Nice work, if you can get it.

FTA: What did you do when you were 15?

Babysat the neighbour's kids for $5 an hour.

But did this girl get to take 2 popsicles from the freezer? I think not.

I stand by my choices.

Is this worse than the actress who did the voice of Snow White earning a few hundred dollars, and not getting any pay for re-releases, and VCR/DVD/BluRay versions?

I think not. If a person of talent is hired for a project that will earn the owner millions, that person should not be paid peanuts.

Same for pro athletes. People are paying to see them. The owner should cut them in.

i paid a famous hollywood actor $60k for about 4 hours of VO work ten years ago. he was amazingly great, super nice, and a hard worker. plus he donated his fee to his local church. hell, i paid will lyman (frontline, BMW, etc.) $15k for 20 minutes of work once. not because that was his hourly rate - because it was a flat fee and he's just that good.

in this case, submitter, you're not paying an hourly fee, you're paying a flat fee for name talent. it's how the world works.

So, the take-away from this article is that we're supposed to be angry that this girl had a payday from a well-negotiated contract?

I was reading about the Russian version of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" -- the Russian contestants don't trust the "ask the audience" option because the audience usually wants the contestant to fail. TMZ articles often feature this attitude.

Never understood why some Hollywood actor is paid $60k for the v/o when someone like Billy West is available for less and is a REAL talent.

Well, I understand I guess, the celeb name draws box office, but it just sucks though.

When I was 15 I was offered big money contracts, to seal the deal I had to go to the Hamptons with these perverted, old, rich guys for a "weekend get-a-way". I said no, she obviously said yes.

I got paid $500 to play Guitar Hero on a huge projection screen for 2 hours at a corporate conference in Las Vegas once- the CFO had this grand plan to hire a "pro" from a local Gamestop to make the CEO look like a fool in front of the whole company. Somebody tipped the CEO off, so I just got to play against employees, drink their liquor, and eat their fine catered buffet. It was probably the best job I've ever had.

The voice over industry can be quite lucrative if you can get the work.

These days it's being dominated by movie celebrities making it even tougher on those who have been doing it for years. But for moderately small investment you can setup a recording studio in your basement and work out of your home, again, after you've established yourself. That usually takes a couple of years at least. Success comes down to determination and endless self promotion.

When I was 15, I had no money. Then when I turned 16, I took a job at a bowling alley for $5.15 an hour.

I've always wondered how you get into the voice acting thing. I've been told I'd be good at it. I've just assumed that would mean moving to the west coast, taking lessons, and going to hundreds of auditions. Seems like way too much risk and money spent for the opportunity to maybe get a small part in a TV cartoon no one watches..

So for a mere five-digit sum, the production not only gets a few minutes of usable onscreen dialogue from a famous actress -- but more importantly, gets the right to leverage her fame to promote their movie, in perpetuity, throughout the universe. And she likely doesn't get a cut of the cash the movie brings in, either.

Not a bad deal, if you're a blockbuster factory trying to crank out the most profitable films possible.

I never got that much for VO work. Probably because I wasent in the union. SO it was mostly cash or alcohol.

Yeah, because obviously I literally meant 1/10 her salary. Also, what if it's that actor's only job for that month? That's pretty common.

Do people really go to animated pics just because of who does the voices?

I find it distracting, though I spend so much time kicking people off my lawn I don't know many actors these days

weirdneighbour: Do people really go to animated pics just because of who does the voices?

I don't, and sometimes the known actor ruins the animation.

Example Nick Cage as the father in Astro Boy, when the son was killed it really didn't feel like he was grieving or upset in his voice. I'd have rather had an experienced voice actor in that role then him.

Some do, most don't. Most use it as a way to supplement their day jobs or other freelancing. Lani Minella (new window) is one of the most prolific voice actors out there. And yet even she averages less than one job a month (at least according to IMDB).

However much Valve pays Ellen McClain (voice of GlaDOS and the Turrets in Portal 1 and 2, the Administrator in Team Fortress 2, and Combine Overwatch Announcer in Half life 2 and the two Espisodes), it isn't enough.
