Occupy Congress.

Ah. Cantor. How surprising.

He made a profit by betting the US credit rating would be downgraded.

Congress exempts themselves from a lot of the legislation they pass. They're immune from the equal opportunity employment act, OSHA regulations, EPA regulation, the disabilities act, and I suspect quite a few others as well. Like insider trading or lying to federal agents or illegally downloading music.

Because they suck.

2011-12-08 11:56:33 AM
Can't they amend the bill to say "but just for Pelosi"?

But but Pelosi

Okay, we tried. We lost. Time to move on.

You won't see me on Fark any more. I'm getting a nose job, facial tuck and hair transplants, converting to fundie-Jeebus-loves-me, and registering as a Republican so I can run for Congress next year.

I might as well embiggen myself if I can't have any social justice.

fark off and die, Cantor, you farking scumbag.

wait, congress appears to be crooked and filled with thieves?

o.k. I got myself back up from the floor now.

same ol' same ol'

for those that are new to being displeased with our broken and corrupt system, I extend a hardy "welcome to the party!" & follow with "what the hell took you so long??"

WTF are you talking about? Most of us want to shrink the government significantly. If we could remove 90% of the (R) from the government the country would be much better off. We all know it takes a liar and a thief to lead other liars and thieves so the (R) sticks around.

I'm not entirely sure that it's going away. It's got 202 cosponsors as of this morning, and things like this, that you could probably get 90% approval for across the country, don't usually just go away. I don't think Tim Walz (D-MN), an original author, is going to let it.

I think this was more about territorial pissing contests than anything else. Bachus wanted to fast track it to cover his own ass politically (he was prominently featured in that 60 minutes report), and the other 4 committee chairs who had jurisdiction over it didn't want it to get away from them without their opportunity to... "look" at it.

But if this isn't acted on by next fall, it'd be a great commercial to run: an anti-corruption bill written by 2 Dems dies in committees in the Repub-controlled House. I have a tough time seeing the R's letting that happen, but we'll see.

Time to be honest and just say it.

Wow Republicans attack a Democrat for doing something (even though Republicans did it too) then block the legislation to that would fix it.

They do this all the time. The cry about earmarks and blame Democrats for it even though they do it just as much if not more and they block and repeal legislation that would help with the problem.

They also cry about deficits and then destroyed Paygo!!!

Passing legislation that would make government effective and useful would destroy one of the main planks they run on: that government can't be effective or useful.

I love the 'Logic':

Congress is corrupt, but pointing the finger at the people doing the corrupting is somehow wrongheaded.

Um...from the sound of the article they're not trying to shoot down the bill. They just want time to review the bill. Apparently Bachus was fast tracking the bill to cover his ass for the bad press he got from 60 minutes. So I'd say maybe we could reserve judgment until after we see if the bill gets tossed or not.

Not that I really have much faith that the bill won't be watered down and full of loopholes, but the article doesn't sound as bad as the headline implies.

Once Rush and the rest of them get in front if this, it wont matter how the republicans acted, it will be the democrats fault.

I'm guessing they're going to go with a combination of "more regulations are bad" and '"it benefits democrats and punishes republicans" followed by. "Look what the democrats have done"

Someday schoolchildren will be taught about this era in the history of what was once known as the United States of America, and they won't be able to comprehend why people so viciously defended these elected leaders from the rightful scorn of the citizenry. They'll just say to themselves "I guess if these idiots hated the protest movement that much they got what they deserved" and then flip back to the section on ancient Greece to look at pictures of boobie-statues.

Or, we can look at which party overwhelmingly votes for evil, versus occasionally votes for evil. A Democrat sponsored this bill, while a Republican put a stop to it. That's been the general trend for the past few years. Sure, there are exceptions, but Republicans are the problem 9 times out of 10.

To be fair, PAYGO-esque legislation WAS passed in the last couple years, but the parties (mainly Republicans) have gone at each other (mainly Democrats) every once in a while for not following the budgetary rules passed with largely Democrat support. I've heard that democrats have since then pushed legislation that didn't follow the PAYGO rules, and I've heard retorts that the rules don't apply because of some exclusions in the PAYGO bill.

I'm sure that by now our politicians and their staff must have heard the ominous grumbling about wanting to forcibly eject them from the building and liquidate their assets. They might want to listen for a change.

Some people want their heads. If they can escape with their hides, I think they should consider themselves lucky. They've had it too good at our expense for too long. Blocking legislation to prevent or hinder them from robbing us is only going to make it worse. Do they want to be dragged from the halls of government? They're giving us plenty of reason to do it. I'd do it with a kick in the behind, and throw the box of things from their office into the gutter after them.

2011-12-08 01:21:38 PM
Cantor spokesman Brad Dayspring said. "Members on both sides of the aisle wanted more time to gather information and develop appropriate alternatives. Complicating matters is the fact that the legislation has been referred to five other committees. Therefore, the Chairman determined that in the interest of crafting the most effective response, the markup would be re-scheduled."

In other words they need time to complicate the bill with earmarks so it will end up accomplishing the opposite of the original intentions. Bravo.

Cantor is scum, Barney Frank is right behind him though.

Do you really want to take away a monetary incentive to become a congress person? If you do that you'll end up with a bunch of morons running this country. If you want the best and brightest, you need to keep this legal.

It will pass eventually. By the time it does, it will be so full of holes as to render it completely useless, but it will still pass to great fanfare. The problem will still remain, but the press and the public will be placated, the politicians will give themselves a big ol' pat on the back, and it will be back to business as usual.

What are you talking about? If they get any scrutiny over this they will get it through committee while adding amendments to privatize Medicare, extend the Bush tax cuts for those making over 250K, undo ACA, eliminate the EPA, and/or add a Constitutional amendment to balance the budget every year requiring a simple majority vote on any spending cuts but a super majority for tax increases.

They'll pass it and then blame the Senate for not agreeing to it (with Republicans threatening to filibuster if the language is altered.) Come on, this is SOP for any bill that has admirable goals and bipartisan support these days, since getting to spin dysfunction is so much better than fixing things.

No offence, guys, but the shriller the argument gets, the stronger the scent of blood in the water gets. You're all on the same side here: roughly in the same socioeconomic class in the same sprawling civilization, possessing the same rights and (mostly) similar dreams, ruled by the same people. Regardless of whether you think Congress or Wall Street is the bigger problem, ripping the people who should be your allies to shreds will only perpetuate the status quo.

The thrashing, drowning, bleeding-in-the-water status quo.

Just a thought.
