Frankly, Anyone who has a PhD has the 'right' to be as arrogant as Newt is - that's what they're trained for. And the fact that it's Tulane, and not an 'oral roberts' type school gives him a certain amount of credibility. We leftists always talk about the value of liberal arts and the desire to be governed by 'philosopher kings' ... well, newt seems to be in that group ... that doesn't mean that we need to elect him. It just means that our blanket statements sometimes are a little too broad to reflect what we really want.

Even Plato was a bad candidate - he advocated a state where children were raised by the state instead of by their parents - something that almost nobody in america would condone today.

I think "recivilizing all Americans" takes the cake. I'm sure most of Fark would need recivilizing by Newt's standards.

Not to mention very strict censorship... for Plato, that is. I'm sure Newt would sympathize though.

There's a difference between arrogance and megalomania, and Newt suffers from the latter. It's one thing to think "I'm better than everyone else," another thing entirely to think "I should be ruling everyone else." And that's where most politicians are, Newt's at "the world NEEDS ME to rule everyone else."

Newt thinks he's a savior. He believes he's the key to reforming the world according to a singular vision that only he can grasp.

And as pointed out up-thread, he's probably a sociopath too.

What a farking egomaniac.

"...the 4 best examples of this kind of popular effort to renew America are:
1. The Jefferson-Madison-Burr invention of the Democratic Party to replace the Federalists;
2. The Jacksonian coalition to replace John Quincy Addams, Henry Clay, and the National Bank, and;
3. The McKinley business-progressive-urban coalition to defeat the threat to modern industrialism
Any effort smaller than this is doomed to fail."

Good thing he knows history. He sucks at math.

Yeah. That bit about him being the arbiter of American and world civilization doesn't smack of megalomania at all.

These are heartland Republicans.They may be inclined to be forgiving regarding Newt's history

The rest of America is apt to be a bit more hard-nosed.

The right finds itself in the same-old pickle... appease the base, lose the moderates and independents. Choose the "safe" candidate with broader appeal, lose the base.And now they've got the fact that the "safe" candidate is a Mormon... which complicates things even more.

Hmmm ... now, which previous presidential candidate does he remind me of? Oh, yeah: Fact Magazine published an article polling psychiatrists around the country as to [Barry] Goldwater's sanity. 1,189 psychiatrists appeared to agree that Goldwater was "emotionally unstable" and unfit for office ...
