You live in Arizona. I think that's all that needs to be said.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

Now that a pack of smokes costs $15 in NYC, it is getting close to reflecting the actual cost incurred by society to treat all the medical problems associated with smoking.
It's like a forced carbon credit that you buy every time you pick up a pack of Camels. Except that the carbon is in your lungs.

it used to be you could order 2 cartons of Marlboros off of the internet for about 50 bucks, but even those days are gone now.

Oh don't worry, legions of New Yorkers will no doubt drop in to tell us all how NYC is The Greatest City in the World and what a great guy Mike Bloomberg is.

IMO there has to be a special extra hot corner of hell for Mike Bloomberg and the NYPD.

I was going to say something but rolladuck and everyone else has things pretty much covered.
Just a damn shame this product was ever available to take lives and create addicts.

Smokers make me glad that we have lung cancer.

the fact that the antismoking nazis want to ban e-cigarettes only proves that they're only interested in dictating other people's behavior, and have no interest in the public good.

For a city that never sleeps, they seem to have dozed off on this one. PA hammered "roll-you-owns" to death (literally) last year. Now the RYO's put something like 1% pipe tobacco in the RYO bags and sell it as "pipe tobacco".

/gives me a headache, switched back to big tobacco

Next we ban Soda. tax the shiat out of it.
then Chips of every kind.
they are all bad for you and affect the public.

Check your facts. The Dutch did a study that shows in the long run smokers are cheaper to care for because they die sooner. You will never see the US do the same study because it isn't politically correct (or do people consider it morally) to say people can choose to die in this country. This whole cigarette taxes and bans are pushed for revenue and the anti-smoking agenda not for cost savings

I don't smoke but I believe every adult has the right to choose for themselves.

2011-12-09 12:53:07 AM
I'd like to quit smoking, but at $5 a pack it's such a bargain.

2011-12-09 12:53:23 AM
This should have an asinine tag.
"They say the roll-your-own shops hinder the city's efforts to get people to quit smoking"

Who are they to decide if you should or shouldn't smoke?

I don't know why it's socially acceptable to smoke a pack of cigs a day, but not to drink a six-pack a day.

Maybe neither should be? Maybe if you're smoking more than 2 or 3 a day there's something wrong with you?

Nah, that couldn't be it.

Indeed. If they can't handle an occasional sniff of smoke, they are true pussies.

no, for real

Can't you just buy the tobacco online and roll it yourself in your home? My uncle does that. He's been doing that for years, and he lives in South Dakota where you can still get cigarettes for "cheap." (I don't know, I don't smoke.)

Time to tax food, fatties!

palad: I don't know why it's socially acceptable to smoke a pack of cigs a day, but not to drink a six-pack a day.

I don't think it's really all that socially acceptable, actually. It's weird for me to be around people who have to go take drugs every couple hours. My dad has been a 2 pack a day guy for decades, and it still seems odd when he'll excuse himself multiple times from dinner to go light up. People don't say anything but you know they're thinking "wtf is this guys problem".

2011-12-09 12:57:09 AM
I'm anti-public smoking but this is absurd, Taxes on cigs are high enough already, All I ask is that smokers have to keep it to private property and private businesses should be required to post big signs at the entrance that this is a smoking establishment so that consumers can make informed decisions.

At $15 per pack, Bloomberg at least has given job opportunities to the mob selling stolen smokes.

It's amazing that liberal nannies (like Bloomberg) can fully understand that you can get less of something like smoking or consuming alcohol or sugary drinks when you tax them, unless it's income or investment, then suddenly their brains go dark, and they sputter about how trickle down economics didn't work, while Reagan cut taxes and created 20 million new jobs and revenue doubled.

I'm a non smoker and even I think this sort of reasoning is BS.

Where does the buck stop? Do we slowly find every activity in life that is bad for you and tax it to alleviate "..the actual cost incurred by society to treat all the medical problems associated.." with them? What are we left with? Green veggies, mandatory exercise (if you want to avoid the 'sedentary lifestyle' tax) and the like.

What about intelligence? Arguably stupidity costs taxpayers millions in prisons, courts, welfare etc. Should there be a minimum IQ tax?

farking commies.

This. I'm not a smoker--I grew up in a household of chain smokers--but going after e-cigarettes seems kind of self-righteous. It's completely about policing a behavior that doesn't affect you because you don't like it personally.

Just wait till they come after your booze and/or junk food next after there aren't enough smokers left for the tax dollar addicts to get their fix.

Living near tobacco country helps.

New York is indeed the Greatest City in the World.

Mike Bloomberg has always been a scold but for the first few years he was a scold at the right time, and he did a good job with the city bureaucracy. But like Rudy, he has overstayed his welcome. Also, crime is back up; no one cares what COMPSTAT says, everyone knows it. If NYPD were deployed against real crime they wouldn't have time to pepperspray coeds.

I quit smoking years ago. If you want to smoke cigarettes, you should be free to do so. The same goes for marijuana.

I really don't recommend people start smoking, it's a bad deal all around. But paternalistic douchebags with delusions of grandeur like Bloomberg and his "private army" are far more harmful to society than smokers
