I'll wager it's has more details than "tax cuts!"

... and if it had included the details, you would have called it too long and boring.

Simple solutions are rarely the best solution to complex problems.

Oh, come on. The Republican economic/jobs plan is way more detailed than just "tax cuts". They've also got "ban abortion" in there, and "no gay marriage", and "deregulate polluters", and there's at least one "repeal child labor laws" in there as well. They've got plenty of detail.

And by the way - if we don't have an economy built on bubbles and financial speculation, our best and brightest won't all gravitate towards careers in banking and finance. Because if we want an economy that's built to last, we need more of those young people in science and engineering. This country shouldn't be known for bad debt and phony profits. We should be known for creating and selling products all over the world that are stamped with three proud words: Made in America.

Obama is exactly right on this.

I agree. He really should have pulled out a Powerpoint presentation with lots of charts and projections. The audience would have loved it.

FTFA: Obama used the word "fair" or "fairness" a total of 15 times in advocating for an America where everyone gets an equal opportunity.

Do I really look like a guy with a plan? You know what I am? I'm a dog chasing cars. I wouldn't know what to do with one if I caught it. You know, I just... do things. The mob has plans, the cops have plans, Gordon's got plans. You know, they're schemers. Schemers trying to control their little worlds. I'm not a schemer. I try to show the schemers how pathetic their attempts to control things really are. So, when I say... Ah, come here. When I say that you and your girlfriend was nothing personal, you know that I'm telling the truth. It's the schemers that put you where you are. You were a schemer, you had plans, and look where that got you. I just did what I do best. I took your little plan and I turned it on itself. Look what I did to this city with a few drums of gas and a couple of bullets. Hmmm? You know... You know what I've noticed? Nobody panics when things go "according to plan." Even if the plan is horrifying! If, tomorrow, I tell the press that, like, a gang banger will get shot, or a truckload of soldiers will be blown up, nobody panics, because it's all "part of the plan". But when I say that one little old mayor will die, well then everyone loses their minds! Introduce a little anarchy. Upset the established order, and everything becomes chaos. I'm an agent of chaos. Oh, and you know the thing about chaos? It's fair!

"It was short on details" is shorthand for "It is hard to refute what he said and I got nothin' else"

I'm in agreement that we need our engineers and scientists researching and designing and building things, not trying to make money out of money. I think the rest will follow.

The government can't create jobs, only the free enterprise private sector can!

So, WHY HASN'T OBAMA CREATED ANY JOBS???

2011-12-07 11:12:06 AM
Obama should create "Opportunity Zones" where minimum wage laws, child labor laws, environmental regulations and zoning laws don't apply.

We could locate these zones in low income African American neighborhoods.

I don't know why anyone hasn't already thought of this, it would totally work.

Being "on your own" means freedom. Most Americans will choose freedom. That's better than having some corrupt government commissar dictating what's "fair" for everyone.

Which is why most Republicans support marriage rights and reproductive rights and legalizing drugs.

SUMMARY OF THE AMERICAN JOBS ACT

1. Tax Cuts to Help America's Small Businesses Hire and Grow

Cutting the payroll tax in half for 98 percent of businesses: The President's plan will cut in half the taxes paid by businesses on their first $5 million in payroll, targeting the benefit to the 98 percent of firms that have payroll below this threshold.
A complete payroll tax holiday for added workers or increased wages: The President's plan will completely eliminate payroll taxes for firms that increase their payroll by adding new workers or increasing the wages of their current worker (the benefit is capped at the first $50 million in payroll increases).
Extending 100% expensing into 2012: This continues an effective incentive for new investment.
Reforms and regulatory reductions to help entrepreneurs and small businesses access capital.

2. Putting Workers Back on the Job While Rebuilding and Modernizing America

A "Returning Heroes" hiring tax credit for veterans: This provides tax credits from $5,600 to $9,600 to encourage the hiring of unemployed veterans.
Preventing up to 280,000 teacher layoffs, while keeping cops and firefighters on the job.
Modernizing at least 35,000 public schools across the country, supporting new science labs, Internet-ready classrooms and renovations at schools across the country, in rural and urban areas.
Immediate investments in infrastructure and a bipartisan National Infrastructure Bank, modernizing our roads, rail, airports and waterways while putting hundreds of thousands of workers back on the job.
A New "Project Rebuild", which will put people to work rehabilitating homes, businesses and communities, leveraging private capital and scaling land banks and other public-private collaborations.
Expanding access to high-speed wireless as part of a plan for freeing up the nation's spectrum.
3. Pathways Back to Work for Americans Looking for Jobs.

The most innovative reform to the unemployment insurance program in 40 years: As part of an extension of unemployment insurance to prevent 5 million Americans looking for work from losing their benefits, the President's plan includes innovative work-based reforms to prevent layoffs and give states greater flexibility to use UI funds to best support job-seekers, including:
Work-Sharing: UI for workers whose employers choose work-sharing over layoffs.
A new "Bridge to Work" program: The plan builds on and improves innovative state programs where those displacedtake temporary, voluntary work or pursue on-the-job training.
Innovative entrepreneurship and wage insurance programs: States will also be empowered to implement wage insurance to help reemploy older workers and programs that make it easier for unemployed workers to start their own businesses.
A $4,000 tax credit to employers for hiring long-term unemployed workers.
Prohibiting employers from discriminating against unemployed workers when hiring.
Expanding job opportunities for low-income youth and adults through a fund for successful approaches for subsidized employment, innovative training programs and summer/year-round jobs for youth.
4. Tax Relief for Every American Worker and Family

Cutting payroll taxes in half for 160 million workers next year: The President's plan will expand the payroll tax cut passed last year to cut workers payroll taxes in half in 2012 - providing a $1,500 tax cut to the typical American family, without negatively impacting the Social Security Trust Fund.
Allowing more Americans to refinance their mortgages at today's near 4 percent interest rates, which can put more than $2,000 a year in a family's pocket.
5. Fully Paid for as Part of the President's Long-Term Deficit Reduction Plan.To ensure that the American Jobs Act is fully paid for, the President will call on the Joint Committee to come up with additional deficit reduction necessary to pay for the Act and still meet its deficit target. The President will, in the coming days, release a detailed plan that will show how we can do that while achieving the additional deficit reduction necessary to meet the President's broader goal of stabilizing our debt as a share of the economy.

He's merely managed to create more jobs in three years than all eight years of Bush.

Salvaged the domestic auto industry, saving a couple of hundred thousand manufacturing jobs in a region that's already suffering.

Signed off on payroll tax cuts, plus an extension of the Bush tax cuts, which according to conservative logic should be big job creators.

Had his policies embraced by Wall Street in the form of big rises in the major stock indexes - again, in the world of conservatives this is generally proof of an economy improving.

Took an economy that was shrinking and turned it around in to one that was growing.

Pushed through a stimulus plan that economists broadly agree saves millions of jobs.

Sent up a comprehensive jobs bill to Capitol Hill, which the Republicans largely refuse to even debate (very small exception for the federal contractor tax cut).

But darn it, we're not seeing enough details! We want details! Stuff the Republicans can refuse to do!
