Warren just dumped 2 billion on a failed solar farm in CA and now he's naming his kid as successor? I knew it, the man is senile.

He's had a dream life, but now he's toast.

I saw Jimmy Buffet perform with Warren Buffett at the Berkshire stockholders meeting several years ago. It was mildly amusing, but probably the most exciting thing Nebraska ever saw.

FTA: Howard, who is currently a corn and soybean farmer, will become the "non-executive chairman," an unpaid position.

huh? Is he a farmer in the sense of waking up at 4 in the morning and getting to work or is he a "farmer" that runs a company that owns tens of thousands of acres and contracts it out to people that do the actual farming? Nothing against the former, but shouldn't the guy running Berkshire Hathaway have a LOT of experience in the financial sector?

Lots of outrage over of a non paid position with likely little real power. Sounds like he just sits there and calls out "ethic" complaints or what his dad would have considered ethics complaints. I could see outrage if he appointed his son to an actual board or executive position, but this position is nothing but fluff and will honestly involve nothing.

I'd rather pass on such a stupid position myself as McDonald's atleast provides pay. This position gets no compensation and seems merely advisory. Sounds like he will have all the power of a fark thread commentator.

I think by "non-executive chairman", they mean he will be the chairman of the board but not hold the position of CEO or President. If so, that is a powerful position, even if it isn't an executive position and he doesn't get paid. It's not merely advisory - he is a voting member, and in most cases, when there is a deadlock, he casts the deciding vote. In many boards, the chair also has the power to place board members on committees to determine things like executive compensation and compliance. The article said he put his son in that position to protect the company. If his son had no real power, he wouldn't be able to do this.

The only people who really have a right to be outraged are Berkshire Hathaway shareholders.

They have the right, but I'm not sure they have a reason. He'll staying away from financial decisions, he's already been on the board, and he seems to be a competent businessman.

I agree. I made that comment because a few people upthread were making stupid remarks about nepotism. My point was that unless they were shareholders of the company (highly doubtful), their opinion about Howard really didn't matter.
