calling for policies that favor the general population at the expense of the elite is populist. that's not necessarily a bad thing.

2011-12-06 04:28:47 PM
How do you get the middle class to hate the middle class?

2011-12-06 04:44:24 PM
Ah. So GaryPDX's taxes are going to go up, according to the GOP. Cool.

I like how he called for a "new Nationalism" where there's plenty of social justice to go around. People pay their "fair share" and get a "fair shot" according to their abilities. It sounds really cool, like a New Socialist Nationalism. This is something new.

Does that mean that corporate tax cuts are ALSO socialism?

hubiestubert: Does that mean that corporate tax cuts are ALSO socialism?

It's only socialism if it benefits actual humans.

Corporations aren't people for this particular exercise.

hubiestubert: Does that mean that corporate tax cuts are ALSO socialism?

According to the GOP, yes - tax cuts for corporations ARE socialism.

I don't exactly credit the GOP with a lot of intelligence lately.

Corporate tax cuts are necessary for freedom. Because freedom. Corporate tax cuts are good and socialism is bad, therefore corporate tax cuts are not socialism.

You of all people should have figured this out.

Our country-this great Republic-means nothing unless it means the triumph of a real democracy, the triumph of popular government, and, in the long run, of an economic system under which each man shall be guaranteed the opportunity to show the best that there is in him. That is why the history of America is now the central feature of the history of the world; for the world has set its face hopefully toward our democracy; and, O my fellow citizens, each one of you carries on your shoulders not only the burden of doing well for the sake of your country, but the burden of doing well and of seeing that this nation does well for the sake of mankind.

SOCIALISM!

If Lincoln or Theodore Roosevelt was alive today he would call the Republican a group of fuktards!

Well, if you're a Democrat, and you use the word 'nation' and 'social' within a speech, it means you tend towards the German tenets of National Socialism.

He is saying "opportunity for all" is socialism. Opportunity should only exist for the rich and children of the rich. He is just forgetting to sugar coat what he actually believes.

Yes they do (without even realizing it).

And no it's not funny to watch. Those "idiots" have way too much power. They need to be put in straight jackets and bike helmets so they're not a danger to themselves and others.

But Republicans said it was another attempt to distract from what they see as Obama's failed economic record. Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell accused the president and his fellow Democrats of resorting to "cheap political theater."

I like how instead of refuting anything he said, he goes "B-b-b-but SPENDING!!!"

Yes and calling for crushing taxes on the middle class and poor can be starkly populist, subby. It all really hinges upon the arguement presented. If it is one that is sturring of the emotions and sets us vs them then yes it is populism.

So everyone here is in favor of making the Bush tax cuts permanent? I am in the middle class, and when the Bush tax cuts expire, my taxes will go up.

As it is, the student loan interest and the child care deductibles reductions are going to hurt next year.

So now tax cuts are "giving people money" and a handout? Funny the Republicans didn't say that when they added 2 Trillion in tax cuts that mostly went to the rich.

2011-12-06 06:04:14 PM
So people involuntarily giving money to be spent at the discretion of the state for the betterment of the whole is not socialist, but less taking of money from them is socialist? Do these people live in backwards world?

Nothing shocking here. The only ones being critical about this are the people already bought and paid for. Who gives a fark about what those assholes think? They signed that away when they got paid off.

thomps: calling for policies that favor the general population at the expense of the elite is populist. that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Nor would being socialist, were they actually socialist. Which of course they aren't, as this has nothing to do with means of production or communal property whatsoever.

Also, we're running a rather substantial deficit, so taxes need to go up. Whether that's done by actually raising the rates and otherwise keeping things the same or closing exceptions/deductions/other loopholes is the only part that's actually arguable, and even that's not really necessarily an important distinction from a practical perspective. None of this is really left wing, right wing, liberal, conservative, socialist, or communist, it's being able to do basic arithmetic.

2011-12-06 06:20:16 PM
Well, when you have a middle class so fond of sucking the corporate ass, things like that actually are "starkly populist."

The real elephant in the room: the military budget. Yes, we need to cut it.

Yes, they'll "piss it away" on all those social programs we don't need, and funding that wacky alphabet soup of government agencies. Good call.

Raising taxes on one group of people levels the playing field for everyone else......it mystically makes them go to school and apply themselves....or something.

Theres plenty of trailers and section 8 housing that would be sitting vacant if wealthy people paid more taxes.
