And that's sulfur hexafluoride, which is very dense, but relatively inert. Sodium hexafluoride doesn't exist.

Well, if they lied about helium and this stuff, maybe they lied about paint fumes too.

Do we have to give up 'tranny'? I'm happy to be politically correct, but I've got a strict 2 syllable limit. It's not like it's got a huge past to it, like some others. We can save it and re-purpose it.

It's denser than any of the component molecules of air, which means they actually need to physically turn upside down in order to not accumulate farking sulfur in their lungs. I'm sure they smoke anyway, no damage done. It's not like anyone would care if they died.

Until that time, all bets are off.

Men for the same reason their voice continued to be altered in several breaths, the turbulence of normal breating will void the gas in a few breaths. If they were just breathing that with no O2 mixed in for more than 30-60 seconds then they would have passed out. This is why party balloon tanks of He have O2 mixed in to prevent stupidity at parties.

Lighten up Hexafluoride.

See, when I hear "tranny", I think transvestite, not transgender. And given the context, I'm pretty sure that's what NPH meant as well. Most queens don't mind being called trannies, but when using it towards transgendered folk, then ya, it's not cool.

Why is it not cool? It's just a shortened form of a word and why is it okay to shorten it for transvestite but not transgender?

"Tranny" is like the N-word.
WE can use it to refer to ourselves. But people outside our group can't use it.
When other people use it, it's generally derogatory and malicious. When we use it, it's just short for 'transgendered'.

Wrong:

Evidence:
Link (new window)
"Truly sorry for saying the word 'tranny' on Live this week. Twice!" Harris wrote on his Twitter account. "Should have been more thoughtful. Didn't at all mean to offend."

Reaction:
The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation lauded Harris's mea culpa, noting, "It's heartening to see a celebrity of Harris' stature recognize and apologize for using the slur in such a timely manner, and for greater media attention being paid to its use. Many people do not realize that the word "tr*nny" is one of the most hurtful and dehumanizing slurs that transgender people hear. Most transgender people associate that word with personal experiences of violence, hatred and derision."

My best friend for awhile, and a FTM individual who was my gym coach, and could kick my ass no problem, never seemed to have a problem with language of any sort. But I never called him a tranny either. However, he told me he preferred the acronym GBLT to GLBT because it was so much funnier and on point.

That said, I think the reaction to NPH is strangely off topic. I feel, with no evidence, they are more upset that NPH was referencing Buffalo Bill as a transgendered serial killer and with his remark somehow giving the impression most transexuals are psychotic, and possibly killers. But they don't mention that at all.

But if anything about what NPH said was even vaguely wrong, that was it.

I like NPH, but if both he and Ripa had ended up in the ER from taking too many hits of SF6 during a daytime talk show, well, that would've been kind of funny.

I didn't even know "tranny" was a "bad" word.

I'm bisexual, am I allowed to use it?

I will say though, I would be hard pressed to go hang out in New Orleans as a white chick and be fine saying "n*gger" (don't know if the mods will take this down for that word, so censored it), so all you people out there saying, "OH WHATEVER, IT'S JUST A WORD"....are you white people? Would you be hard pressed to go around calling black people n*ggers? Just curious.

Well, the n-word has a longer history of being a negative derogatory word. Its use by the targeted group itself is puzzling and a double-standard.

I live in SF and the trannys (short for transvestites) at Trannyshack ^ don't have a problem with the word. This is what NPH was alliterating to in his comment -- a deep mail voice of someone who's a transvestite/drag artist. It's been in use for a long time.

As for transexuals, they need to find another term to be sanctimonious about. I've heard them refer to themselves as "trans" not "tranny". I've met some trans people and they're just regular people who needed to complete the physical transformation their brains started in the womb. My reaction is "oh, that's cool -- you seem at home with the end-product...another beer?"

Then there is a subset of trans people who are going through the process to AW and are just looking to out-do extreme body modifiers/tatts/piercings and are in my opinion shallow and insufferable.

Hate to be the one that tells you, but any word used in a derogatory manner will become foweled by the meaning. Take the word retarded, and then special then differently abled. You'll probably greatly offend anybody you call the first two, and I don't give it long before differently abled is horridly offensive as well.
Changing the term you want to hear doesn't do anything except make more taboo words.

If you don't want to be called names ever, don't be different.
Otherwise you'll just have to live with it, just like everybody else.

2011-12-09 09:06:30 AM
I think the constant drumbeat of language policing is farking differently abled.

2011-12-10 12:29:12 AM
Mr. Cat Poop: Why is it not cool? It's just a shortened form of a word and why is it okay to shorten it for transvestite but not transgender?

Because one is a subculture that has claimed ownership of the word. While using it to describe someone who is transgendered it's derogatory. A dude dressing up like a woman to perform on stage is much different that being born with a brain wired for one gender, and having the body of another.

One is a choice, the other isn't.

Oh and not all transvestites are gay, nor are all transgendered people. Sexual preference is in a whole other ballpark than gender identity.
