csb:
I met him in New York in the 80s. He was really really nice. He was doing a talk on royalties and how the creators of the most popular works were all skunked because the companies were calling it work-for-hire. I met Neal Adams the same day. Adams seemed like a little kid next to Robinson. They both signed comics for me. I was maybe 12 years old, but they were the ones who framed how I think of comics and their creators.

Here's to you sir, and the zillions of hours of joy and excitement your work brought me. You really truly shaped the world.

Remember when The Joker shot and paralyzed Barbara Gordon? Good times, good times.

FTFY.

At least Lee gave credit to others. Bob Kane just signed his name on everyone else's work for the better part of 30 years.

Are you Genevive Marie's alt?

To Mr. Robinson: Thank you with all my heart. Without Robin I never would have read a comic.

CSB time
Met him at SDCC about 2 years ago. Really nice guy. He took the time to look through my portfolio and made some great insightful comments on one of the Joker pics I did. I'm glad I was able to get an original drawing from him then. One of the highlights of my time there.

Discovering what a total bastard Bob Kane was, was truly an eye opener. Jerry Robinson, Dick Sprang, and Sheldon Moldoff were totally screwed over by him. And before Kane could steal from them, he stole art to create Detective 27.

Past that bit of grumping about Kane, I'd also like to say that Jerry Robinson's contribution to the Batman legacy, creator's rights, and comic book history and appreciation cannot be understated.

NPR (or really, the BBC) had a good story on this guy earlier today. I thought it was cool that he lived to see The Dark Knight and was supposedly overjoyed with the Joker's depiction in that movie. By contrast, I feel sorry for a guy like Bob Kane whose last vision of his character in film was Batman and Robin. Sometimes I think he died of shame.

I have to agree that's an awesome picture. Unfortunately, anything that happened before 2006 is ancient history to a vast percentage of our population.
