I've used a hairdryer to melt an ice blockage in my water pipes. The house still stands.

If you need to melt the ice, a blowtorch doesn't seem like the least efficient way.

This sounds like something you'd see Clark W. Griswald do

Since this is in the news at least 20 times every winter, you would think people would have learned by now to use a hair dryer. You only need to heat the water to 33, not boil it, and copper pipes will conduct that heat right into the wood in your walls even if the flame never touches wood. I guess there is just no teaching the American idiot.

Only suckers clear ice/snow manually. I use napalm on my driveway.

They move down to Torrance County in NM.

The funny part to me is that the guy wasn't even thawing pipes - he was melting ice on a walkway OUTSIDE and (presumably) set the siding on fire...that just seems particularly "ARISTOCRATS!" to me somehow...

Are you crazy, and use a hair dryer outdoors with a cord on the wet ground?

Having just moved to Denver area from California and experiencing my first real winter, I think I might be tempted to use any means possible to get this snow/ice off the ground. It's only been here a week but I'm tired of it already!

Get used to it. My 'ol man used to go to Denver a lot on business and he said Denver has two seasons: Cold and damned cold

"Native" Coloradans are a lot less winter-savvy than they make themselves out to be. The Metro Area gets 1" of snow, and suddenly the roads are jammed with accidents where one car slid into the back of another because they didn't adjust their speed or following-distance to account for the possibility of sliding. As a NorCal Import, it's not very impressive to watch, time and time again. Lots of people seem to fall into the "4WD means I can brake twice as effectively!" trap. The rest just don't appear to give it any thought whatsoever, and just count on their vehicle doing what it would do in the middle of July.

Yes, but set the house on fire and the ice will be gone in no time!

I guess this means he was successful.

If ice forms on your roof your roof is not properly insulated. Instead of removing ice each year, see if you can get an insulation grant from your from your Friendly Commie Gubbermint, or do the job yourself and end up on Fark for something more interesting than a house fire, falling through the ceiling, for instance.

Insulation will pay for itself in a few years unless your home is a complete dump worth burning down for the sake of the neighbor's property values.

P.S. You might also try to get a subsidy from your neighbors to burn the house down and end up on Fark for that.

Were there a couple of hard pipe-hitting Nubians nearby with a pair of pliers, too?

You really think that? Or just trolling?

I get ice dams every year on my roof. the reason is the 3.5' overhangs that were common on older homes (Mine built in 1921) - although I have restored the entire house and everything has been insulated you cannot stop the fact that you have these thin, long overhangs that are exposed to weather on nearly all sides.

I've never taken a blowtorch to them as there are much better alternatives but it happens on all the neighboring homes of that era.

probably not, they were most likely in indo-china sitting in a bowl of rice.

Sweet jebus, who is writing these stories in Denver? FTFA, " The fire that damaged the outside of the home, but firefighters stopped it from spreading inside, according to the agency. "

Is everybody in Denver just Tebowing 24/7 so that even simple sentences must be outsourced to India?

Bonus fail to subby and mods since " The fire that damaged the outside of the home, but firefighters stopped it from spreading inside." does not equal "burns the house down."

Fresh squeezed water is often hard to get in the winter, but it's totally worth the effort.

They don't understand that 4 wheel drive does not help you at all if you have no traction.

FTFY

That said, here in Minnesota we have people dragging snowblowers onto roofs - usually at a low enough height where a roof rake would do the job. And yes, they fall and are injured. Better than burning down the house, I suppose.

Exactly. Or that your drivetrain type has anything whatsoever to do with the number of wheels you're applying braking to.

I once watched a guy applying a propane torch to his frozen water pipe on the townhouse next to the one I lived in. Except that the pipe he thought was the frozen water pipe was the natural gas pipe.

I was just a college student and he was a big grown up so he didn't believe me when I told him that was what he was doing until I showed him the same pipe sticking out of his gas meter.

At least he could be sure after that that he didn't have a leak, I guess.
