They should still be called the California Angels.

Sorry, Rangers.

I don't know about easily. Those two additions give them an approximate 7 WAR upgrade over the 2011 team. Enough to close the gap, but the Rangers are still a very good team. It won't be a 10 game win for either team next year.

Winning the AL West and beaning batters in the World Series are two entirely different things.

Sayonara, CJ "Knife Fighter" Wilson.

They still have too many players on the team making too much money.

Between Wells and Hunter they have $39 million, and neither is any good. I can see them trading at least one of them in the next few days.

i think it's actually about 10 or 11, but yeah, that makes them a ~95 win team using simple math. but of course most of the rest of angels field players are getting old or suck, see hunter, wells, abreu, etc. the suck being wells.

they are really going to hate that quarter billion dollar deal in about 3 years. hell, they are going to hate it in 2 years. albert is on the decline.

The Angels should also add a win by playing anyone by Jeff Mathis at catcher for half the season, now that they paid Toronto a ton of money to take him off their...

Wait, this just in. They actually traded Jeff Mathis. And got a baseball player in return. A professional one, even. I mean, a fringe reliever who can't hit the strike zone, but someone.

Heh, any stories? I'm obviously not in DFW....

I saw some segment a couple years ago where he identified himself as a "straight-edge" and a Taoist, and it was basically him in his apartment or home jamming on a guitar with a friend of his.

No, but I don't think the differnce in Feliz and Wilson is going to be more than 3 games. Either way, the progression and regression of the other players on the rosters will ultimately decide it.

I don't hate CJ, but he pretty much epitomizes the concept of the douchebag. So, sucks that the Rangers are losing a quality pitcher, but it's hard to feel too hurt by the news.

I do my best to ignore Rangers stuff, but from what I hear on the radio he's the sort of guy you just want to punch in the face every time he starts talking. The local sports guys love to joke around with the pitching staff, and CJ acts like he's above all this nonsense and drones on and on about his lifestyle.

2011-12-08 12:57:16 PM
The Angels are paying a lot of money for a guy who led the AL in walks in 2010, one of his two full seasons as a starter on his resume. If 2011 Wilson was for real, the price is right. If they get five years of 2010 Wilson, they're going to be kicking themselves.

Stuff like that definitely made people think he was a little snotty/loopy, but there were also a few press conferences during the playoffs this year where he basically bragged about all sorts of sh*t, including the fact that he owned a 70" TV but that he never watched it. Very douchey.

They can't trade Wells, not unless they eat basically all of the contract anyway, so they may as well keep him around and hope he repeats his 2010 somehow. Hunter and Abreu are free agents after the 2012 season, I think they may keep them around as well. If anyone's getting traded it's probably Morales. Maybe Trumbo, and maybe Bourjos if they decide they want to put Trout in center this year.

Your Zionist Leader: While I'm not saying you're wrong, buying championships doesn't normally work out. See: Miami Heat, Philadelphia Eagles, New York Mets......

Strangely enough, I don't see the Angels as "buying a championship" here. They've proven they can develop talent through a good farm system, made some smart trades except for their recent Vernon Wells retardation, and generally have a good baseball infrastructure. It's not like they were a terrible ball club before they added Pujols and Wilson. And that's coming from someone who hates the f*cking Angels.

This doesn't make them locks for the World Series. They desperately needed Pujols in the middle of the lineup, but beyond Howie Kendrick and Trumbo the offense isn't particularly scary, and is definitely still inferior to Texas. CJ Wilson is going to be like the #3 or #4 starter in their rotation.

They'll challenge Texas, no doubt, but they may not even walk away with a playoff spot with these additions.

There is a lot of home grown talent on that team. Weaver, Kendrick, Trumbo, Morales, and soon Trout. That's enough talent right there to keep them in contention in the AL West. Yes they have signed a few big money outsiders, but with the exception of Vlad and the first few years of Hunter they have largely been busts. Pujols will be a great addition, the Angels needed a marketable face of the franchise.

C'mon now, the Vernon Wells trade helped free up Jeff Mathis to get more at-bats, and we all know the offensive tour-de-force he is.

I disagree. While I'm certainly not gonna call them World Series favorites, right now, there's no better rotation in the AL, and this is more than enough to overtake Texas for the West. Today is the last day of the Winter meetings, but there's still a lot of offseason left, though, so we'll see.

Local Rangers fan, and never got the impression from anything I've heard or read that CJ was a douchebag. He is quirky, abstains from all alcohol, tobacco and and drugs, likes racing and playing guitar. He is totally focused on improving himself any way possible. That said, CJ tries to make every pitch perfect instead of trusting his stuff & throwing it in there. Results in unnecessary walks and hit batters.

I'm still not impressed by Trumbo. All through the minors (outside of the offense-heavy PCL), he never showed the ability to get on base reliably. Now that there's a ton of video on him, I can't see pitchers putting the ball in the strike zone too often. He was 6th in MLB last year in swinging at pitches outside the strike zone (43%, behind such luminaries as Vlad and Alfonso Soriano).

Yeah, the back end of my remarks weren't directed at anyone in particular. But the "buying a championship" meme doesn't really fit here, IMO.

I'm not sure why Morales doesn't become tradeable now. He's due for a deal soon, and it's been alleged that Morales was going to be problems to resign due to Boras as agent.(along with Weaver initial word was, fortunately Weaver blew him off and signed last year) and be expensive. Morales is a credible, young player and has a ton of upside. As an Angels fan I was content to see him grow with them, unless resigning turned into some hairy mess.

The Angels have made some odd deals they find ways to get out of, probably for their propensity to sign questionable players after one great year (Gary Matthews Jr for one). They may take it on the hard end for a bit but the ship rights itself.

The Angels just added the biggest Latino name player in one of the nations biggest Latino markets. The Dodgers went Kershaw and Kemp and those were solid signings but for the casual latino baseball fan in the LA/OC county areas, this might bring more $$ in in addition to the Fox TV deal.

If you're not an Angels fan and wont be pressed to buy exhorbitantly priced goods, stress over their rotation and finances, or be pissed they paid big money to not do well, why do you sound so angered? Oh wait, never mind, you're just bitter. Spray your hate, friend, it will surely help whatever club you root for do the right thing.
