They unionized themselves you farking retard. The federal government does not have the authority to prevent any workforce from unionizing.

TSA shouldn't have badges. They are not cops, they have zero arrest powers. They are federally employed security guards.

FAIL? That must be for the TSA.

One of the first times in recent memory I'd like to give a hero tag to a Republican.

2011-12-10 09:13:49 AM
Here's an issue about which I am in full agreement with the Republicans. TSA screeners are not federal officers and none of them have gone through the federal law enforcement training. Most wouldn't be able to complete the training. Most of the ones I've encountered have been rather dim.

Yes, this is the issue upon which the left and right should find common ground.

Good for us.

HA! Republicans just don't want to give 'em the bennies!

All TSA ass grabbers should be fed to angry badgers.

Hero tag for bill sponsor. Fail tag for subby.

2011-12-10 09:17:49 AM
Yes, instead of doing something constructive about how these security guards routinely abuse what little power they have, let's just take away their badges.

Alright, it's agreed then. Thread is now over.

Aarontology: Wow. She wants to change their uniforms. What a f*cking hero.

I think the subby has outed themselves.

Really, "HERO" for somebody at least taking SOME sort of steps to curtail the idiocy that is the TSA.

The "FAIL" tag is inappropriate here. I'd grant that the TSA is nothing but FAIL, but attaching it to this headline is misleading, at best, and terribly misguided at worst - and dumb in any case.

rocketpants: It's a start in the right direction. Baby steps.

It's not a step in the right direction. It's not a step at all.

This isn't doing anything to limit their power, or to alter their policies to be less invasive. She doesn't care about that 85 year old grandmother getting strip searched; only that the person doing the strip search looks a little too much like a real cop.

LesserEvil: Really, "HERO" for somebody at least taking SOME sort of steps to curtail the idiocy that is the TSA.

They're not curtailing idiocy. They are making a uniform change.

Indeed. Nothing that large can be eliminated overnight but with small steps it can. I would love to ask the candidates what it intends to do with the TSA. The American public ha spoken that this is NOT wanted. What happened to democracy or am I not supposed to ask that?

I don't know about that. Last time I flew in the states a TSA officer approached me and started his sentence with "Furthermore...". I was confused since this was the first time we were speaking, but I was impressed with his attempt to include 'furthermore' into a sentence. It's almost an endangered word.

Fail tag must be for Subby. Of course, on Fark anything suggested by a Republican is to be mocked.

2011-12-10 09:32:19 AM
The purpose of the uniforms is psychological. If they look like actual cops, people will generally treat them as such. I support this policy on the basis of general honesty.

If I am not much mistaken, a TSA agent will have to summon an actual LEO to do the arresting.

Furthermore, I'll take that into consolidation We have some exigent circumstances that may be mitigating factors. Alright sir, step right over here...

It's true.

If anyone else who had never gone through officer training and given a rank by a federal, state, or city police official after receiving said training, they'd be arrested for impersonating an officer of the law.

enry: One of the first times in recent memory I'd like to give a hero tag to a Republican.

I'd consider that more seriously if:

A) a lot of the same reps grumbling about this hadn't been totally on board with it a decade ago when a then-GOP-run Whitehouse spearheaded the TSA/DOHS' creation, and

B) This weren't more than a token, symbolic move to slap the TSA on the hand, at best.

Oh, and while I'm no big fan of the TSA, if you want "professional" behavior out of them, hiring them as professionals, treating them as professionals, and compensating them as professionals wouldn't hurt. The Administration that created this branch wanted something for nothing, and mostly they got exactly what they paid for.

Thank you! Today's do-nothing Congress is not going to pass broad sweeping reforms of anything, much less the TSA. Let's take what we can get now and keep working on getting the rest.

Glad to see that the congress is involved in this very important issue. Wouldn't want them wasting their time on trivial matters.

They should do what Florida did to the toll booth operators.
They had uniforms that looked like security guards'.
They dropped those for Aloha-style shirts and khakis.
Fewer complaints and fewer attempts to injure/fark with operators.

/broken clock or something

2011-12-10 09:43:48 AM
Remember the original TSA uniform was white shirts with cloth badges. Some idiot deliberately made the uniform more cop-like several years ago because they thought more intimidation would increase "respect".

For once Republicans have proposed something that would correct a mistake.

As goofy as the Swiss guards look, from what I understand they all have completed military training. Some of the TSA people that I know are ex-LEO or ex-military, but I guess if I was looking to take a swing at an authority figure, I'd pick a TSA goober long before a Swiss guard.

yeeeep. this is where my mind went. People often underestimate the effects of putting a uniform on someone. it changes your perception of the world and other people.

It contributes to groupthink "us-versus-them" mindset. it has been shown experimentally to dehumanize non-uniformed individuals. what makes them feel up 85 year old grandmothers is the standard tribal thinking that all humans use, coupled with incredibly high perceived stakes (both in terms of security for others and job security for self), and an overly pc society that is unable to discriminate between prejudicial discrimination and good-judgment discrimination.

Don't toss it out immediately just because it sounds ridiculous. Give things a chance, man. You're smarter than this.

Government has bought votes by employing these otherwise unemployable people.

Is it just me, or are the airport checkpoints grossly overstaffed - I see qute a few blue shirted (often obese) scum sitting around doing absolutely nothing.
