(MSNBC) Followup Principal forced out over 9-year-old's sexual harassment suspension:"One mistake in 44 years, and I'm not given the benefit of the doubt. I really don't believe I was treated fairly." Zero tolerance is a biatch   (usnews.msnbc.msn.com) divider line 201

"I really don't believe I was treated fairly."

Yeah, but suspending a 9-year-old for saying he thinks his teacher is cute is totally reasonable, right? Shaddup.

He's only made one mistake in 44 years? Wow! That guy is amazing and should run for president!

That's okay, he'll come back next year at full salary while still collecting his retirement.

I'm sick of schools trying to dictate everything children do. It was free speech. The kid didn't grab the teachers ass, or anything. If anything it should've been taken as a compliment. School administration people are really soft these days. Not letting kids win, or feel bad for losing. Sometimes even punishing those who succeed. Schools suck, and the system is so backward it's even worse than it ever was before.

ZAZ: I assume he's retiring to collect a pension worth 80% of his pay.

To be fair:

- I'm not sure about his state, but in mine it's 70%, not 80.
- that pension is instead of, not in addition to, SS benefits that virtually all other professions get to tap into.
- Retirement is usually available after 35 years.... If he's still there after 44, he must love what he does, because he could get 70% of that pay and stay home.

This is the problem when we try to legislate bugbears or taboos. Sex seems to be a little too much for our squeamish society to handle right now, as well as just about anything carnal. Common sense and a sense of proportion must go out the window when we try to rationalize the irrational.

2011-12-07 08:48:04 PM
Maybe we're finally seeing the first crack in the wall of asinine stupidity that is school policy these days. Probably not, but maybe.

Next we need to go after that mom who named her kid "MNA"

That was not a mistake. A mistake is when you stub your toe. That was a complete lack of judgement and probably just the one where he was caught.

Where are his defenders?

Was it the teacher who brought the complaint of sexual harassment to the principle? What consequences would he have faced for not acting on it? I'm assuming he had to do something after the complaint.

He probably should have just called the parents and talked to them about the situation.

Was the decision worth losing a career over? Must be nice to never have made a mistake in your career.... I envy all of you.

The reality is that folks can berate this principal (and the decision seems pretty boneheaded), but administrators are stuck between entitled parents / kids and laws that punish us if we don't respond strongly to misbehaviors. So many of us feel that we're damned if we're too soft or too hard in our decisions.

As I said above, it's a terrific job, but don't judge till you've walked a mile, yadda yadda.

I can think of half a dozen ways this could have been handled without suspending the kid.

Of course, they would have involved actually bringing in the kid, the teacher and "Chiquita" and talking to them like rational people; but still, it could have been done.

I believe you. I think the problem for many principals is the first part of your second sentence. They don't have it. In this case, a sexual harassment accusation for a child saying his teacher is 'cute' was just asinine. And as the headline says, zero-tolerance payback sure is a biatch, and if they didn't see this coming because of their past overreaching then they are still sadly deluded in their thinking that zero-tolerance works.

Of course.

If the story is actually accurate, you're completely right. The problem is that the school is in no real position to clarify any inaccuracies in the story (due to student privacy) while the family can allege anything. The kid may have said much more inappropriate things that the paper left out.

Still, even if they story is accurate, losing a job over a decision that is easily reversible seems a bit much.
