I'd been feeling bad that I didn't recognize the name, then I saw the above Top 40 list. It was at the beginning of a 6-year stretch when I was forcibly removed from popular culture: no radio, no TV. Prison? Worse, grad school.

OTOH, it doesn't look as if I missed much.

For one reason or another, I missed his version of "The In Crowd" for quite a while. First heard the Ramsey Lewis instrumental, then was very familiar with Bryan Ferry's cover of the song (still my favorite version). "Drift Away" on the other hand, I always associated with Dobie Gray. As chestnuts from that era go, you could do a lot worse, I reckon.

Bad week so far... first Hubert Sumlin, now DG.

I remember almost all those songs, liked about 3/4 of them, and you can still hear about 1/2 of them on oldies or classic rock stations. How many songs in today's Top 40 will they be saying that about, 40 years from now?

"The In Crowd" - one of the few songs that was a big hit as both an instrumental and vocal version. Also thinking of "Grazing in the Grass" (Hugh Masekela/Friends of Distinction) and "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" (Cannonball Adderley/Buckinghams). There's probably a handful more.

"Drift Away" came out around the time my dad got a car with FM stereo, and we started listening to Top 40 stations on FM instead of AM. It sounded really great coming out of the speakers behind my head in the back seat.
