Every day, it looks more and more like the EU is just Germany's third try at conquest of Europe. After two failed military attempts, it really does look like they are going for an economic victory.

Well, those all-white Scandanavian countries do ok...well, damn.

Anywhere that makes a decent car has their shiat together. You can see why the U.S. is worried.

Maybe Merkel should talk to Putin. They could come up with some sort of non-aggression pact or something.

Some say Nazism went over so well because of the average German's innate sense of proficiency and organization. A police sergeant might be describing a thoroughly burgled house as "first rate, an excellent job!".

Um, the Germans seem to think this is all about fiscal discipline, but they seem to be ignoring the fact that European banks are leveraged out to Alpha Centauri and something needs to be done about that tout de suite. Never mind the fact that you're never going to get Italians to behave like Germans...it just isn't in the cards.

I'm sure they'll be happy with the Sudetenland and not make any more requests.

But not by intent. Greece et. al. want to be bailed out but keep acting like, well, Greece. Germany's not going to sign up to subsidize that crap forever, nor should they.

I think it's unrealistic to expect the outlying nations to change, though. Better to cut out the cancer from the Eurozone now.

Umm there was a reason but not what you're thinking.

Hitler's three Reichs were the Roman Empire/Holy Roman Empire, the German Empire from about 1871 to 1918 and then Nazi Germany.

And honestly I really can't fault Germany for this whole thing. They're damned if they do and damned if they don't. If they're independent and use their own currency and market they will basically outwork everyone else in Europe breeding discontent and mistrust and leading to isolation and aggresiveness. If they work with everyone they still outwork everyone and are hated for holding the most cards.

What's the solution?

spentmiles: Looks like it's time for another round of Put Germany in its Place.

The difference this time is that Germany is being dragged in as an unwilling participant. Their house is mostly in order - they just want everyone else to follow the rules that they signed their name to (forgetting, of course, the times that she herself ignored them).

Recall that Germany loathes the idea of a common Euro bond. The interest on those bonds will most likely be higher than what Germany can get on her own. They'd like to keep their finances more separate.

But a Cultural Victory has such a better ending movie than a Domination win.

Only the Germans have the Iron will necessary to permanently end this crisis; a final solution if you will. When the other nations are ready to follow the leader of Germany a thousand year era of prosperity will begin.

I remember reading a while back in The Economist an article where a British author discussed how Europe loved being united under Rome and was always trying to rework a system (whether through economic or military means) to return to it. Wish I'd remembered more about the article.
