Almaribe's son Mohammed said he feared for his father's well-being. "Five hundred slashes on his back, and he has back problems. I wouldn't think he'd survive 50," he told Australian Broadcasting Corp.

Hey kid - how about zero?

Don't worry, they won't give him all 500 at once. That would kill him. They'll give him 100, let him heal, and then give him 100 more, rinse, repeat. He has a year in prison to get them all in.

To be fair, the guy is a Muslim, which means he thinks that this is how everyone should be treated. I've nothing against using Sharia law on Muslims, so long as it doesn't get inflicted upon the rest of us.

What exactly did he do, though? If he was reading the Koran and praying with a group, why was he charged and not the rest of the group? Article could be a bit more... Detailed.

Beluga Heights: I'm so glad that Saudi America and the USA are bffs.

Just remember:
Commit human rights atrocities, but grow poppy plants because it's the only thing of worth your country can produce - bad, evil terrorists

Commit human rights atrocities, but export oil because it's the only thing of worth your country can produce - good, wholesome capitalists.

The existence of blasphemy laws is a sufficient, though not necessary, condition for establishing a nation as tyrannical and its leadership as irrational and of low intelligence.

I don't think your reading comprehension would have gotten the details anyway.

FTFA: Almaribe's son Jamal told The Age newspaper that his father was reading and praying as part of a group when he was arrested.

He could have taken his cock out and told Muhammad's Companions to suck it weeks, months earlier, during a night out with the lads, for example.

Anyway, who are Mo's Companions? And why and how were they specifically blasphemed?

I think punishment by rock throwing would be fairer. With a time limit. Make a game out of it.

I agree. If you're going to follow this version of a magic sky wizard and voluntarily go to a country where public beheadings for practicing sorcery still happen, why that's just complaining about getting the full-faith tour package for free instead of paying for it.

When you don't have real trials, or representation, evidence and clear charges are basically meaningless. He was guilty of looking guilty... that's plenty for the cultural enforcers over there.

The really sh*tty part is that Muslims worldwide are required to make the Hajj at least once, meaning they're required to go to the KSA and be exposed to this. Fundamentalist, Sharia law is not the norm in many Muslim countries.

Not surprised. Muslims flip if you even mention that Mohammed was a warmongering, slave-owning pedophile.

As for the whipping, its his own fault for joining that shiatty religion and travelling to that shiatty country. Don't want to be subjected to barbarism? Don't become a barbarian.

Good point. Sharia law is good enough for muslims to want to force it on the rest of the world, so it should be good enough for him.

bighairyguy: Did they ever say what the actual insult was?

Good question. I've always been confused about what you could say that would be offensive about Muhammad and his merry men because Islamic jurisprudence says just about every bad thing I could think of about them. If you're ever have to be in a sharia law governed region, play it safe and just don't say anything.

Yes. If there's anything that history teaches us, it's that massive religious groups are completely uniform in their beliefs. This is why there never any disagreements between Muslim groups, ever. It's also why all Muslim-majority countries look exactly the same.

I'd call you a troll, but these are apparently the actual beliefs of a good many people. So I'll call you a mongoloid instead.

You are religiously hanging on about the part of the story about him getting arrested at the prayer group, aren't you? I have lost faith in your reading comprehension, and your blind acceptance that it MUST have something to do with his blasphemy.

He's a Westerner, so he may have thought it permissible to discuss unpleasant aspects of Mohammed's life that are usually passed over in silence... such as marrying the little girl, torturing the rabbi, plundering the caravans, etc.

When you think about it, there's no better example of the world's insanity that a particularly successful bandit warlord who lived fourteen centuries ago and was subject to delusional visions is today referred to -- even by large numbers of unbelievers -- as the "Prophet" Mohammed, and that extraordinary measures are constantly being taken all around the world to safeguard this long-dead-asshole's reputation.

That's the thing. It can't be repeated verbatim lest the accuser too would be punished for blasphemy. The stenographer would have their hands cut off, the arrest report would be set on fire and the whole place would go up like a piece of cherry pie.

That would be a terrific reason for non-Muslim countries to offer "Apostate Services" to citizens who are afraid to officially quit the religion they were born into.
