fark Yaz. Generic of it was, as far as anyone can tell, the cause of my girlfriend's stroke (well, mini-stroke?) two years ago.

No lingering/negative aftereffects whatsoever, though.

As much as that sucks, it's a known and disclosed rare side effect of all hormonal contraception. Sorry that she was unlucky.

I understood maybe 5 posts so far, and that's mostly because I grew up near Boston. Don't bother explaining, just keep doing whatever you're doing.

I just left a message for my doctor as well since I am on the generic of Yaz. I actually like this pill, but it sounds like it isn't really worth the heightened risks.

Every birth control medication has a risk of causing blood clots. One of the side effects is thickening of the blood. Combine that with family history and/or smoking, and you have an even greater risk.

I don't know if there is a significant difference between different types of the medication (ring, pill, mini-pill, patch etc.), but as far as I know they all have essentially the same side effects.

Not a doctor, but I see a few cases of TIA or mini-strokes every year in young women. Though most of those were smokers. Still took them to the local stroke center, protocol be damned. I'm not taking a risk.

The side effect I rather enjoy is the increased bewbage on the gf

Given that there's a class action lawsuit, I'm of the impression that it's kinda somewhat not as rare with Yaz.

Drug prevents potential conception and/or kills potential mother.

Either way, effective birth control drug is effective.

I read the article. And it is disclosed on ALL hormonal contraception. It's a known risk of taking hormones.

The only thing at issue is whether Yaz causes it more often than other types, or not. The evidence on that is disputed, scientifically.

Felgraf:

The existence of a lawsuit proves absolutely nothing about the prevalence of side effects. Class action lawyers can and will sue even if the scientific evidence is shaky or non-existent, if they think they can get money out of the drug maker.

Again, this is a known side effect of all hormonal birth control. The only thing that's in question is whether it's more prevalent or not with that specific form of the hormone. It may well be, though the evidence is still somewhat out on that. I'm just saying that it IS something that doctors warn people about it. The risk goes up substantially with the woman's age, and hugely if she's a smoker, so doctors warn about that too.

My wife took Yaz for the first three years of our marriage. We decided she would stop taking it (before these recent reports came out), just because we didn't like her being on medication that she didn't really need.

Putting all other risks/benefits aside, her drive SKYROCKETED. So, there's that.

2011-12-09 12:52:42 PM
And people wonder why I don't take the pill, messing with your hormones is not good (unless you medically have too).

Remember dudes, BC isn't just for girls!

Condoms + spermicide + Plan B for breakage = 4 years no scares!

I was on Yaz for awhile. Didn't have any major problems until it was paired with Lexapro. The combination totally TANKED the sex drive which I thought was just because of the SSRI. Nope, when I went off Yaz, it came back.

I wasn't on it for BC either, but hormone management. Still need to go on a new BC for that. Recommendations, ladies? I was looking at Seasonique.

/TMI for the guys probably, but Yaz was FANTASTIC for cramps

I was on Yaz for nearly a year until I finally got sick of the side effects (low sex drive, sudden massive headaches, other TMI stuff not suited for this thread).

I suggest the patch, Ortho Evra. It's not perfect, but the pros outweigh the cons, for me at least. Not having to remember to take a pill every day is a big plus.

The patch is 3 weeks on, 1 week off right? I'd actually have more trouble with that than a daily pill, probably because I have other medsI have to take at the same time every day anyway. Still, noted.

I've been toying with starting up a campaign at Gen Con but I'm not sure it's the kind of system I could teach a newbie in a four hour game slot and have them get anything out of it. The Basic Rules intro scenario was WAY too simplistic, and "Crash On Volturnus" would run too long. The Zeb's Guide rewrite might make things easier, but then you alienate all the old schoolers who never managed to buy that particular book before the entire line got dropped. Argh.

I've taken the patch. That gets really nasty really quick. (Like do not wear dark colored underwear...ever.) Also, I understand they have more hormones than necessary. Has the same side effects (possibility of blood clots, weight gain, etc.) I also tried the ring (NuvaRing). Same principle as the patch but it's a plastic ring you stick in your... well, you know. 1 ring in 3 weeks, 1 week out. You'd think it would fall out but it doesn't. I never had issues with that. And maybe it was just me but the thing made my moods COMPLETELY flat. I wasn't happy, I wasn't sad. It was just meh all the time. Also increases your risk for blood clots and strokes. (There was an article in Mother Jones about the ring.) Also, my bf said he could feel it in there. But it made my periods real light.

I have a friend who really swears by her IUD (I don't remember which one it is but I could ask her). I got snipped so I don't deal with this issue anymore. :)
