I like how Hoboken is labeled Hipster. I moved from Williamsburg, Brooklyn to Hoboken this past year. Hoboken is not Hipster. There are a few in Jersey City though.

A more accurate representation would have Hoboken as Yuppies. There are definitely some hipster enclaves in downtown Jersey City.

Seaside Heights to Barnegat. I'm pretty sure, in actuality, that goes up pretty much the entire barrier islands.

I don't live in a mansion and I don't drive a Benz.

After looking at this, whoever put this together has no idea. There are Italians and wife beaters in more than just that small sliver of the state.

pineys are basically new jersey hicks. not many of them actually live in the pine barrens. there are tons in Tabernacle. visit some of the flop house/bars on the side of rt 72 to 70 and you'll see some pineys. they hang durrs outside during huntin' season to bleed dry.

Thanks, I guess. That's not very special, off to the wiki link to see if that is more humorously descriptive.

Grew up in Drunk Rutgers Students, moved south to Pineys... Pineys Everywhere.

Most people don't believe me that Confederate-flag-waving, lifted-truck-driving, deer-hunting Rednecks exist, en masse, in Jersey...

Raised in Happy White Families, living in Middle Class Raritan Valley Line Commuters. As far as I can tell the map is broadly accurate.

A piney is someone living in the vast expanse of nothing known as the Pine Barrens. I don't know how one lives in the Pine Barrens, cause you don't see much besides sand and trees there. I guess someone has to support the large industry of people driving from South Jersey and Philly to the Shore who need to stop for a bathroom.

2011-12-08 10:38:52 AM
My wife, a Jersey native, sent this to me yesterday. From what I know of her friends and the area she grew up, this is really quite accurate. She's Polish and grew up in "Russians, Pollacks, and Toxic Fumes" right at the tip of "Old People and Asians." The first time I met her friends, we went to go see one guy who was in a demolition derby up in "Redneck and Hippies." And, well, I've driven through Camden on the way to Philly.

Should have added another Swamp people section for the meadowlands.

I'm somewhere in the triumvirate of Christie County, Poor Minority, and Hipster.

This. I just moved smack dab in the middle of friendly white families, but I used to live on the border of poor minorities.

Grew up in Springsteen country, now live in Hipsters area. Like another poster said, not so much hipsters as much as "Yuppies who think they're New Yorkers" but it's close enough so I'll give him a pass.

Apparently you haven't visited much beyond the bars on a weekend. The people that actually live in Hoboken tend to be 30 somethings with families. Yuppies.

========

Whoever made this lives in Jersey, or knows Jersey really well, because it's probably more accurate than the Census.

As for Hoboken, it was hipster back around 1986, but the hipsters have long since decamped. Today Hoboken is not Yuppie, it's a half-way-house for recent college grads. Last spring's college grads get entry level jobs in NYC and a place in Hoboken living with 2-3 roommates. They then proceed to live pretty much like they lived in college but instead of going to class they go off to their Manhattan cubicle monkey jobs. After 3-5 years most get real jobs, or get married and move out. The remainders last 1-2 years more until the younger people in their building start referring to them as "fossils". Then they move out as well, and the next crop of recent college grads moves in. Repeat process.

my wife is from Manahawkin and it has become the next Staten Island. so many retired NYPD and NYFD types. we lived in Neptune City and i worked all over NJ. that map is pretty damn spot on.

loved driving up Route 18 and going from the shore thru farm country to the urban landscape in 30 minutes.

Do I send this to my friend from the corner of Piney and Ghetto... or do I avoid getting slapped the next time I see her. Decisions, decisions.

"Italian guys in wife beaters" isn't bad in the off season when there are no humans around. I went to Island Beach State Park in early spring when it was mostly sand and birds.

2011-12-08 10:47:05 AM
Pretty accurate, but agreed hoboken isn't hipsterish. Hell, its barely yuppie anymore.
