Prediction: It will be someone who is wildly popular but may not have actually contributed on the field as much as others who aren't as popular.

Payton Manning. He may not have played a down, but the Colt's performance this year shows that he is clearly the team cannot live without him.

Better prediction: It will be Rodgers.

Greatest statistical season by a QB in history, and it's not even close. Green Bay would be good without him, but with him they are having a perfect season.

It sucks that my hometown team is in the same division as him, but I have to respect greatness when I see it. I'd rather the Bears lose to Discount Double Check than Like A Kid Out There any day.

That.

But assuming we limit it to non-injured players, it isn't even an argument - Rodgers.

TO be fair, we should be happy this article was for Brady, and not Tebow.

Ain't that the truth.

His entire argument felt like it was based about 'the Patriots would fall apart without Brady'.

I figure that would have been settled a couple years ago when Matt Cassell filled in for Brady and they still had over 10 wins that year. I am sure Brady is for a couple wins at least, but completely changing the season? I can't see it.

Manning has a lot more of an claim based on how much difference there was in the Colts between last year and this year. If the Colts keep him and he comes back to lead them to 10+ wins, I will give Manning the MVP for decade, no questions asked.

All else being equal, Rodgers will probably get it.

As a fan of the Giants, a team that has played both the Patriots and the Packers, I can say without hesitation that the MVP should be Charlie Whitehurst.

2011-12-09 03:42:13 PM
I don't think there is any argument that it shouldn't be Rodgers at this point. The Packers' defense is far short of formidable. The running game is solid, but not dominant. Rodgers is just out of this world right now and that team is 12-0 because of his performance.

I suppose it's technically possible for a non-QB, non-RB to win the MVP award. It's happened a whole 3 times since 1957. Alan Page, Lawrence Taylor, and.... I can't believe i'm typing this.... the kicker for the 1982 Redskins, Mark Moseley.

Mike Vanderjagt must hate that dude. What's a Vanderjagt got to do to win one?

Where would the Patriots be without Brady? Little-known backup Matt Cassel has virtually no chance of getting this Patriots team to the playoffs.

when tom brady was hurt in the first quarter in the first game of the 2008 season and lost for the remainder of the season, Matt Cassel led the Pats to an 11-5 record.

Curtis Painter/ Orlovsky/ Collins is 0-12 replacing Manning.

this is typical ESPN northeastern favoritism.

He's probably a shoe in for defensive rookie of the year. I think there is probably a case for defensive player of the year. He's had a lot to do with the Broncos recent success.

All that assumes he can get and stay healthy. We missed him against the Vikings. That game wouldn't have come down to a last minute pick and FG if Miller was playing.

James Walker has officially become Peter King ver 2.0. Only this version of Peter King wants to fellate Tom Terrific instead of Bret Favre. No, James Walker, Brady's man meat is reserved for Giselle.

If Rodgers doesn't get this award it could be the crime of the century.

Same here. I feel like he and Frank Gore should both be paid only every other month, since that's apparently when they play.

I like how his whole argument is "Brady has been better over the past 4 weeks, and then the side bar has the following numbers for the season.

QB Yds. Pct. TD INT QBR
Brady 3,916 66.7 30 10 76.6
Rodgers 3,844 70.6 37 5 87.0

(sorry if the formatting sucks)

If James Walker wants to make an argument for MVP of November, he has a good chance of winning. (Timmay?!) But this is a seasonal award, and you can't cherry-pick stats.

Also, if you're looking at how bad the team would be without him, look no further than Caleb Hanie. I'm sure stats geeks have better examples using WAR and other numbers, but God the Bears fell off a cliff when Cutler went out, and then bounced off a ledge and fell more when Forte was injured.

As a Bears fan, I would give the award to Rodgers.

Are you saying that 2008 Patriots are comparable to the 2011 Patriots? They had a good defense in 2008 (at 10th) and are allowing over 35% more yards per game right now. Not to say Green Bay is doing much better defensively, but to compare the loss of Brady in 2008 to what it would be like without him now is ludicrous.

2011-12-09 06:17:36 PM
And, let's be honest, this Packers defense isn't as good as that Pats defense was... yet, Rodgers is probably a better QB than Brady was in their 18-1 season.

So how Aaron Rodgers could not essentially be considered the unanimous MVP right now is beyond me.

Sorry, when you confidently assert that Matt Flynn would "keep the ball rolling" for the Pack you lose all credibility. Unless he means to state the obvious, that Green Bay could be 12-4 and still win the division, he is talking out his arse.

FTA: The award is meant for the player who is the most important to their team. Let that sink in, because this is a key element to this debate.

I'd vote for Peyton Manning as well, because he's the player who his team obviously can't live without.

2011-12-09 06:29:39 PM
I would wager half the GB offensive players would be nothing without him throwing the ball. He has been absolutely lights out and as much as I like to think ESPN isn't bias in this geographical direction (I'm in Baltimore - the east coast) this article just reeks of homerism. It's amazing they turn anyone down from writing for ESPN.

I'm sure Rodgers will be mad about losing league MVP if he wins another Super Bowl and is game MVP. He will have to wipe his eyes with discount doublecheck residuals.

Seriously, by the standard of the article author, if the Broncos win the AFC West, it should be Tebow. It is easy to speculate how the Pack or Pats would be without Rogers or Brady, but we saw how much the Broncos actually did suck in the before Tebow era (BTE). If they come back from 1-4 to actually win the division and finish 10-6 or even 9-5, then how can he not be considered MVP.
