I didn't know that the US had already allowed it. Are any women actually servicing serving on submarines yet?

I believe that there are female officers on submarines now.

The Royal Navy - it's nothing but rum, sodomy and the lash.

I figured that would be how it went down. Not enough space on the enlisted side of things to have separate heads and bunking areas. At least on the attack boats.

Women are typically smaller than men and need less food and water. Given space constraints on submarines and potentially long durations between restocking it makes sense to have largely female crews.

They have reported aboard a few BNs and GNs.

The '88 and Seawolf classes weren't designed for it, so it won't happen there. The VA class is flexibly designed, plus most of them are not yet built so we should see women serving on them once a talent pool is built in the boomer fleet. We pretty much tied Britain's hands by allowing women on subs; they're late to the party and trying to beat us by putting them on SSNs (Astute) before we do.

Good luck with that, ladies. Submarining is a hard f*cking life, even without any actual hard f*cking. However, I guarantee you that any of the female JOs in this inaugural class of female dolphin-seekers that stay in the Navy will not just make command but make full-bird Captain. Look how well that turned out for USS Cowpens.

Yeah but can you image the results of a fully female crew being in constricting quarters for long stretches of time. Take a burlap sack, fill it with cats, drop it in a pond. The results would be similar.

Less than you'd think. There is nearly nowhere to get privacy for more than 30 seconds (plenty for some, I know). Oxygen levels are always low which reduces all manner of good feelings. Sleep is at an extreme premium. Submariners in general are smarter and more career-minded, and the women they've picked are head-of-the-class types... less likely to be sluts on both sides of the equation and thus more likely to be deterred by the law specifically against it.

There will be a lot less than on skimmer boats; not "none" but a lot less.

In addition, women who spend a lot of time together eventually sync their cycles. So if you get inexplicably torpedoed on your next deep sea fishing/drinking expedition, you'll know why.

Thoguh: Counterpoint: Have you ever seen, or had to hear about from a girlfriend/wife, an all female work environment? It's not something we would even wish on our enemies.

My wife used to work at a domestic violence shelter... needless to say the staff was exclusively women. It got pretty dicey at times, despite the general education level (all had degress, most had masters) and charitable intent. The crazy-ass clients didn't help. Some of them were even sexist towards male volunteers (like me) no matter how often I was there nor how much good I did.

God bless 'em for trying, though. Thankless profession.

Gergesa: Suddenly the red october comment made me laugh in a darker way.

We sometimes refer to it as "Nobody puts Master Chief in a corner!" Yes, Master Chief is an actual rank in the Navy... the highest available for enlistedmen and typically not to be f*cked with.

I hope they pay those guys well.

My old man before retiring managed to achieve this rank (pay grade E7, I believe?). When my mother was in labor with me, she called the naval base to get the old man. The guy she was talking to kept saying, "Well, I don't know. He hasn't been getting a lot of sleep lately, are you sure about this?".

My mother was frustrated at the time, but I agree with the guy. Don't wake the farkin' Chief unless you got a damn good reason.

nervoust: It's Officers only so they will have their own quarters while ordering the enlisted crewmen around.

On the Cold War era designs though only a few senior officers got their own room though. The rest of the officers just got semi private space which was a step up from what the enlisted folks got. So unless everyone gets a private room on the VAs, you're still going to need to be assigning the women in at least pairs.

It seems like you're getting into the area of diminishing returns. Women are a minority in the fleet and an even small subsection of that minority will volunteer for sub duty. Then you need to them to qualify and assign them to the fleet in at least pairs likely. Seems like a big pain for personnel.

Hey, so Graf had some faults, but she wasn't exactly Ilse Koch.
