What's scary? The fact that the cops were stupid enough to try and tackle an armed gunman instead of shooting him?

I would have gone with the Dumbass tag for the dumbass who didn't drop the gun when the cops told him to. Yeah genius, I'm sure they'll just take your word for it that it's a fake gun and go home.

I think the real felony here is that the guy had removed the orange tip on the front of the gun..

Yeah, a big ol' THIS. It's a lot safer to comply and then sort things out later.

Unfortunately, Yoshida said, the cameras were no longer rolling when the real guns arrived.

Never stop rolling.

"Maybe the film crew could have notified the (police) station, even though they didn't have to," Esparza said.

Don't actual professional movie & TV productions coordinate these things with the local authorities to prevent just this very thing from happening? That and do things like secure the area and have security people and production staff around that could have quickly verified this with the police?

Was this some tiny student film or amateur production or something?

Police spokesman Officer Albie Esparza agreed that the company had no legal obligation to inform the police because the filming took place on private property.

Silly people. The police keep forgeting that a mall or stores parking lot """IS"""" private property.

/Many Lawyers and Civil Liberties Groups continue to remind the police about that, every damn time..
//Why yes it is true that you can charge/sue the police for trespassing, as they drive through your parking lot videoing the license plates for their crime files.( automated license plate recognition software )

"They said when they see someone running around with a gun, they usually just shoot," she said. "They don't ask any questions."

Really? No "Drop the weapon NOW!" or anything?! I can see if it's aimed at them, but in general that doesn't seem like the best policy.

The cops are goddamn idiots for tackling what they thought to be an armed gunman. That dude doesn't realize how lucky he is to not be dead.

I don't care who you are, or what you are doing.

If the officer says drop the gun then you DROP the gun.

You can always explain later that you are making a movie. Drop the stupid gun.

Somaticasual: I think the real felony here is that the guy had removed the orange tip on the front of the gun..

But they weren't being threatened at all, and with the cameras around and everything to back up his claim the police damn well knew it wasn't a real gun. My guess is they didn't feel like these people filming a movie were giving them the proper respect, so they went full retard.

Modern police should be embarrassed at how often they play dumb just so they can overreact. Once upon a time police were known for their powers of observation and instincts.

This info and more are right in the article. Are the police just so single minded that in any contact with the public they just act like mindless robots set to "Subdue"? The police seem like they have a big old "Us vs Them" mentality. Did I miss the Fark Thread about the NYC cops that had a Facebook page about the annual West Indian Parade? The stuff the cops said on that page was pretty bad.

Didn't you know? Lawfully carrying a gun (even a toy gun) in California is an automatic death penalty administered by the police. Why bother with things like trials, due process, lawyers, civil rights, and all of that silliness when it's easier to just murder the obviously-guilty perpetrator?

Yes and no. The crew had all the proper permits but because the filming was on private property, they didn't have to inform the local police about it. So, they didn't.

Idiots. Especially given the fact they were filming a crime scene. It never occurred to them that some nosy neighbor might be snooping on them and mistake their act for the real thing? Never?

guy: Oh, we're just filming a movie.
police: Oh, that's a relief. I thought this was a bank robbery in progress. It looks very realistic.
guy: Uh, yeah. A movie about a bank robbery. That's right.
*awkward pause*
guy: Hey. Uh, could you hand me that dufflebag there? I need to get back to my trailer.
Police: Oh, sure. Can I get tickets to the premier?

Get Lost: Silly people. The police keep forgeting that a mall or stores parking lot """IS"""" private property.

Yes, because most convenience store owners would rather get robbed at gunpoint than have the police trespass in their store. I don't love cops, but I don't hate everything they do ever. All of this seems reasonable: Person calls 911 because they see a man pointing a gun at a store clerk, police officers come running, draw down on apparent gunman and order him to drop his gun. Where it gets screwy is when the guy has a couple of real guns pointed at him he seems to think the right answer is "Hey man, this isn't real."

And you don't have the absolute right to keep police from trespassing. A felony in progress is one of the most glaring examples of when a cop can enter property without a warrant.

And the police can enter private property if they see a gunman running about.

Much like looking both ways before crossing the street, despite pedestrian right of way, it behooves you to let the police know you'll be running around in a public area with fake guns. Because you look really silly when you lose that shootout.

2011-12-06 05:24:43 PM
Dude: If you're filming a movie and a cop calls you on it, explain slowly that you are filming, and PUT THE GUN DOWN, SLOWLY. You and the nice officer can laugh about it later after he talks to the cameraman. For Gods sake, don't make the officer feel threatened.

If they actually believed it was a real gun, he would be dead. They wouldn't have taken any chances when he refused to drop it. They knew better, yet still overreacted.

Maybe i just have too much respect for police? I should perhaps start believing they're some kind of sub-race of humans, incapable of even the levels of intelligence and observation i attribute to the average person. Then excuses like that would be believable.

Common sense tells me that when you're going to reenact an armed robbery you would inform the local police department whether you're required to or not.

I had some friends who were shooting a student film inside a business at a mini-mall. It was late at night and they had lots of lights (obviously), so anyone could see inside the storefront. Their movie was pretty violent, and they had some people tied to chairs while being threatened and beaten by arm goons. Out of nowhere the cops showed up with guns drawn, and started cuffing people. My friends finally convinced the cops that everything was legit, and no one was arrested. In the end nothing happened, and the cops asked them to either cover the windows or contact them beforehand. They spent two more nights shooting with no problems. Pretty scary situation though.

Maybe it's because cops being racist, especially where they think people can't see them, isn't news. Not all cops are racists, but many are.

Mmmmmmm, Fark cop hate thread.

"All cops should be executed, blah blah blah, there's never a recorded instance in history of police doing something reasonable blah blah blah."

Douche nozzles of the thread:
The movie crew did nothing wrong, legally. But it's common sense to warn the police about things like this. Just because it's private property doesn't mean it's *secure* and non-visible property. If it's something that the public has access to that means there's always a possibility that someone could misinterpret what's going on and call 911 (or prank call them, for that matter).

No no no. You're missing:
Cops shoot someone with a real gun, they're the bad guys.
Cops don't shoot someone with a real gun, they're the bad guys.

Remember, in a Fark Cop thread, there's only two possible positions. Police are wrong in every circumstance no matter what, or you're a fascist.

J. Frank Parnell: They wouldn't have taken any chances when he refused to drop it.

When you discharge a firearm into somebody you believe is wielding a loaded firearm, YOU ARE TAKING A CHANCE.

Unlike in the movies, bad guys don't die instantaneously when hit anywhere by a single bullet. Most of the time, they will remain alive and angry enough to fire back in retaliation. And there's a chance that bullets fired by someone on either side could miss, ricochet, or pass through their intended target and harm innocent bystanders.

It's safer to disarm an imminent threat by immobilizing them, e.g. tackling them and holding them down.
