I'm torn here. Do I make a Catholic altar boy joke with 35 and 27 being too old or do I make a joke about how Notre Dame football fans still think their team is relevant.....

No wonder they made the BCS title game. 'Bama grads probably came up with the computer formulas.

Christ, was it just four years ago that Kansas was 12-1 and nearly won the Big XII? I doubt that Weis will help, but lord knows they can't get any worse, and hopefully will get better and be at least competitive again.

rcf1105: Christ, was it just four years ago that Kansas was 12-1 and nearly won the Big XII?

I wouldn't say that, as they didn't even win the North. But they did win the Orange Bowl.

Yeah. They were the equal of Mizzou in football four years ago. One's done reasonably well since then. The other one is Kansas.

I see Kansas has went back to the "how many ax handles wide is your ass" metric to determine a coach's abilities.
I understand Fat Phil Fulmer (aka the Great Pumpkin, Triple F) was also in the running.

I saw Weis on tv a couple weeks ago, fark sake he is grotesque. Walking with a cane. Sure Charlie defenders, tell me it's because he has a bad knee. But you ten to get bad knees when you weigh 400+ lbs.

He seriously looks like Chet from Weird Science when Lisa zapped him.

I'm seeing this hire take a lot of heat, but personally I kind of like it. What, because now KU will miss their chance to get Chris Peterson?

Look, any other candidate for this job was going to be a have-not conference guy like Gill who would struggle to get recruits, or some major programs OC or DC who is still an OC or DC for a reason. The guys with real futures were already being snatched up by better programs.

I know there's some baggage here with Weis, but why not take a shot with him? At the very least he's probably going to be able to land a decent QB recruit; someone will buy that "I'll make you the next Tom Brady" line. Sure Weis failed at ND but he's not exactly alone in that either. KU's a lot lower pressure and off the radar, if he's got any kind of future as a head coach he should be able to make it work here. The upside here if Weis succeeds is tremendous, and the downside is negligible considering where the program is right now.

Since this is a Kansas thread and I never get to ask this: how in the hell did Mangino stay so damn fat? Head coach isn't exactly a desk job. You're always up and moving around, coaching, talking to recruits, all that. I understand it's a very time-intensive job, so you don't have time to eat right and exercise, but the man was just massive the entire time he was at KU.

rcf1105: Since this is a Kansas thread and I never get to ask this: how in the hell did Mangino stay so damn fat?

Could say the same for Weis. KU saved money by not having to hire a new tailor. Mangino's stuff was still there. Well, my headline said something like that anyway.

I miss Mangino.

Thats what I was thinking, their offense looked horrendous this season and that was supposed to be the teams strong point this year.

Hearing Gus Malzahn may be coming as OC/HC of the future, given Charlie's health problems, and possible sanctions coming down on Auburn in the near future. Also, Jim Leavitt as DC is basically a done deal.

It's also possible that Crist from Notre Dame could come to grad school and be the quarterback for 1 season, since Weis recruited him.

As an alumn, I like that we're apparently swinging for the fences (having a cash machine for a basketball program helps), but I'm not sure Weis is the guy to do it with.

2011-12-09 06:21:52 AM
As an FSU fan...sad trombone. Watching Weis try to run his offense with the band of midgets Meyer left behind was even more glorious than watching Addazio's offense last year.

On the other hand, glad to see KU won't be taking Mark Stoops from us, even if I thought that was unlikely from the get-go.

I doubt the basketball program is much of a cash machine. Last I looked (and this was admittedly a few years ago), even top tier basketball programs like Kentucky and Duke only brought in the kind of money you'd see at middling football programs. I doubt Malzahn winds up there as OC. He'll have his own team pretty soon.

Kansas is usually in the top 25ish for total revenue, that ain't because of football.

Eh, close enough to make the Border War game sell out and draw national attention to the rivalry. Probably the best game I've ever seen played in Kansas City. It wasn't a sure thing that Mizzou was going to win that one, but in the end, we pulled it out.

Kansas is one of the few lucrative basketball programs. Their problem is that their last AD was a scumbag who left their department in huge debt. Oh, and he stole exercise equipment, fired their one competent football coach, hired Turner Gill to a guaranteed $10 million contract, and apparently didn't notice the ticket scalping scheme being run out of his office by his hand-picked employees.

Kansas' biggest football problem is its attitude towards football. "Wait until basketball season" doesn't sell tickets, nor does it give the football players and coaches the respect they deserve.

The correct answer, of course, is 42.
