Genders quite often get flipped around all sorts of ways in productions of Shakespeare. It's pretty safe to cast either male or female for spirit/fairy characters like Puck or Ariel- it happens a lot with Ariel, especially. Even characters like Richard III, Prospero and Hamlet are played by women, and have been for a really long time. A lot of times it comes off as gimmicky, but it can be a really cool way of experiencing the text.

Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) as Data. Just as smart, just as strong, just as fast.

Would that have really changed the Spock character much? The whole "overly logical non-human learns the value of friendship" is a plotline that's been used about 100000000 times in Star Trek, and usually a few major arcs are dedicated to it. (Off the top of my head, just from Voyager: the holographic doctor[genderless], the obligatory vulcan[male], the severed borg ambassador[very, very female].) Not really a gender-specific character arc so I don't think gender-swapping it really qualify as an interesting new take on the trope.
