I'm behind in my celebrity death pool. I'm thinking of trading Charlie Sheen of Lindsay Lohan for Alec Baldwin. Sure, its a bold move, but I'll look genius when he's found dead of cirrhosis of the liver, lungs, kidneys, legs, arms....

Sorry,Alec, but you're in the wrong. Pre-flight instructions apply to everyone, and you failed to heed them. Simple as that. A little contriteness goes a long way.

He's right.

The pre-flight rules are not practical, justifiable, or necessary, especially when the plane isn't moving. The only ethical stance in that case is to disobey them; the most ethically repulsive stance is to side with the rules simply because they exist.

A. Because they say so.
B. Because if they do a sudden stop and you aren't wearing your seatbelt, you can put your face exactly into that reclined seat.

Seriously, how hard is it to follow a couple of simple rules to get from point A to point B? I'd rather have them shut down the overdone "security screening" than ignore the instructions while sitting in a large box full of people at 30,000 feet.

FTFY. You aren't forced to fly, and throwing a temper-tantrum to get your way while inconveniencing every other person on the flight is a dick move.

Again, picking a fight with flight crews is a lose-lose situation. Either you lose the argument and end up off the flight (and maybe in handcuffs) or you win the argument, but you're already off the flight because they have to maintain some schedule and you're taking too damn long arguing a stupid point.

Prediction: Baldwin will arrive at his next Letterman appearance on a Greyhound bus blowing kisses as they roll out a red carpet for him.

2011-12-08 12:59:49 PM
But there are many now who walk the aisles of an airplane with a whistle around their neck and a clipboard in their hands and they have made flying a Greyhound bus experience.

I get the feeling that taking the bus is beneath this fellow. And that he was harassed by his high school gym teacher.

If Baldwin wasn't such a self-important dick, this routine lack of basic courtesy from airlines would have gone unremarked yet again. We need more Alec Baldwins, not fewer, until the airlines get the message that their idiotic rules, gropings and petty tyranny over what is essentially a flying bus doesn't wash with consumers. Man up, people.

My father explained it to me this way. My plane, my rules. (or My Customs Hall, my rules...etc.)

I do not see how you can become a pansy by doing what you are told in certain instances. Now, if they said we all had to jump out of the back of the plane, then I'd question. But my god, I can stand to have my phone turned off during a flight. It just isn't important to me.

2011-12-08 01:24:05 PM
If you don't like an airline's service, DON'T FLY THEIR PLANES.

However, if you choose to fly a particular airline, just as if you allowed someone into your home, you abide by their rules.

People complain too much. Someone has spent their entire lives to build an airline company to fly people back and forth. Baldwin, you have pretended to be a fake person behind a camera. No one cares.

Why do we still have to turn electronics off/sleep mode without networking?

Because some aircraft systems are still picking up interference off them because when they were designed back in the 60s, 70s and 80s there weren't a lot of 2.4 to 5Ghz transmitters and none were going to be a few meters away.

Guess what, now on a flight there are hundreds to thousands of the things yammering away. And yes, on some B737s and 757s they've had interference for landing systems from 2.4 and 5Ghz radios, so the ban remains in place.

2011-12-08 01:30:32 PM
Flying is the worst one because people come back from flights and they tell you their story and it's like a horror story. It's, they act like their flight was like a cattle car in the 40's in Germany. That's how bad they make it sound.

They're like it was the worst day of my life. First of all we didn't board for 20 minutes and then we get on the plane and they made us sit there on the runway for 40 minutes. We had to sit there.

Oh really, what happened next? Did you fly through the air incredibly like a bird? Did you partake in the miracle of human flight, you non-contributing zero? Wow, you're flying! It's amazing!

Everybody on every plane should just constantly be going, oh my God, wow you're flying, you're, you're sitting in a chair in the sky but it doesn't go back a lot. And it smells.

You know, here's the thing. People like they say there's delays on flights delays really... New York to California in 5 hours. That used to take 30 years to do that and a bunch of you would die on the way there and have a baby. You'd be with a whole different group of people by the time you got there. Now you watch a movie you take a dump and you're home.

You are in a metal cylinder being hurtled across the word at 600mph, and it takes you 4-5 hours to get from the wast coast to the east coast. If you drove that, it would take you about three days, straight through.

These rules aren't violating your basic human rights. Nobody is taking away your right to vote, to free speech, to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

They are telling you to turn off your toy for 10-15 mins. Why? Who cares, its their damn plane, their damn rules (well, technically the FAA rules, but still).

If they are only doing it to cover their asses, then fine, whatever. Would it be nice that they just come out and say "Hey, we need you to turn off your electronic items just because we would rather be safe then sorry"? Yeah, it would, but they don't have to.

So sit down, shut up, and if it really bothers you that much, you can make your damn stand when you reach your destination.

Guys, he wasn't trying to use his phone in-flight. They were sitting at the gate. Did you guys read what he wrote? At all? Others were being allowed to use their phones while he was told to stop. I don't think he's making excuses for what happened, but he IS using the incident to call attention to a related issue, which is customer service from our airlines, which I agree is kind of crappy. It IS a miracle of science (thank you for the Louis CK quote, it always makes me smile), but that's not an excuse to treat your customers like total ass.

And also, if he was such a self-important blow-hard, then why did he apologize to the other passengers? Self-important blow-hards don't apologize to the people they affect with their shiatty behavior. He KNOWS he acted poorly. He KNOWS his crap behavior negatively affected others & he apologized for it. Besides, "don't do it in the first place" (sorry, still no time machine), what else can he do?

I totally get that (still a bad design, but understandable given the age of the planes). My question is why do I have to turn them off, rather than just put it in "Airplane mode"? You can do it in mid-flight without dropping the plane from the sky, so why not just make the rule that you have to have it in airplane mode once the doors closed? It's already pretty much the honor system anyway (raise your hand if you actually turn your smart phone off, rather than just put it on Airplane Mode the whole time).

Being a e-reader owner, I really hate that 15 to 20 minute spate between closing the doors and getting to cruising altitude. I'm left with nothing to read other than the shiatty inflight magazine.

I have no problem with the rules regarding electronics. People get upset about stupid stuff.

But...it really is ridiculous how little leg-room standard "coach" seats have (and from what I've seen, even "first class" seats aren't all that great). Reduce the passenger capacity by 30 people, and give everyone else another 4 or 5 inches. Raise my ticket price by $25 bucks. Everyone will be happier.

Also this.

But instead, they do take a few rows out and create "Economy Plus" or whatever name Carrier XYZ has for it. Then they charge like $100 more for it.

But I'll tell you what, I still pay for it on longer flights, so I guess they have the market pegged on that. What I don't get is how United can justify charging $80 each way on a flight from Indianapolis to Seattle, but Singapore Air charges $50 per flight, on a flight from LA to Singapore (one that is like 5 times as long). I farking hate US domestic carriers. They are truly terrible, generally without exception (Southwest and Frontier are ok, I guess).
