Why shouldn't Sandler make a sequel? Audiences keep going to see his movies, and Grown Ups in particular did well at the box office. Sandler has mouths to feed and he employs otherwise unemployable, washed up comedians. Chris Rock, David Spade, Kevin James, Rob Schneider and Tim Meadows would all be destitute and probably turning tricks for money if Sandler didn't keep placing them in his movies or movies produced by his company. The man is a job creator. He provides low quality, brainless entertainment and he keeps Chris Rock in movies that I can easily avoid. I salute him.

The guy makes millions of dollars finding ways to hang out with his friends in exotic locations, and often writes himself a hot costar to make out with.

His movies may suck, and you don't have to see them, but you have to admit that Sandler has a pretty awesome life. If anyone working today ever made some kind of deal with the devil, my money would be on him.

Sun Worshiping Dog Launcher: Chris Rock, David Spade, Kevin James, Rob Schneider and Tim Meadows would all be destitute and probably turning tricks for money if Sandler didn't keep placing them in his movies or movies produced by his company.

In the past 12 months, the multi-tasking comic produced and acted in multiple Hollywood films (Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, the upcoming Death at a Funeral), released a new HBO stand-up special (Kill the Messenger) and embarked on his very profitable "No Apologies" stand-up tour. He also snagged a new book contract. His TV show, Everyone Hates Chris, will begin a lucrative syndication deal in the fall.

Made $42 million in 2009.

The important part is that he does alot of things that I can avoid. Though I must admit, $42 million means he is not in the same league as Spade and Schneider. I had written Rock off as a failure. Apparently he's just good at doing things that don't involve being a major Hollywood actor. If you find out that David Spade is making $42 million a year, I don't want to know.

So Adam Sandler is a money whore?

Is he? You know that, do you? Interesting. It must be that summer you worked as a telephone receptionist for the Psychic Friends Network, because that is actually true. But do you know how much older he is than me? Is it a significant difference for the purposes of this discussion? Do you know that, Subby? Yeah, I didn't think so.

Your headline compels me to address the rest of what you said because it is equally stupid.

Adam Sandler does whatever movie he thinks will be fun for him to do. He can't be doing it for the money, as he already has more than a person could ever need. Tell me, what exactly is it that leads you to believe that he only took the bad movies for the money? What indicators do you have that convinced you that he didn't take Grown Ups just because it looked like fun to him to do? See, you don't know his motivations any more than you know how old I am.

Back to the issue at hand however, your original assumption that most everyone here has denigrated themselves by doing jobs which they didn't believe in just for money, the error on your part was to assume that just because you have done something, and just because the people around you may have done the same or similar things, that this means everyone else must be doing it as well. It is called a false generalization, and is one of the most common logical fallacies. The fact is, Chumley, you and all those people you see whoring themselves out for money just so that you can have that 4G iPhone and that $5000 home theater system (or whatever), are the life's blood of corporate greed, and there are many, many people out there in this world who refuse to be used as a sucker like that.

So if it is what makes you happy, slurp away for whatever money you think you want, for all that stuff you think you need. But don't think you are not a whore while you do it, and don't try to justify it by telling yourself that everyone is doing it because that is simply not the truth. Oh, and if you continue spewing out crap that you obviously don't know anything about, I will continue to tell you to STFU.

For the record, Sandler is less than 10 years older than I am, and I did spend over $25K on my home theater. But I never have done anything that I didn't believe in just for the money, and I know plenty of others (including people who work in the entertainment industry in Hollywood) who have not either.

2011-12-07 01:24:23 PM
What an interesting career arc Sandler has had. He played himself in "Funny People," acknowledged to the world that he knows his movies suck, and then went right back to making those kinds of movies. Nothing says, "Yep, but f*ck it, you'll buy it anyway," quite like that.

They present a pretty compelling case that his latest movies have essentially been scams to get gobs of studio money to pay all his friends huge paychecks to make the laziest cheapest movies they can while on their expensive vacations.

Which honestly, kind of makes me respect Sandler a little bit more knowing he's not criminally bad at making movies, he's just a smart criminal who makes movies.

Grown Ups certainly wasn't cinematic genius, but I rather enjoyed it. One thing I've noticed about Sandler's comedies is that they are growing more honest. His casts seem to be genuinely having a good time and nothing seems forced. There aren't a lot of fall-off-the-couch-laughing moments, but the humor is more believable because you can picture those cast members actually saying their lines in real life.

With the exception of Salma Hayek in Grown Ups, that is. Worst. Casting. Ever. But her hotness made up for it.

Kind of agree. Adam Sandler makes shiat, and he does it exceedingly well and the market gobbles it up and asks for a second helping. I understand reviewers telling people they're shiat movies. But sometimes they just go overboard. Reminds me of that Vonnegut quote that literary criticism where the reviewers start to go into full nerdrage is a bit like putting on a suit of plate mail to attack a banana fudge split.

Except I really don't think this is anything insightful or some new fresh take. Ever since Happy Gilmore made more money than God the studios and Sandler have always had a very symbiotic relationship. They give Sander a blank check and free reign to cast/hire whoever he wants, and he makes them truckloads of money. The very first movie Happy Madison Studios greenlighted was Deuce Bigalow in 1999, twelve years ago. They greenlighted Joe Dirt a couple of years later. Do you think any other studios were looking at Rob Schneider and David Spade as leading men material at the time?

Happy Madison gave us Grandma's Boy, which is one of my all-time favorite stoner comedies. Besides that it's been hit-n-miss, mostly on the miss side.

Good lord, someone commented above that Grown Ups was funnier than the Hangover. I liked Grown Ups, but the Hangover is on a whole different level of awesome in the comedy spectrum.
