Johnathan, your wife has come at last. Perhaps now I can repay you for your kindness to me, yet Mrs. Brisby may serve the rats of NIMH more than we her. Jenner, I fear, could do her harm. He is consumed by a lust for power. Thus far the amulet has remained safely hidden, but if he finds it... Heaven help us.

I've had a few pet rats, and they were all awesome little guys. One of them used to like sitting on my shoulder while I was watching TV. He also pooped in a littler box that I kept in his cage.

The owl scared the hell out of me when I was little. I look forward to terrorizing my own kids with it soon.

Don't wild rats live in a colony? Any social animal should exhibit some form of empathy.

people often act surprised when i recommend rats over hamsters, gerbils or even guinea pigs. simple fact is they are intelligent and social. the biggest negative to a pet rat is the short life span and the fact they poop constantly. rats enjoy play and make good pets, although you do need to have them in pairs.

although i have also fed rats to many many other living things. sadly for the rats they are a prey item and i am a herpetologist. however for rodents i can't recommend much else.

Should they be separate genders and not neutered?

I would be willing to share my cheese, so there go's your theory!!

Most strikingly of all, rats still prioritised their cage-mates when offered the option of ''freeing'' chocolate chips from a second restrainer tube.

That's a little hard to digest. We use rats for deadly and painful experimentation, while testing shows them to be morally superior to some, if not most, human beings.

I have a pet hedgehog, I don't know if he's a rodent or not but as for small animals who live in cages they are pretty similar. They also poop constantly, but they do well without another hedgehog (actually you need separate cages for multiples but they can be together when supervised) Cats and most dogs will not mess with them, so they play well with traditional pets. They can be antisocial but most of them are pretty friendly little guys and even the crankiest of them doesn't have sharp enough teeth to break the skin.

Well, except for the Shamen rat, that one just spawned anvils on the other rats and took the chocolate.

I have two hooded rats. And one just loves to sit on my shoulder as we watch TV.

Unless you want 2 rats to turn into 20, yes.

I've seen this sort of behavior with Zebra finches. I had one a couple of them get out of a cage (both females). When I tried to grab one, a small, sort of sickly one, the other flew between us and went berserk. I couldn't believe this little creature being so brave.

Rats can also work as a team towards a common goal.

So what you are saying here is that rats reproduce asexually, unless with a member of an opposite gender, in which case rats do not reproduce.

Technically it was the fleas on the rats not the rats.

Put me in the group that thinks rats are good pets. Way more intelligent than gerbils and hamsters. But you got to give them your time. Take them out of the cage daily. You won't be disappointed.

They don't crap constantly. Mine don't, at least. The young ones are a bit incontinent, but by year one they learn to crap in a corner of their cage, on their own, without any training on my part. By then, you can bring them out to play with party goes and be reasonably sure they wont be a problem, and they'll wait to get back to the cage to let loose.

This. I had an awesome pet rat, Zeus, in my apartment in college, and he and I were both basically nocturnal. I spent time with him everyday and trained him to not have accidents, and also to come to his name, and other cool things. So I could let him scavenge around and he would stay out of trouble. Nice little guy.

The one in the 2cd picture looks like my sweet little Spirit. She is such a mess and handful and loves to get into everything.

CSB:

Last night I ordered pizza and as I was sitting down at the desk, watching TV, here comes Spirit, as she just ran up to the desk, and plopped down in the middle of the plate and just started to munch on the pizza, like it was her own damned food.

Needless to say she and the other rat had pizza last night, for dinner.

After keeping rats for the last eight years, the last of my rattie boys passed away a couple months ago (Just couldn't afford to keep them anymore, and their 2-3 year lifespans were just too heartbreaking). It wasn't until recently that I break the habit of breaking off little bites of whatever I was snacking on to give them. Rats. Coolest animals ever.

I miss my boys so much.

Ratties are adorable. Smart, too. (Yes, you can housebreak them/litterbox train them, and they are roughly as intelligent as a dog--without the yipiness.)

I had rats for years and still obsess over rats but now I live were animals aren't permitted. I probably have wild rats living near by (almost everyone does) but I'm not allowed to have any as pets; I miss them pretty badly. *sigh*
