He IS right. Just TELL people you don't need any REAL musicians in your band because you sing to a SOUNDTRACK (probably through autotune - though I don't think Madonna used it).

I like to watch people actually perform their musical creations and get upset when any performer uses pre-recorded oversanitized crap to make the audience think there's actually talent in the band (or in many cases the performer).

/no special love for GS or KISS, but the man has a valid point.

Singing was around long before bands. When there is a singer, music is an accompaniment, not the focus.

Yeah! Take that, Madonna... 'Cuz if there's one person renowned for their scintillating vocal abilities, it's Gene Simmons.

Perhaps you missed my remark about autotune. This is the tools today's singers hide behind.

IMO during a performance, a HUMAN BEING should actually PERFORM or it's not really a performance.

I love that guy, but man, don't go wonky on Madonna. There's no need for that.

I'm trying really hard to not go on my rant about how people don't really understand that the "auto-tune" sound these days is actually a purposeful styling that's en vogue in a certain genre and that if the performers/engineers were actually using auto-tune (either live or in the studio) to the standard spec and purpose, the whiners about auto-tune wouldn't even know it was being used.

/well, they do use it to the standard spec and purpose, everyone does, but you know what I mean

I can understand using a plethora of "tools" to enhance musical recording or even a performance. The problem is that the so called "tool" is NOT being used that way. It's used in live performances not just to style, but to compensate for the lack of talent. THIS is the problem and the tool does not overcome it.

Here's the thing about auto-tune. When its in use, you can't tell its being used.

What you think is "obviously autotuned" is either 1) intentional styling or 2) not actually auto-tuned vocals

/or 3) you being butthurt about pop music
//"so called 'tool' "? there's no so-called about it, it's a tool like all other production tools

Of course, no one uses autotune to make up for the lack of talent and does it poorly, right? And everyone who does use autotune at all would never use it to cover their lack of talent.

Let me put it to you this way, I KNOW that the artists I listen to are NOT using autotune. How can I tell? I go see them actually do it live. It's easy to do most anything in the studio and cover it up. It's not easy to bring studio work live without using prefabbed crap. The bands and performers who have any integrity at all are easy to identify in a live setting. They almost never do everything exactly the same. Real singers get tired sometimes and have to improvise to compensate.
Slight variations in tone, tembre, pitch are easily apparent. This is called watching the performer actually perform.

The autotune users never really look like work very hard to sing. That's because they don't have to.

You realize that rack mount live auto-tune modules are in common usage, right?

The rest of your post makes me think you should go hang out with bunner and you guys can jerk each other off about your musical states and how "pure" the music you listen to is compared to new fangled stuff.

Uh huh. Face it Autotune is not as "invisible" as you think it is. I am a musician and have been around bands that use it and bands that don't. For some strange reason the good musicians don't seem to need it. That doesn't mean they don't use it for styling. It means they don't need it to get through a performance.

Funny thing about good singers.... They generally have to work HARD to achieve the pitch, hold it and express the emotion. Bad singers are so blatently slack, it's easy to see them sing off pitch. Autotune will not correct that.

I wanna rock and roll all nite and party every day

You keep on saying you'll be mine for a while

Maybe if they got the real Ace and Peter instead of a scab in Ace Make-up and poor Eric Singer with a bad dyejob.

...okay, Singer is probably the better drummer. But scab Ace sucks.

They played the pregame Super Bowl show at Super Bowl XXXIII (Broncos 34, Falcons 19 -- suck it Georgia). They would be a pretty awesome halftime show.

Singer is an infinitely better drummer than Peter Criss. So was Eric Carr, for that matter. But "scab Ace", as you refer to Tommy Thayer, is an excellent guitarist. Thayer, in fact, helped Ace re-learn all of the songs before the 1996 Reunion Tour.

Y'know, if they hadn't put Singer and Thayer in the Criss and Ace make-up, I'd have no problem, But, if given a choice, I'd take the slightly lesser originals over new scabs.

And, yeah, that whole situation is the fault of $tanley and $immons.

That part I'll give you. There's really no reason they couldn't give Singer and Thayer new make-up designs. That's what they did with Eric Carr and Vinnie Vincent back in the day. They aren't fooling anyone and no one paying to see KISS these days would care if half the band wore new designs since they're there to see $immons and Stanley (Paul is not half the prick businessman Gene is - Paul is an artist more than anything else these days.

"Stand up, you don't have to be afraid
Get down, love is like a hurricane

I don't have a problem with either of them. Making money using merchandise when you have a popular band? We should all have such problems.
