One of the great all-time guitar players.

Aw that's a shame. I've been listening to him play with the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band and really enjoying it. RIP Guitar Man. Or maybe Guitar God would be more like it.

Hadn't heard of him before this. Going to Youtube to check him out.

He really was one of the best around. The man just had this really great attittude. No real surprise though. When I watched the last Crossroads Fest, it was pretty apparent he had slowed down quite a bit. Understandably.

RIP Bluesman

How apt that the final song of the 2010 Crossroads was "The Thrill is Gone." That describes the day for me.

RIP Hubert.

One of the last of his generation ...

He used to live in Milwaukee not too long ago. You could get guitar lessons from him...

Well, another name has been added to the lists of greats that will no doubt be "discovered" 20 years after their death. I hate that some of the most influential musicians in our country's history will meet the same fate.

Goodnight Bluesman

Just saw an interview with him on the Metal Evolution documentary. The man could still play and spoke fondly of his time with Howlin' Wolf.

RIP Hubert.

Guess he wanted to join the in crowd.

I just saw him play in October. Elvis Costello had him in as a special guest for a few songs. He had to be helped on and off stage and had an oxygen bottle but his playing was spot on. setlist (new window) RIP bluesman

I had the honor of meeting Hubert Sumlin when he performed for my work's annual Blues Concert. Great man, great talent. He will be missed.

Man, that song went on forever, too. BB just kept talking and repeating himself - I've seen him a few times in the last ten years, he's fading fast.

AverageAmericanGuy: Hadn't heard of him before this. Going to Youtube to check him out.

Check out 10 Days Out, a CD and DVD Kenny Wayne Shepherd put out a few years ago. There's some great interviews with him and some other old timers, some I'd heard of some I hadn't.

Howlin' Wolf once fired him for using a pick, and wouldn't let him back until he agreed to play with his fingers

Thanks! I'll look into it.

Oh, yeah! Proceeds from 10 Days Out go to a fund that helps old musicians who need help with medical bills

He was a true great, and from all accounts, a class act.

Requiescat in pace Hubert.

Like ofacue, I had the chance to see him sit in with another band. Big Head Todd were doing their Big Head Blues Club tour earlier this year and my son and I saw him in Austin at the Paramount. Oxygen tank and all, the dude could still bring it and bring it hard. Nice to see him getting the respect he deserved in his later years.

Yep, and like the idiot I am, I passed on the opportunity- he was only charging $150 for 3 one-hour lessons.

UncleScam: One of the great all-time guitar players.

Absolutely. No one was doing what he did before he did it. He helped create and popularize a version of the blues that both helped create and influence rock and roll. His work with Howlin' Wolf was like a tutorial on how the blues should be played. He left nothing to improve on.

Paging TFer Hubert Sumlin to this thread. I always thought you had the coolest FARK handle around. My condolences to your namesake.

Damn. Another Blues great, gone.

Hang in there B.B. and Buddy!

Saw him play once in Minneapolis many years ago. The sad thing is, today's younger generation will have no idea just how influential he was with the blues, and how it affected the British Invasion later on, the both of which still influences today's music. An end of an era.

There was a table at Nuno's on 6th St in Austin that had a note taped to it that read something like "if Hubert Sumlin or Buddy Miles or Pinetop Perkins comes in, get up."

I was fortunate enough to see him last November at BB King's, with David Johansen on vocals. The man could still bring it on the guitar, even if he had to be helped on and off stage and needed an oxygen tank.

RIP Bluesman.

Damn you death, you could've taken David Evans instead !

Horrible news. He was one of the greats.
