"She absolutely could have applied again," Goodman said.

"The children went barefoot to accompany her. They went four times, and four times she was denied. She was desperate, because she had nothing to feed her children,"

Ah, caring Texans.

But at midnight -- shortly after Grimmer hung up on police -- three shots were fired, causing the police to storm the building.

Rachelle Grimmer was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ramie and her brother, Timothy, 10, suffered critical head wounds and were transported to University Hospital in San Antonio, according to the San Antonio Express.

Very confusing situation.

Kid has a phone, mom has a gun, but no money for food. Two very hock-able items that would pay for many stuffings at a buffet. I'm not saying they shouldn't own these things, but if the kids are hungry, some decisions need to be made.

Plus it sounds like she probably qualified for assistance, and just muffed the paperwork.

Moved from Ohio where she had been denied, to TX where she failed to provide documentation. Perhaps the income paying for her child's smartphone was hard to conceal? RIF= Reading is fundemental

And this, people, is why we always double-tap. How long must the video game industry struggle before their message finally reaches the public?

Kids - well, people in general - are odd. So she goes from acknowledging her own mortality and the fact that her time on this earth could be up, to complaining that she's "bored" a couple of hours later?

A phone with a data plan, unless the kid was posting from a computer. Which, as you already noted, is something you can sell for food. I think maybe this MOTY had some skewed priorities.

Also, she really should have applied again, she just didn't submit the right paperwork the first time.

Stephanie Goodman, a spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Health and Human Services, told ABCNews.com that Grimmer hadn't been rejected. She had just received a notice that her case was closed, since she did not provide all of the necessary documentation during the department's 30-day time frame.

"She absolutely could have applied again," Goodman said.

I wonder why the grandparents never stepped in to try to head this off. If not financially, who knows what their condition is, but by contacting CPS. They had to know that the kids weren't being cared for properly.

Actually, scratch all that, after reading a more detailed account (new window) of the standoff, the girl could have been posting from one of the office computers.

Mom had a history of mental illness. I think it's the illness, not the priorities, that were an issue.

This peripatetic woman dragged those children from state to state applying for food stamps. Why? If you can't get them in Ohio, you sure as hell won't qualify in Texas.

jaybeezey: I wonder why the grandparents never stepped in to try to head this off. If not financially, who knows what their condition is, but by contacting CPS. They had to know that the kids weren't being cared for properly.

Some people distrust CPS so much they would rather take their chances by keeping custody of the kids in the family. They call CPS "baby snatchers" and stuff. We have some trolls like that lurking around in threads like this. Plus, if mom was off her meds, it's possible the kids only got this bad recently and grandparents weren't aware of it.

Not true. Different states and counties have different criteria for being eligible (different income/asset limits, etc)
