93% tune in at least once a week... which is a pretty weak metric. You can't draw meaningful conclusions when the guy listening for 8 hours a day is conflated with the guy who is tuning in for 5 minutes every weekday just for the traffic report.

You can if you're trying to secure advertising dollars.

oldebayer: So there are no more classical or jazz stations anywhere?

In St. Louis, the long-running classical station was converted to a contemporary Christian station. Goddammitsomuch.

Our local NPR stepped up and created a classical HD station that also streams online.

That being said, any farkers actually have an HD radio and would you recommend it?

I listen to music on the radio all the time in the car. I don't feel like making playlists for the ipod and since I usually have one or both kids in the car it's just easier to skip around to the popular hits stations or turn it off during commercials. I just don't want to have to think that much about what to listen to while driving around most of the time.

Now when I'm by myself or at the gym it's a different story.

My brother has one in his car and he really likes it, not sure what stations he listens to though.

Now that my telephone can tell me the score of any sporting event at any time, and it can do so without forcing me to listen to loud, obnoxious commercials, there is no need for radio stations other than NPR.

I tend to listen to my iPod in the car, and even then, usually podcasts; but my radio is tuned to two classical music stations (well, four, but they are doubled up for when I drive into different regions), one jazz, one contemporary (because they do an awesome 80s show of an afternoon).

Why yes, I am 36 - why do you ask?

Haven't listened to the radio in years. Got fed up with the local rock station that somehow had 25 different Nickelback songs, but couldn't find any Van Halen tunes other than "Panama."

It totally depends. IF you have stations in the area that sound like they've got something interesting on their HD-2/HD-3 channels, give it a listen online since most of them are already streaming there. There's some potentially good stuff, mainly from non-comms and the occasional big station with some creativity.

That said, HD Radio is all but a failed experiment. Radios cost too much due to proprietary decoding, the radios that do exist have a hard time keeping the signal because they are send out with less power. The guys who engineered and financed it did a horrific job marketing, and largely spent their time expecting people in 2005 to spend hundreds on a radio with possibly 2-3 stations they'd want to listen to. Then they spend little time creating content that would warrant a change: most HD stations are satellite-fed generic formats or a rebroadcast of AM stations.

Radio Shack was doing a fire-sale on HD Radio add-ons for IPhones, at around $15 at last check. If you're interested, give it a try.

As long as there is classic rock, there will be broadcast radio. And as long as there are middle aged people on the way to their soul crushing jobs who just want 15 minutes of sweet nostalgia going back to a time when their lives revolved around scoring weed off their best buddy's older brother at a keg party and finger banging Suzy down the street, there will be classic rock.

See, I don't get that. I'm 54, so my prime radio-listening days were pretty much right during the peak of what is now called classic rock. And I have to say that damn near everything you would hear on a classic rock station is stuff that I'm now sick to death of. If I'm going to listen to Zeppelin, I need a nice soundboard recording of a decently performed show--that is to say, at least a small measure of variety. And I'm still gonna skip farking "Stairway to Heaven."

But then, I don't claim to be typical.

Listening to the local "Alternative" radio station the other day and I realized everything they were playing was from the 90s. Then I realized those song were old. Then I realized that my "Alternative" radio station was really just rebranded Classic Rock for people in their 30s who didn't realize they were now in the Classic Rock demographic. Then I realized I don't stay up past midnight much anymore. Then I realized I need to get a good life insurance plan.

I keep my clock radio tuned to a top 40 station for just that reason. Irritating music first thing in the morning? Wakes me up right off the bat.

So, in the study's way of thinking, I listen to radio about seven times a week. For 10 seconds at a time.

There's a really good rock station around here that plays a shiat ton of Pink Floyd and David Bowie. Then again I have a computer and mp3 player that will play whatever music I want whenever I want.

I have Sirius, and listen mostly for Howard. I like stations like "Outlaw Country" "XMU" and "Spectrum", and "The Coffee House", but during the week, WFUV in New York has a way better playlist than any of the Sirius Stations, so I still do listen to broadcast radio, only not commercial stations.

2011-12-10 11:27:35 AM
Unfortunately, broadcast radio is the only choice I have for music at the moment, since my stereo crapped out in all ways but the radio. It kills me, because it's too cold to ride in the mornings (in which situation I could stick my iPod in my ears and go), and they pick out the crappiest songs for the morning spin around here, nothing motivational at all, and the last thing I can listen to when I'm trying to get ready for the day is talk.

Very, very funny! I'm in the target demographic, but hate such stations. I've heard those three-minute tunes a zillion times, and don't care to hear them more than, say, once a year.

I haven't listened to broadcast radio in years. The advertising is obnoxious. As for NPR, I find it too dry for the most part, but the handful of NPR/PRI shows I do like I listen to online, because I can listen when I want that way.

When I drive, all I hear is the sound of the other person's voice if someone's riding with me, or the sound of the engine if I'm alone.

I have XM radio in my car, which is nearly a necessity because I'm a traveling contractor and I'm not going to constantly change CDs or hunt radio stations while driving cross country, sorry.

And honestly? It's almost worth the subscription fee to hear Opeth on the radio occasionally.
