsome Guy!! I would like to get to know you better. If you are serious about the type of Woman you are looking for, please take the time to get to know me.I don't care about the Age or Distance cos I believe that when it is time for the Meeting I don't care about relocating, and I will Like to know More about a man Like you may be you are the Antel Sent down from God... I will be Glad to hear back from you and Know more about you.. I do have lots of Pics to share with you But I don't like double dating and I don't like staying on the Website that Much So I will be Glad if you can Email me Directly into my Personals Email So we can talk much Better, because as i know this will make our communication more complex and unique and it will help in photo sharing.I will stop here and wait to have your mail when you are less busy Frequently Via Email ___[nospam-﹫-backwards]___*com, So that We can get to know more about each Other,I cant wait to hear back from u,_____

Damn you Facebook! You cause me to miss the woman of my life!!

I also discovered the "Other" folder by accident. It has messages from people who are not your Facebook friends. I've seen nothing but messages from dudes in faraway places trying to pick me up. THAT is why it isn't prominent. Because you don't want to see that you have a message and be disappointed that it's just some dude who barely speaks English asking if you're a "filmstar model" instead of someone from real life.

I was completely prepared to not be at all outraged about this until I went to check my "other" folder and found a message from someone I met months ago who I was trying to add but we were having trouble finding each other on the site (because of security settings and common names, no pics, etc.). The message said, "Let's be friends!" Now I look like a huge jerk for not getting back for 3 months. THANKS, FACEBOOK.

2011-12-10 02:36:44 PM
I read the article, opened the folder and the first message was a 3-month old email from a friend of a friend making me an offer for a gig. shiat.

Dang, I missed a couple of cool events. Apparently Facebook was hiding messages from several local groups I follow. These groups have been good about limiting their traffic to potentially interesting stuff, and I've never "hidden" their posts in my news stream or otherwise marked them as negative in any way. Facebook, this is starting to seem controlling for the hell of it. Back in the days before cell phones, if you had a manipulative passive-aggressive spouse who didn't like one of your friends, he/she would tell that person you weren't home, take a message, promise you would call them back, and then hide the message under a bunch of junk on the countertop or "accidentally" drop it behind the dishwasher, repeat until the person decides you're a dick and stops calling. How is this different?

2011-12-10 03:26:55 PM
The lady in the article? Stupid.
Getting worked up because you don't know how to use Facebook? Stupid.
Not backing up your important work? Stupid.

A neighbor did the same for me when they found my wallet in the alley (before this "others" stuff.) I was super thrilled and six-packs were gifted.

Anyway, it's astonishing to me that anyone in this thread is saying that not knowing about this message folder means someone is "too stupid to use Facebook."

It's like chastising someone for failing to successfully navigate a city where the street names, positions of highways, traffic laws and direction of driving change without notice on a weekly basis.

Wait... your neighbor found your wallet which had some form of identification in it to know it was yours, say for an example a driver license which includes an address and decided to search for you on Facebook instead of walking 50 feet to your door and give it to you?

We got a problem here and it isn't Facebook's Other menu.

Yes, there was another problem, which is that my ID had me in Seattle, while my wallet was found in Denver where I had not yet received a local ID.

Actually kind of a nice way to meet my new neighbors, though!

Hypothetical Imperative: If Facebook had labelled that folder "Probably Spam" would this writer be complaining?

For the most part, you are correct-- but the thing is the "Other" isn't even visible without clicking on "Messages" in the sidebar. If (like me and most other people using FB) you typically access your messages from the notifications at the top, you literally have no idea it is there.

I spend hours on Facebook every week for work, through every corner of its front and back end (hawt) and I had no idea this existed.

It's like if you discovered one day that the USPS had been "helpfully" sorting your junk mail into a second inbox they installed under a false bottom in your primary mailbox, and while most of it is 10% off car wash coupons there are also some letters from Aunt Sally that Postbot 6000 didn't find sufficiently interesting enough to show you.

Agent Smiths Laugh: And this is why I still have a career in IT. There is never any shortage of people too stupid or lazy to figure simple things out for themselves.

True story from a place I thankfully don't work at anymore. Our VP in charge of Engineering is sitting in a meeting with all the other VPs, and the VP in charge of Operations is giving a routine quarterly report, "blah blah blah doubling the size of the call center blah blah plans to hire a hundred new call center staff" WTF??? "here's a graph of call volumes over the last two quarters...."

"Stop right there." The VP of Engineering stands up and says, "Stay right on this slide. I'm going to step out side and make a few phone calls. I'll be less than five minutes." He walks out.

Five minutes later he walks back in and says, "Call volumes tripled in less than a month, and nobody on my team was told about it. Something is horribly broken in the field. When users are having problems, you are supposed to FARKING TELL SOMEBODY, not make plans to expand your headcount by 100%." Yeah, he did scream that part.

At that point the VP of Engineering had veins bulging out all over and had to leave to compose himself.

Lesson: technical support staff usually have no idea whether the issues encountered by users are genuine. Even hands-on IT people will disbelieve (and worse, suppress) reports from users. Unfortunately, that doesn't create any more or less work for software developers such as myself. It just makes us look randomly more or less competent than we deserve, depending on the situation.

If you don't know that 'other' exists then you do not get much 'mail' on facebook. For serious, that folder is always full & blinking with new notifications for me. I knew it existed within 12 hours of rollout. At least all that crap isn't going into my main messages anymore.
