Little do they realize that the drone is still active and sending information back to US intelligence

Looks like they got their hands on a copy of Final Cut.

Well shiat, really makes you wonder how much secretive equipment is on the thing. Maybe its a trojan horse

It would be hilarious if the onboard computers are rigged with a Trojan designed to infect Iranian military systems: "OK, let's get the I/O port hooked up and take a look at those control codes..."

I would LOL so much if it's just a cleverly designed EMP that the US hopes Iran will place in a high security military base.

Another article says Iran claimed to have brought it down by electronic warfare.

It might have self-destruct charges to erase or explode any sensitive equipment inside. Surely somebody anticipated drones might come down in enemy territory. But did they require a human on base to push the big red button, or did they program it to autonomously suicide to avoid capture and interrogation?

When that thing transforms, Iran is f*cked.

Came to ask that - wonder why it doesn't explode once it's out of control or something. Unless (as has been suggested) it's doing it's job now that they have it.

All we have to do is make them think they are existing in The Cube and they have to find a way out.

It's all part of the plan. When Imadimajibajaba comes to have a look, the only midget member of the Navy Seals is going to pop out and put two in his brain.

It's in rather remarkably good shape for having been shot/brought down.

It should be rigged so it will blow if it gets below (say) 5000 feet for 30 seconds without the operator throwing the "destruct disable" switch on his console. Going to be hard to pick the little bits up over an area if it explodes a mile up.

I find it odd that they hide the landing gear. Incidentally, if it crashed, why is it not more banged up?

Anyone ever consider that this might just be a mocked up shell? It's not as if there are no photos of it online.

Anyone remember that old article about how it was revealed that our drones were sending back surveillance data unencrypted? And how everyone said it wasn't really a problem because mumble mumble mumble.

Most likely Iran is jamming all radio signals around it. I believe the control frequencies were leaked when it was found out that people were able to hack the drones because the US gov't didn't bother to encrypt the data coming to/fro them. Plus from that data it wouldn't surprise me if people have dedicated themselves to reverse engineering the things - we've certainly killed enough people over there in any of those countries to have pissed off someone who is capable of reverse engineering.

Dealing with US Military regulations with regards to combat and weaponry leads me to seriously doubt that sort of thing is on this craft. The rules are written to preserve life at all costs, and it'd be an extremely hard sell to convince anyone to put self destruct on that type of vehicle just due to the damage that could be done from a single malfunction.

Clear it's memory? Maybe.

Self destruct? Never. DTRA would have visions of a drone deciding to self destruct during transportation and yank the plug right there.

Notice it looks more like the computer generated images of the 170 on Wikipedia than like the real thing? They can't show the landing gear because that's much harder to fake.

Look, this is not a fake. A massive security breach has happened.

This means, effective 1/1/2012, Oprah is president. Men will have to wear American flag pattern top hats. Women will have to wear elbow length gloves with an eagle image on them. Also, the phrase "As American as apple pie" will be replaced by "As American as chewable vitamins."

It probably took them hours to put that thing back together.

Luckily, it appears that they used military-grade masking tape on the wing...

Something is really off here. I worked on the X-45 program. All of it's C&C radios were encrypted, and if you were to successfully jam it, the aircraft would just switch to its "Loss of Comms" flight plan and return home. I find it hard to believe that the RW-170 is so far behind what I was working on five years ago.

2011-12-08 04:15:47 PM
I wonder if they took over the remote controls and guided it down china or russia may have given them the electronics and codes

I will point out that the wing joint looks altered from the photos that I saw of the RQ-170 before. I don't know how much damage the craft encountered. I am aware that while the RQ-170 uses very sophisticated sensor systems, leading-edge stealth technology was not included.

Of course, I remember reading that the RQ-1 Predator video feeds were unencrypted. I hope that the Iranians didn't figure out that the Americans were flying the RQ-170 with lightly encrypted or unencrypted transmissions.

Word that the US considered blowing up the drone has me believing that this was no accident.

Because we get to play the evil antagonist in real life.
Not saying Iran is better or equal, but America is not a "good guy" and never has been this altruistic good guy out for freedom. Like any nation-state, America's actions are based on whatever works to the advantage of the ruling elite.

Because it was intentionally desinged that way? Or that it's a shell because there isn't a living breathing pilot on board controlling it and reporting on the survivors?

2011-12-08 04:18:10 PM
Mr Guy: Clear it's memory? Maybe.

The computers on the F/A-18 have a dedicated piece of hardware for this with probably my favorite euphemistic name of all time: the "hard landing" sensor.

/ you also have to blank all the displays after the crew ejects

Maybe it's time to drag these bad boys out of mothballs... again:

www.militaryfactory.com

Even with advances in air defense technology, it's still extremely difficult to shoot down something flying at Mach 3+ at 80,000ft. Plus, you can't jam a pilot.
