It boggles the mind to ponder how such a thing, especially skeleton, ever came into existence and persevered into an Olympic sport. An elongated, curved, ice-laden track in the woods that you dive onto, headfirst, parallel with the ground, in order to achieve maximum speeds, careening down around slopes and bends that could easily send you on your way as the meat in a toothpick sandwich. But I'm grateful to whichever hammered viking took that first boozy tumble toward spine-compressingly good times.
