WAR is a band that is way better than any shait rock and roll group.
Don't kids yourselves.

There's not one bit of shine having your name in the RnR HOF.

War is and always will be a superior musical group than the diaper clad upstarts known as the beasty boys.

For starters, they are accomplished musicians, while the beasty boys are a bunch of noise makers.
For those of you out there who don't know who War is, GET OFF MY LAWN.

Yeah, except the Beastie Boyz actually did something groundbreaking- they paved the way for the melding of rap and rock while also making rap safe for white people and WAR was just another afro-inflected funk band. Admittedly, they are an amazing afro-inflected funk band but it's not like they brought anything new to the table.

/can't stand the Beastie Boyz but can recognize an influence when I sees it

They should be in simply for managing to rhyme CIA and Mafia.

"The Best of WAR and more" is farking torture. When I worked at the record store the boss would play that over and over for days on end.

It's called the Hall of Fame for a reason. My 70 year old father knows who the Beastie Boys are. I'd say maybe 1 in 20 people know who War is, athough they could identify some of their songs.

I just wish that Rush would get inducted so I could check out a Rush exhibit at the RNRHOF

Heh... My mom was a huge WAR fan. I grew up listening to their music. I particularly love the stuff they did with Eric Burdon.

I'll take them over any of their contemporaries for the most part...

But really, why give a shiat about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame?

Good God, y'all.

My brother used to date Lee Osker's ex-wife. Truly a wonderful and incredible woman. One day while I was visiting my brother and her, she sang to me the entire day long.

She died in 1999. She's one of the people I miss the most.

War? What are they good for? Absolutely nothin

I read that as GWAR. Now that would have been entertaining.

skammie: I just wish that Rush would get inducted so I could check out a Rush exhibit at the RNRHOF

Rush could be hanging out and offering to let me re-record "Limelight" with them in the Hall of Fame, and I wouldn't do it. I hate Jann Werner and the whole RRHOF that much.

\Rush is easily the band I've seen live the most times
\\mostly because I never saw my favorite band live, which has been dead for twenty years and two weeks now, despite them trying to carry on

They're responsible for the song "Low Rider"? Fark 'em.

The best WAR song I've ever heard was a cover of Cisco Kid by Beau Jocque and the Zydeco Hi Rollers. WAR is overproduced crap by comparison.

I am now, and have been for several years, of two minds on the RnR HOF.

First, I'm confused and angry as to the why of not including Rush, Yes, or KISS.

Second, I realize the RnR HOF is just another opportunity for celebrities to celebrate how celebratory they are, so fark 'em. It's a joke.

War did create the highest song ever made. I'm not sure if this shows the positive or negative effect of weed.

I'm probably older than you, youngster. War wasn't nearly as famous as Beastie Boys at their peak, nor did they have their staying power.

It's a Hall of Fame, not a Hall of Talent.

Beastie Boys - hip hop pioneers.

War - a funk band.

War = Black Sheep, DAS EFX, etc.

I'm surprised that New Kids on the Block got snubbed this year. (They're debut album was 1986 self titled, followed by their first hit Hangin' Tough in 1988).

Also, GWAR is eligible in a couple years.

The difference between Run DMC and the BB is that Run took an existing song and more or less covered it. The Beastie Boys took Led Zepplin, War, and other greats and sang rap over it without much change, also they did something unheard of in the hip hop /rap genre....... they played these songs on these things called musical instruments: guitars and what not.

I love WAR... but as far as HOF I'll have to say the Beastie Boyz have been more influential in general. Also,.... Beastie Boyz are still making new albums that still sell.... which somehow seems to work better for the HOF people.

I'd attribute that to Rick Rubin more than the band. Their tastes and skills proved to be much more varied once they had enough success to go their own way.

Actually... they have more Rock albums than Rap... people seem to think everything after License to Ill is rap.... but everything before and a lot of what came after that album is really Rock way more than rap.

Not this.

The Beastie Boys also added some punk into the mix. "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)" is the single where everyone started paying attention to rock/rap fusion.

and they don't even know it's WAR performing them...

Oh and BTW vudu, your limited knowledge of the Beastie Boys is showing. They actually are great musicians as well, check out The In Sound From Way Out or The Mix-Up for examples.

On top of that it's not like it was either or, you do know there was several inducties and not everybody wins there...right?

This. Although white boys opening for an act like RUN-DMC merited a "WTF?!" from the crowd at first. By the end, the crowd were cheering for them.

That's how good the Beasties were. So even though the RRHoF is 10 lbs of crap in a 5 lb bag, they deserve it nonetheless.

That would be both, actually:

"I met the Beastie Boys in Rick Rubin's dorm room at NYU. What bugged me out about the Beasties was that they knew everything about hip-hop - the Cold Crush Brothers, the Treacherous Three and Afrika Bambaataa, all the old-school shiat. In addition, they could rap, they could sing and they could play instuments.
Run-DMC gave 'Slow and Low' to the Beastie Boys. The song was basically their blueprint. But then they started writing their own rhymes, and when Licensed to Ill came out, it went to Number One. They were writing songs we wished we had written, like 'No Sleep Till Brooklyn'. They put rock with rap like we did, but it made so much sense when they did it because they were punk rockers.
The first time we toured with the Beastie Boys was the Raising Hell tour in 1986: Run-DMC, Whodini, LL Cool J and the Beastie Boys. We were playing the Deep South - Crunkville, before there was crunk - and it was just black people at those shows. The first night was somewhere in Georgia, and we were thinking, 'I hope people don't leave when they see them.' But the crowd loved them, because they weren't trying to be black rappers. They rapped about shiat they knew about: skateboarding, going to White Castle, angel dust and television. Real recognizes real."

I wonder how much the fact that one of the Beatie's earliest hits had a sample from WAR played into their butthurt?

Beasties used the only good thing to come from War, a hook.

I think the Rock Hall means more to the artists than it does to fans, because it signifies respect by your peers and recognizes that you managed to carve out your place in music history, and of course the honor to think your old handwritten lyrics and stage outfits deserve to sit inside a museum next to relics from legends like The Beatles.

Having said that, you can spend a pretty damn entertaining day touring the place. I think for the most part they've chosen the right groups over the years with some notable exceptions, but the longer the place stays open the more diluted the prestige is getting. They don't need to induct so many groups a year. And they are moving into an era where the number of artists deserving of a place in the Hall is going to start thinning out big time. In the next few years I see some big names like The Pixies, Nirvana, Green Day, and Pearl Jam getting in as they become eligible, and then hopefully some of the artists that have been snubbed finally getting the nod.

:( So no one of note was influenced by the beastie boys?

War were super stars though so I have no idea how anyone could say there were not famous.
