Are you saying those people hanging from a wire several feet over the lava would get warm?

If you ever drop your keys into a river of molten lava, let 'em go, because man, they're gone.

I read the article without thinking about that scene... I was too busy remembering all the crappy movies like Dante's Peak and Volcano. But, I guess if you're willing to suspend belief to allow the guy's heart to be ripped out of his chest and not kill him, then we can overlook the physics of lava, too.

"The floor is lava! The floor is lava!"

"Well, THAT'S a shame. Because you can climb on the furniture all you want, and you're still dead as a doornail from attempting to breathe in such close proximity to superheated air."

"You're a buzzkill, Bob."

"Wrong. I'm a SCIENTIST. Big difference."

"Not really."

The Onion is prophetic: crappy movies like Dante's Peak and Volcano

If I'm hung over on a Sunday and there's a crappy disaster movie on SyFy, I'll usually watch it but the Lava Twins were just too terrible. Even worse than the Asteroid Twins, Armageddon and Deep Impact.

Just convince Snooki and company that molten lava is the new way to get a really good tan.

Win/win.

Yeah but the other two were released the same year. Just like the asteroid movies and the Mission to Mars movies. This year it's two Snow White movies.

Two things strike me:

1. Mt. Doom was a magic volcano, so whatever. [cue Simpsons Xena pic]

2. Revenge of the Sith is stunningly close to real life in this regard. If this means I can also find a way to choke someone with my thoughts, I'll totally forgive Lucas for Episodes I and II.

From the comments section in tfa, that might be possible. If the lava is flowing slowly enough that it's crusting over, the truck has a low enough density that it wouldn't sink. I'd imagine the fuel would ignite, though...

now, the scene where the grandma towed the boat in the acid lake...

Ask James May from "Top Gear". Captain Slow drove a truck onto crusted over lava at some volcano in Iceland. Hot bits were raining down from the active volcano, but he had a bit of old tin as a shield over the truck. He even set the tyres on fire.

I remember once hearing from a geology professor that if you were to fall from a great height onto molten lava, you'd break your neck before burning up.

Not that the latter wouldn't happen quickly afterward.

The Core was an awesome movie. It did something very, very important that the other two didn't: It knew it was a ridiculous comedy. It laughed it up and played it up, and pulled no punches. Going to the center of the Earth to restart the core with nuclear devices? Hacking the internet so no one finds out? Unlimited long distance for life on a cell phone?

I love that movie for just how stupidly awesome it is.

/Dante's Peak just makes me giggle because of how pants on head retarded it is
//Volcano just makes me groan, but it is fun to see the city burn

For some reason that was the one bit about "Lord of the Rings" that really bothered me. Lava is molten rock, people. Rocks are heavy. People are not rocks. They don't sink into molten rocks.

It did, by causing him to sink and melting him up with the Ring. Duh!

yep, the tires would certainly ignite after a while, but there is a lot of air in them acting as an insulator as well.
fuel igniting? nope.. heating up and going to a gaseous state faster? sure! why not? but gas tanks are designed to prevent spontaneous combustion of the liquid inside, and gasoline isn't really all that flammable until it atomized.. remember.. it is not the gas that is burning... it is the fumes ;)
Now.. you must ask yourself.. what type of gas tank is this? is this a metal tank? they haven't made those in a while.. then there are the more common ABS plastic tanks. They'll take a while to melt to the point where there would be a breach in the first place.

now.. the biggest issue with an IC engine is going to be lubrication and cooling. And the biggest issue I can personally see when trying to drive over lava is going to super heating the reserve oil in the pan and causing it to loose it's lubrication properties. Super heating the radiator and the cooling fluid there. Transfer case oil, and in case of a automatic, the ATF fluid. once you loose your tires, you are going to completely loose your traction and everything breaking down will be accelerated after that fact.

These aren't even ""journalists"". I wish I had had the idea years ago to create a website that summarized the "journalists".

Anyway, I'm still not going to buy the article 100% until I see this tried out on a test subject. Sure density does matter, but even if you throw a block of wood which is less dense than water into a lake, it can submerge. Sure it will rise to the surface again, but if you're talking about lava that is a few thousand degrees won't it burn up too?

Someone get Mythbusters on this.

Movies always show people getting unrealistically close to hot lava.

The radiant heat and gasses of a large flow would unbearable anywhere near it.

If you ever really fell in, the water in your body would flash into steam and you'd cause a phreatic explosion, you wouln't just stand there slowly sinking out of sight with a "oh what a world" expression on your face.

/Lava is also a hell of a lot heavier than people think. It crushes anything it moves over.
