I always show a scan of my license on my iPhone and store clerks, bouncers, and even police officers are happy to accept it. I don't see what the problem is.

If I were a senator, I'd worry more about the one that allows the government to manufacture money out of thin air.

Back when I was in college, they made student IDs on the exact same hardward/software combination used to make official state driver's licenses. All one had to do was slip the student ID guy some $ and have her change the template. This was back in Florida, of course. I have no doubt they're still using it, too.

2011-12-10 08:50:17 AM
And before you all jump on it, yes that was a typo. The student ID girl, not guy.

2011-12-10 08:53:27 AM
Well at least there isn't a hidden agenda.. Oh wait.

Senator Casey said. "Pennsylvania just took a major step toward making our licenses more secure and an application like this undermines that effort.

There is it..

From the app description: "Create your coolest license EVER. With Drivers License, you can make realistic, crazy, or hilarious drivers licenses for any state.* " [emphasis added]

http://itunes.apple.com/app/drivers-license/id337295220?mt=8

Yeah, they're not "totally unrealistic". The one I tried looks like a bad fake, but at a glance it could be a valid license. Yeah it says DriversEd on it but they're a driver education and testing company.

The whole idea of apps that you store on your machine was a great leap backward. Thanks for that Apple.

Functionality should stay on the network. That's one of the main advantages to having a network.

Exactly. Since we invented an internet that we can always connect to, wherever we are, and will never, ever fail, why should I have to deal with cluttering up my phone with applications?

For the times when you are off the net, such as flying, and all you have, if anything, is that crappy Gogo that works when it wants to.

Or when Apple pulls the application due to pressure, which is likely.

Right. Moving away from mainframes to PCs was a terrible mistake, and it's wonderful that the computing infrastructure is moving off of our devices back onto machines owned by gigantic companies who have only out best interests at heart. I for one welcome our Goicrozon overlords.

Well, it not so true for out-of-state or out of country. People might be familiar with their own state's licences, but it usually ends there.

Also, the newer licenses are SO funky with holograms and stuff that I think as long as you made something that looked equally advanced (fake or not) it could fool a lot of people.

In Arizona, someone broke into the DMV license place in Tempe and stole the entire equipment suite. I figure it was either student related or illegal alien related. Plus there was the bribe the DMV teller and they could get you a nice brand new driver's license from behind the counter. Saw someone slip a handful of cash to a teller, teller disappeared and came back with the guy's license. He left without having taken the exam or anything. Just had his pic taken then went to the window and left.

Farking corruption. When there is serious money to be made, you can buy anything from anyone. Licenses, people, anything

Well, from this farkers observations, your stance of preferring that most everything is stored off of your personal machine fits quite well with the idea that it's foolish to store things on one's personal machine because there's an alternative. That being said, it's easy to see how that part of the post wasn't intended the main focus. That part sure seems like a mostly throwaway stepping stone, that others have used in the past, to go to his main point. So refute the second half of the post if you want to contribute to the conversation.

Bob16: Maybe you could point out where is said moving from pcs to mainframes was a big mistake.

Mainframes are the perfect example of functionality living on the network, much like so-called "modern" cloud based systems. Putting functionality "on the network" is exactly the same thing as mainframe systems.

Functionality should only live in the network if the function itself is network oriented- social networking, fora, content delivery, etc. Otherwise, the functionality should live where it's consumed.
