EVAR.

Ah, the US Congress, all of the august, sophisticated, deliberative, mature behavior you'd expect from a 5-year-old.

"But they did it first" apparently starts working when you get elected.

It's like they want the President to campaign 24/7 on the Do Nothing Congress.

And how this is new behavior from them?

I don't know, if you sit a middle schooler down and explain to him that ruining the country just so your team can win is a really bad idea, the middle schooler might understand, and straighten their act up.

He has not once called these farkwads out on their obstructionism, he has not once stood up for himself in the face of their idiotic "burn america down if that's what it takes to screw the darky" politics. He has never stood up for ANY of us,

I predict this response: "Sorry I had the audacity to nominate someone, How's about you guys just pick a justice and then we'll all go back to the white house where you can irrumate Michelle until I'm forgiven? Sound good?"

FTFA: President Obama in a statement said that "the only extraordinary things about Halligan were her qualifications and her intellect." Using unusually strong language, the president said Halligan "fell victim to a Republican pattern of obstructionism that puts party ahead of country."

Might want to read the article next time, to avoid looking foolish.

2011-12-07 04:42:47 AM
Also, very next paragraph:

Mr. Obama said that Senate Republicans are currently blocking 20 other "highly qualified judicial nominees," half of whom were nominated to fill vacancies deemed "judicial emergencies" by the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts. He noted that most of these nominees were approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee by a unanimous vote, "only to run into partisan roadblocks on the Senate floor."

Sounds like calling-out-itude to me.

and, in point of historical fact, they DIDN'T do it first, they merely THREATENED to do it and the GOP responded with a threat to simply make the Filibuster go away. and the DEMS had an actual REASON as bush nominated, for lifetime tenure as a federal judge, the man who wrote a legal brief saying the president had the power to order a child tortured in front of his father, if he thought it would help the war on terror.

Help me out here on the political vectors. What if he spends the next ten months gorging them on great bills that would make normal Republicans happy that they can say 'no' to, then when he starts on the 'do nothing' congress deal in the election cycle, they chain-gun through it all super-duper quick and leave it in the senate's lap?

Could that happen? Would that happen?

2012 will boil down to being a vote against the GOP, not a vote for someone.

2011-12-07 07:14:12 AM
It's sickening how childish our government has become. That said, it's interesting to note that things have been improving in this country steadily, if slowly, since the government became completely deadlocked. Maybe Congress not being able to do a damned thing is really the way to go.

Um, Congress is both the House and the Senate, so passing it um to the Senate and leaving it there just means that the attack vector changes from House Republicans to Senate Republicans. That's assuming that the House could actually pull off stalling and then passing those bills (challenging without flip-floping so hard that it makes Mitt Romney look consistant), and that the independant (R and D voting bases aren't going to change no matter what at this point) voting public doesn't see through the scheme.
Could it happen, sure. Will it happen, highly unlikely.

eddyatwork: Why is anyone surprised by this? The republicans have made it clear that they are not going to cooperate with Obama for almost four years now.

Pretty much... The GOP has amply demonstrated they are more concerned with getting Obama out of office than any of the myriad of problems we face as a country. They've demonstrated time and again that the needs of the wealthiest Americans should be catered to at the expense of the poor and middle classes. They've proven their contempt for women, homosexuals, minorities, immigrants, and non-christians over and over.

The entire party is rife with petty, selfish, mean-spirited sociopaths.

The Repukes and teapartiers will find themselves vomited up by the voters. We are organized now in Occupy which won't go away. Besides if you know Vedic astrology Obama is unbeatable in 2012. He'll sweep the Democrats in with him and appoint whomsoever he likes.

Finally people are starting to talk some sense.

Payback, shmayback... yes it was totally wrong when we blocked the Bush nominees, and now it's totally wrong for them to block our gal.

This cycle of paybacks has to end. It would be wonderful if both sides agreed that no matter who gets elected in 2012, that this shiat was stopped.

jayg22: Obama should just name himself king. He could fix the economy in like 3 seconds if it wasnt for CONGRESS!

Doubtful.

We would, however, be making a HELL of a lot more progress without one party intentionally hamstringing any sort of recovery because the president is a black Democrat.

Remember, the Republicans have stated that their number one priority is to make Obama a one-term President. And if the economy is still recovering in November, 2012, he will be re-elected, almost without a doubt. Therefore, the Republican party's stated, primary goal is to trash the United States economy for political gain..

But keep pretending that noticing Republican obstructionism means people think Obama is the Messiah or some such bullshiat. See how that works out for ya.

As of December 2010, President Barack Obama has nominated one hundred five individuals for federal judgeships. The overwhelming majority of them have been filibustered.

During President George W. Bush's two term tenure in office, he nominated thirty-nine people for twenty-seven different federal appellate judgeships that were blocked by the Senate Democrats either directly in the Senate Judiciary Committee or on the full Senate floor using a filibuster.

A lot of people here assume that the Republican party will be punished for this behaviour by voters.

My feeling is that this is rooted in the misconception that the voting block being targeted (the 'independent undecideds') will bother to learn the reason why judicial appointments are unfilled, or that they can be shaken from their feeling - caused maybe by movies and other non-rigorous sources - that the President can simply do whatever he wants, so what's the problem?

These are the people during elections who, when asked by breathless 'reporters' what they thought of a debate say idiotic things like 'I really wanted more specifics' despite the literal 1,000s of pages of detailed policy available freely from all major candidates these days. Alternatively, if they get a wonkish speech, they say that it was 'boring...people want a leader to inspire them.'

Perhaps worse are the total morons who whine that President Obama hasn't done 100% of everything they thought he would, so now they're gonna stay home, cause they've 'had it with him.' Forgive me, but tha seems like probably the dumbest 'strategy' ever. But they'll do it...why? Because they, again, believe that he can just do whatever, so what's the hold up? Forget Congress they say, just do it!

You assume that these people will punish Parliamentary intransigence, when just this week a poll was released giving a very low (single digit?) approval rating for 'Congress,' but an average 46% approval for 'my Congressman.'

They will not be punished for this, the are likely as anything to be rewarded.

Let me go one step further, how about treasonous scum that should all be rounded up and detained...indefinitely, preferably on any island we will do one more nuclear test on. At this point it is almost insanity to think that the Republican party should be in power at any level. They screech about class warfare all the time, while doing nothing but class warfare. I say it's bout time we fire back. I seriously can not understand anymore how anyone would willingly say out loud they are for these morons, aside from them being too farking stupid to understand what this party is all about.
