Yeah, that can happen when you cut the police force by half. Yet the town I live in in central Jersey has so many cops they have time to sit around on construction sites. I guess they're there to protect construction workers???

Say, didn't you say you're a cultural anthropologist? Any chance you're a Rutgers grad, if you're in central NJ?

Congrats! Though, I'm not a graduate yet. Still in grad school, but hopefully will graduate one day. *knock on wood* Yeah, I'm happy at Rutgers.

I was born and raised in Middlesex County and lived there till I was 23 or so. The reason cops sit in patrol cars at construction sites is to ward off material theft. Back in the day, the mob employed material theft as their go-to easy-buck plan. They'd even steal from themselves, sell the gear and charge the insurance company for the theft value. After a while, every joe shmoe was stealing construction site material. It was pandemic. The mob no longer had the corner on the market so they started going "straight" and hiring cops to make a display and ward off interlopers. Now most builders - straight or crooked - pay for cops to make a presence known. Does it work? I dunno. But it probably beats the hell out of chasing black kids around New Brunswick for selling bags of pot.

Didn't Christie cut the police forces in NJ so he could buy a metric ton of the McRib sandwich and 400 gallons of Coca Cola?

The best part of going to a concert in Camden is if you make one wrong turn leaving the (whatever it is called this year) Center you end up right in the middle of "stopping at red lights is optional" land.

better or worse than the airforce?

I was last in Camden a few years ago. Stopped into a convenience store which, literally, was the only non-blighted building on the block.

I've been in some pretty bad areas, but Camden has a extra layer of "spooky" in some of its neighborhoods were you can literally drive for miles and not see a single human being...just...blight.

Went to a concert there once and was afraid to stop at red lights afterward.

NJ really doesn't have much by way of environmental laws, that's why a lot of pharma factories and household product factories are based there and where the horrific stench comes from.

I haven't read the thread yet, but I'm sure someone mentioned: Governor "Let's Ruin the State!" helped half the police force get fired.

This state actually is incredibly appealing because the public school systems are amongst the best in the country and it's an incredibly safe state. That is, almost everywhere EXCEPT for our cities, which are amongst the worst in the country. The changes are incredibly drastic as you go from inner cities such as Newark and Camden to the suburbs outside such as Montclair and Cherry Hill. Maybe it's like that in other states too, but I feel like it's extra drastic here.

However, Christie wants it all to fail to his buddies can come in and privatize the education system with charter schools, that much I understand, but I have no idea why he hates cops.

I dream'd in a dream, I saw a city invincible to the attacks of the whole of the rest of the earth;
I dream'd that was the new City of Friends;
Nothing was greater there than the quality of robust love-it led the rest;
It was seen every hour in the actions of the men of that city,
And in all their looks and words.

Yeahhhh...

No.

Worked heavy highway in New Jersey for ten years (and tunnels!). The cops are there for traffic control. In a lot of cases they're mandated by state or local law.

NJDOT has a specific traffic division for highway construction. I like those troopers the best; they're great for helping out on site (like stopping traffic so trucks can make difficult turns into the property or slowing down traffic for equipment moves).

Camden literally looks like the pictures you see after bombing raids in WWII. These were brick rowhomes that literally look like a war zone. In the 1980s when my grandmom was in Our lady of lourdes hospital in Camden security literally walked you to your car with a police dog.

Killer Cars: "Camden has a extra layer of "spooky" in some of its neighborhoods were you can literally drive for miles and not see a single human being...just...blight."

Sounds like most of Detroit. And most of Flint. And much of Pontiac.
Anyone with the resources has left. So the people with no where else to go and nothing left to lose concentrate, because scrapping, stealing and squatting is so damn easy and the cops in neighboring communities care about nothing remotely as much as holding the border.

Anyway, it's a special kind of tragic.
